The insane extension is the killer. Now we are loaded with so much debt that it seems we will be a 2nd tier program for the foreseeable future.

Hate to say it but I have been loyal for almost 50 years and this feels like a low point.

Where are you seeing the spending drying up? Maybe it prevents donors from going crazy on NIL, but we're still in the upper echelon of spenders. And honestly, without confidence that the HC is THE guy, NIL spending will likely stay a little hesitant. If Elko can prove he's got what it takes and just needs a few key pieces, there are plenty of dollars that can be spent.

They're easy to blame and are ultimately responsible as the decision lies with them, but that was an overwhelmingly popular decision on here at the time.

It's my understanding that "those" who hired and extended his agreement, were not the same as "those" who fired him. There in lies the problem with A&M athletics.

You sure about that one? I know one Ag who was very involved with everything and has done very well in O&G paid the majority of his buy out. So yeah, sucks for him but he at least stepped up helping take care of something he was part of making happen.

Maybe Elko will rebuild the program with a better overall culture and better recruiting talent evaluations. Debt isn't what is holding our program back.

You don't extend anyone with 7 years on a deal. Also 2020 was a mirage. We beat Vandy, 2 teams with new coaches in Arkansas and Miss State, 3 teams who fired their coaches in South Carolina, Tennessee and Auburn, LSU who had opt outs and started true freshmen QB and the only team we beat with a pulse that year was Florida at home. North Carolina was missing their 3 best offensive weapons and best defensive players. Instead of just looking at wins we have to start looking at the end of the year of who we actually beat and how we won.

We just recruited the 7th ranked class. We have the 6th ranked portal class. We are currently 2nd in the early going in 2026 with 3 five stars visiting us and national guys talking about us possibly landing the #1 class(and yes, despite the 2022 class, we should all want that). We are firmly in the top 10 and maybe top 5-7 in NIL despite the finances of Jimbo's contract. We are entering year 2 of a new staff that, and while we closed the season out poorly, they still took a program that was 12-13 the previous two years and had us one game away from the sec championship with about 14 transfers from Troy, Central Florida, San Diego State, Louisiana Tech, etc. on the field. A winning record in the sec for only the 4th time in 13 seasons (5-3)

Look, Elko may fall flat on his face and go 7-5 each of the next 2 years and be fired. More coaches than not are fired within 5 years than win a championship, and it's not a bad bet to say he will be. But do some of you not remember the fran years? the Sherman years?

This isn't even close to a program low point. There's plenty of reason for concern, and there's plenty of reason for optimism. We are in a very unknown territory right now with plenty of good and plenty of bad mixed in.

It was a reasonable extension after being declared a single game out of the 2020 season four-team playoff. Remember we played only SEC teams and there was no way to calculate meaningful inter-conference strength of schedule. Pure eye test.

No, it was super easy to see what teams we actually beat and how we beat them in 2020 if you just really evaluated after the season. Also, again you don't extend with that much time left on a contract. That is simple. I think Indiana and Arizona State could be kicking themselves with their extensions.

How are we broke? Probably being more cautious this time around but deep pockets at A&M is still a thing I would assume.

People said it then. Not a lot of people, but some people. Some people even wanted him gone during the 2020 season.

Been an Aggie fan for 50+ years. It's time to let the Jimbo thing go. His buyout and previous coaching here has absolutely no impact on what is going on with the current team and regime. Just let it go.

I have heard something similar, that the money to buy him out was rounded in hours if not minutes. I think the admin is using Jimbo's buyout as cover for their money mismanagement in the past few years (along with Bjork's poor spending). It wasn't Jimbo's idea to over spend on an indoor facility by $100 million or rebuild the weight room for the 3rd time in 14 years but blame him anyway. Seems like there are some kickbacks in there somewhere but we will never know.

What's your point

Going after Jimbo was understandable.

Extending even understandable bc LSU was trying to hire him.

What was stupid was the fully guaranteed contract.

But that's not what this thread is discussing.

It was started by an Ag assuming paying Jimbo off is going to hurt us.

And I point out one Ag took care of most of it.

And then you.

Well

You do you

Again

If I were him. Darn right I would be careful in the future. But it's his money and he can do what he likes with it. Maybe he Jumps back in. Maybe he does not.

Some of you on here.

If you look at my previous post, you will see why I stated that the 2020 was a mirage especially when you look at the teams we beat and how we beat them. Also, i understand extending some coaches with less then 4 years on the contract for recruiting purposes but not with 7 left. We get so paranoid that others will steal our coaches that we just do ignorant stuff in regards to contracts. We have deep pockets and resources, if a coach leaves you will have an opportunity to replace them. Look we lost the best baseball coach in our history to our rival yet replaced him with what appears to be a good choice considering he has the preseason number 1 team in the nation. Now time will tell if we made a bad hire but at least we aren't saddled with a bad contract.

From the same lenses, Elko is also an extension, and I thought we should have started completely fresh.

The rumors are/were the money had to be fronted and put in escrow in order to fire him. That way it wasn't "we will pay it later somehow but fire him now." If true there is still no point in paying him all at once, just pay him as the contract states.

I have a hard time criticizing the BMAs. They foot the bill to bring the coaches in, and foot the bill when the coaches need to go. Plus, a lot of the same ones are funding the NIL. I wish we had better results, but We have some guys that throw some serious money at the program. And I appreciate it. While some would prefer they give the money and stay out how it's spent, we all know that's not how it works. Very few people will give a ton of money towards a cause and not want a say in how their money is spent.
