Hard to dispute this. Although I think the defensive tanking had a lot more to do with it. Elko? You listening?
As soon as he got hit and reacted, I told my family our season was over. I agree that he made up for a lot of our flaws, including bad OC calls or OL blocking. But that's a hell of a leap to CFP.

However, having a better ground game could potentially help keep them off the field. Getting another bruising first down or 2 in a game could have made the difference here or there. Against Auburn, we averaged 3.2 yards per carry and our RB dropped the game tying 2 point conversion. I have no doubts in a game like Auburn or USC, Moss could have potentially helped.
I'd say we most likely finish 9-4 with an outside chance at 10-3 if Moss stays healthy.
Not to mention the mental toll of losing our best overall player for a team that had gotten to where they were because of their run game.

Owens is not hurt again. From what I gathered (not 100% sure, but most likely), he had his final minor surgery removing screws that was expected months ago.

If we have the ability to gain 2 yards when we need it, the tu game becomes a nail biter (at worst). Auburn is a win with Moss and I'm not sure how anyone can be convinced otherwise.
So at a minimum we have a 9-3 record with a close loss to tu, but a case could be made we go 10-2. USCe is a harder one to flip, IMO, because we pulled in front after his injury and then just melted down.

The South Carolina game was tied at the half. Here is a summary of our drives to start the second half:
- 6 plays, 19 yards, 3:26 long
- 4 plays, 9 yards, 1:39 long (turn over on downs)
- 3 plays, 9 yards, 1:12 long
- 6 plays, 59 yards, 2:29 long (ended in an INT)
- 3 plays, 4 yards, 0:57 long
- 8 plays, 40 yards, 3:32 long
- 1 play, -12 yards, 0:09 long (ended in a fumble)
- 5 plays, 15 yards, 2:22 (ended the game)
0 points in the second half. Three turnovers and four drives that lasted less than four plays.
In the Auburn game, we dug ourselves into a hole early with a missed FG, an interception. While we climbed out of that hole eventually, we still had a three-and-out that led to a touchdown the following drive. We got an INT that positioned us on Auburn's 11-yardline and picked up 0 yards and kicked a FG. Had a four-play drive for four yards that resulted in a turnover on downs. Then on our last possession with 2:53 left and a three-point lead and a shot to kill the clock, we went three-and-out, and killed exactly 22 seconds of clock.
In the USC game, we had four three-and-outs, two interceptions, and a missed field goal.
If we had a healthy Moss or Owens, the offense definitely flows more effectively and any off these games could have turned out differently.

That and it cratered vs USC and lost a 17 point late 3rd/4th quarter lead.
Unless there is a defensive overhaul and scheme change, we will not finish better than 6-6 next year.

Like I lined out above, it disappeared in the second half against South Carolina.
Against USC, we had two three-and-outs in a row, the defense followed the second one with an INT that the offense capitalized on by missing a 39-yard field goal after we chose to run the ball on third and five.

Well that and the fact our defense was terrible.
There are lots of ifs. If moss. If officiating. If penalties. If the defense didn't get run over game after game. If Reed threw receivers open.

Might have had more momentum going into usc
We just need a 250+ pound dude who can fall forward for two yards after gaining one yard when tackled.
Says a lot about our roster if one RB can make us lose 5 games.

Only if he also plays defense.
If Moss is healthy down the stretch there is a good chance that a few of those 4th of 1's that were such a bugaboo for us go the other way and one or two games flip. I don't think there's much to be gleaned from that since there are plenty of other things that need to be fixed, but OP's statement in a vacuum is certainly plausible.
I miss Jorvorski Lane so much. Short yardage you always knew he was good for a first down. And dude had the most nimble feet and soft hands for a guy that big.cupcakesprinkles said:
