No doubt about that IMO either.

Yet there are some people that really don't like players getting money. It's very strange.

We had the best recruiting class of all time and that bought us 8-4. Glass houses

Yes, we were the first big cheater. Unfortunately, it is working for other schools even if it didn't work for us. Schools probably learned from our mistake. They learned that you have to buy your team to compete, but you can't just buy any top ranked player. Character and how they fit together matter when purchasing your team.

You really think we were the FIRST??
That's so cute
Yes, I think we were the first big NIL cheater when we bought our 2022 recruiting class. Was there pay-for-play before that? Absolutely. However, not near to the extent of what happens with NIL. We were the pioneer in using NIL pay-for-play to buy a recruit class. We got organized and took advantage of it first.

If it makes anyone feel better (probably shouldn't), Congress is about to get involved finally so something is going to change:

Quote:

The new Republican leader of the influential Senate Commerce Committee told ESPN that one of his "major priorities" this session is to pass a law to help the NCAA regulate the booming market for college athletes without running afoul of federal antitrust restrictions. A bipartisan group of senators is drafting a measure to help prevent a split among NCAA schools.

Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, said he's not interested in saving the NCAA. Instead, he said he wants to give college sports the legal runway they need to save themselves. "College sports is in crisis right now," Cruz said. "If Congress doesn't act, we risk seeing devastation."

The new Senate majority leader, John Thune, R-South Dakota, previously has introduced legislation addressing how college athletes are paid, and now he is positioned to move a bill forward.

We have two teams with rent-a-QBs in the championship game. College teams are building one year teams every year. They will keep and pay the pieces they think will be in their 2 deep, pay the freshmen that show promise, flush the rest, and fill in the lacking spots with transfers. Wash, rinse repeat every year.
to compete for the title each year...going the junior/senior rent-a-QB route is probably the best way to go

don't spend 1 or 2 years developing a freshman QB

Most D1 college football players don't play for their team, or coach, or school, or an education. They play for themselves and the $$$.

And those that don't make it to the NFL are broke by the age of 25. Those that make it to the NFL are broke by age 35. Such is life

But coach doesnt have to sit in momma's living room any more and promise he will see to it that he is gonna get a degree! She gets hers right off the bat!

I think you can do it for one that shows a lot of promise in the freshman year. I think college programs are going to use the freshman year as a tryout. If you don't show promise - they are going to cut you loose and bring in the next round. There is money involved now, and there will be no loyalty either way.

I still can't understand why anyone gives a damn about players getting paid

Maybe because the fans are the ones being asked to foot the bill

But it's really not the payment that's the biggest issue: it's the free transfer as well

Fans are asked to pay players a d then a year later they leave for somewhere else

The free transfer has crippled a coach's ability to develop players because you can no longer keep them in the system

If they aren't playing as much as they want, they leave

At least in the nfl players are contracted for a few years and you can build some continuity

Hit the nail on the head. I don't think most have problems with the kids getting their cut

But the NIL in its current state combined with the transfer portal is the problem. If we went back to the transfer rules from 10 years ago a lot of issues would be solved. Make an exception for if your head coach leaves or is fired.

Yep

Free transfer without having to fit out opened up a huge can of worms

Nil by itself would have just become legal pay for play which would have just replaced the old bag and trans am method

that just isn't going to happen.

ten states and eventually the federal government sued the ncaa over the transfer rules. they got a TRO, then NCAA eventually settled because they knew they could not win.

99 times out of a 100, its a bad idea when congress gets involved with anything.

but in the case of college football, there may not be any other option.

its either keep as its going, which schools and fans don't want, or have congress step in to give antitrust protection.

if it stopped at that, it would be fine. but you know congress will want a much larger say.

So typical A&M to be one of the few teams to be able to exploit NIL and we've been average every year

the free transfer rule does prevent hold-outs I suppose

that's what would happen for a player that wants a raise...if he couldn't transfer
