I thought oooaf….what a comment to make as t.u. was running out of the tunnel and taking the field.

This morning I am watching a Pat McAfee interview where he is discussing the last of transparency and big money available to players and combining that with unlimited portal jumps and no rules or structure to manage it.

There will be high expectations, based on these year to year contacts with some players……many players will chase money because each player is a free agent at the end of each seasons.

The state of current affairs can't continue. It needs to change or traditional college foortball will die and lose all or it regional identity.

It should be structured like baseball at this point. The money should flow down from the athletic departments. There should be a salary cap of some kind. You can go over that cap, but then you have to pay some kind of luxury tax. Allow coaches and recruiters to negotiate multi-year deals or deals with team / player options if you want. That way there is an actual structure compared to whatever is going on now.

That's where this has gone off the rails. For 99.9% of these kids, there is zero value to their NIL rights. Zero. Nobody's selling more mattresses because Chase Lane did a radio spot for whoever. Boosters are just paying them to play under the NIL sham. That absolutely could be regulated by the NCAA, but it's too dumb, bureaucratic, and reactive to do so.

I'm happy to say I've emotionally tapped out. I used to watch the sips with seething hatred. Last night, I didn't even care. The question is will enough people emotionally tap out like me such that it affects the revenue stream. I doubt it, but that's the only way it will change back to the way it was.

We have two teams with rent-a-QBs in the championship game. College teams are building one year teams every year. They will keep and pay the pieces they think will be in their 2 deep, pay the freshmen that show promise, flush the rest, and fill in the lacking spots with transfers. Wash, rinse repeat every year.

I 100% agree. The NIL payments have little to do with Name, Image, and Likeness. It is almost all pay for play. NIL just makes it extraordinarily hard to enforce rules against pay for play because everyone (booster, university, and player) just lie and make a ridiculous claim that the money is related to name, image, and likeness.

I tapped out of the NFL and all professional sports in 2020 when they all embraced BLM and other woke policies. A lot of others did as well, but unfortunately most came back over time. I would have loved to see them all drop dramatically in popularity unless they apologized for their actions (which they never will). I would love to see college football implode so that it actually gave incentive to change things. The current transfer portal rules and "NIL" pay-for-play really degrades college football. It is becoming much too close to a 2nd tier Pro league.

Yes, we were the first big cheater. Unfortunately, it is working for other schools even if it didn't work for us. Schools probably learned from our mistake. They learned that you have to buy your team to compete, but you can't just buy any top ranked player. Character and how they fit together matter when purchasing your team.

But playing college football is not a constitutional right. It's very simple actually.

Sure you can. If any kid at any age above 16 gets compensated in any form of dollars he is considered a professional player and adheres to contracts and all that that entails. Just like in the real business world those contracts have required performance parameters. If a guy is hired by a company and he gets X $$$$$ for selling 100 widgets he has done his job. If he only sells 25 widgets he is fired. Same needs to happen on the football field.

You can make it a violation to pay a player to play for a team (and I think that IS currently against the rules). You cannot prevent a player from making money off of their name, image, and likeness (like advertising) based on the court decisions. So it can be regulated. It would just be difficult because NIL makes it much easier to lie and claim "NIL" in obvious cases of pay for play.

"Difficult" meaning next to impossible?

Go look at the court cases. Several judges in California, and conservative judges in Tennessee. It doesn't matter the judge or the court really.

All of these cases are going against the NCAA

Missed my point I see.

Regardless, to the extent that's true, why? Because the NCAA wasn't proactive enough 10 years ago to see what was coming and adapt. Sure, once they let the cat out of the bag all the legislatures might have started taking steps to make sure their state schools had advantages to other states' schools, or at least stay "equal" to them. None of that would have happened had the NCAA been paying attention 7-10 years ago.

I still can't understand why anyone gives a damn about players getting paid. That's the way it is now and so be it. This years playoffs were the first time the final four teams were actually evenly matched and the games were fantastic!!! Like it or not, NIL has created more parity amongst the top programs. Sad truth is, we are one of the few with all the resources at our disposal that have absolutely pissed it away so far.

Coaches contract's would have to have same wording, both are now contract workers for the University or should be.

Maybe because the fans are the ones being asked to foot the bill

But it's really not the payment that's the biggest issue: it's the free transfer as well

Fans are asked to pay players a d then a year later they leave for somewhere else

The free transfer has crippled a coach's ability to develop players because you can no longer keep them in the system

If they aren't playing as much as they want, they leave

At least in the nfl players are contracted for a few years and you can build some continuity

The other side of the coin is a key player holding his team "hostage" for more $$$ to play in important games such as the playoffs, like a rumor I saw about Evan Stewart (I have no idea if Evan did anything)...

I don't give a damn about players getting paid. They've been getting paid for decades. The damn portal rules are what's killing interest in this game. I don't know how old some of you kids are. I'm 58. My formative years sports wise were in the 70s. And I don't mind telling you I started out as a sip fan, before I grew up and wised up.

What made college football so special back then was being able to identify with the team that played for your school. You had an emotional bond with those guys. I loved Earl Campbell and Johnny Lam Jones and Raymond Clayborn bc that was "my team". I wasn't an Aggie fan back then but I damn sure knew who Bubba Bean and George Woodard and Curtis Dickey and Ed Simonini and Garth Ten Naple were. They were " The Aggies". Now, with these jackasses jumping around to six teams in 7 years, you barely even know the roster from one year to the next. No continuity. No bond. Just wh*res jumping from one payday to the next

That's what's ruining the game. Not the pay itself.

What could ncaa have done 7-10 years ago that wouid have changed that not allowing transfer and NIL would end up being a violation of state law and federal antitrust laws?

In 2019, CA passed the first NIL law set to go into effect in 2023. House v NCAA is field in 2020.

In 2021, FL then passed an NIL law going into effect July 2021. CA, TX etc ext all jumped on board.

Supreme Court then decided Alston in 2021. Though not about NIL, the writing was on the wall.

In 2023, 10 states and feds sue NCAA over transfer rules.

So what possibly could NCAA done before 2019 to regulate this that would have stopped all this from happening?

They were regulating it. States didn't like it so they passed laws and sued. And ncaa got their teeth kicked in.
