Why is CFB associated with schools?

With NIL and ability to transfer, why is CFB even associated with schools? Is education still a part of the current environment? I see that a number of players are still getting degrees, but is that something that will phase out?

I dunno how this will ultimately shake out but I follow my college team because it is affiliated with my alma mater. The day I feel completely that the players are just minor league pro players that do not care at all about the colors they wear is the day I find something else to enjoy. I think it would be wise if the schools and players realize there are many fans like me.

Because it would lose a lot of appeal if it were to be called minor league football, even though that's what it is now.

I'm almost there. I've already basically stopped watching CFB other than A&M and the occasional big game

This^^^^^

Didn't watch the tu game. I'm beginning to revert to Fran era viewing habits. Can't stomach tu or even being in the same conference with them.

Because it wouldn't be attached to name brands anymore. Do you think people would be enthusiastic to support a watered down NFL team that isn't even attached to their school anymore?

No one would watch if it wasn't attached to the schools, just like every other pro football league that isn't the NFL. Plus, the NIL money goes away without the school association.

Those college stadiums and facilities require some revenue to pay off the debt . The tv contracts are also with college football conferences.

Same. I don't enjoy the game anymore. I live A&M so I can't quit it.

I'm already there and decided if I'm watching pro football, I'll just watch the Cowboys.

I could see the football teams licensing the University names and paying fees to lease the athletic facilities. Players no longer required to have an academic component. 2 large conferences, formed from the SEC & BIG.

Yep

We follow so ardently because we went to our school, it's ours a d the teams is ours and was always made up of "students"

If they took the college name off the jersey and called the teams college station Aggies or Columbus buckeyes , Tuscaloosa crimson tide etc..,the fanbases would stop watching and caring because the teams would no longer be representing their schools

College Station Aggies

And this is why players saying they are getting ripped off is stupid. If not for the NCAA or the university, nobody would give a f about watching you play. The school doesn't owe you *****

This is the one pushback to NIL that I agree with. There is a reason the NFL has never created a minor league system. Not only does it not make money, but it would lose massive amounts of it. The only reason CFB works as a defacto minor league is because the massive amounts of hyper focused support of the programs. It's the only minor league in any sport that creates a profit. And it creates a MASSIVE profit.

The second the Texas A&M Aggies becomes the B/CS Aggies, I'll never watch another second, and I would suspect that goes for 90% of Aga out there. I've already cut way back on how much I watch, but I wouldn't wven check the score the second they becomes disaffiliated.

…and no, I'm not a teasip nor would ever support them. I'm a 3rd generation Ag with 2 of my 3 kids at A&M. My other is in school in Austin, but we have disowned him (not really, but do give him a lot of grief).

I'm addicted to Aggie football and really wish we could go back in time before NIL.

This.

CFB would be the G-League or AA/AAA football league without the universities. Your team would be the Texan's or Cowboy's farm team.

I have gone to a couple of smaller school games and have been pleasantly surprised. No Kyle Field but decent football without all the b.s. when more start looking around for other teams the money guys will have to pay attention.

Now that they are just in it for money, wonder when students find other things to do, because these folks are really not your classmates (I know, I know, most have been taking on line for years and having class at Bright)
Also, shouldn't these guys be charged for use of University facilities?
Why should students pay a surcharge or athletic fee to raise money for athletes?

Kinda like I avoided 6 man, until I went and saw those guys going strong and hitting each other on the run! Fun to watch!

It shouldn't be. I strongly advocate for a separation of football from the colleges and universities, at least in terms of control.

Having said that, the historical ties can't be dismissed, so I propose creating a national association of nonprofit minor league clubs that will license nicknames, logos and the like. In addition, since the football facilities already exist, these football clubs will lease them from the universities.

The devil is in the details, of course, but the point is there is a way forward in a post-college football era.

This is exactly correct and why I think it's so ignorant that these players continue to bite the hand that feeds them. Even more comical are those who actively support the current system with claims of Indentured servanthood and other nonsense. It's beyond short-sided.

To OP. It's CFB because it's COLLEGE FootBall. Hence the association with schools. It's as simple as that. Otherwise it's not College Football, it's ____________ football.

We may end up in a team "sponsored by" the school to lend their NIL to the org but the players don't need to go to class. Schools wouldn't want to give it up but might create a recruiting advantage

There needs to be a separate minor league farm system for the NFL instead of using colleges to do it. All the very best players who want to get paid big bucks and have an inside track to the NFL can go there.

The kids left will be more likely to stick it out with your school for 3-4 years

Radical? Yes, but I think a lot of people are going to lose interest in CFB because despite the playoff, it's only going to further entrench the system where only the same 5 teams ever win a title and nobody else has a chance but it's way more expensive and kids quit on you half way through a season to protect their draft status or transfer to get more playing time

Yeah, something tells me that if Texas got embarrassed every week in their first SEC season and suffered a beat down in College Station and it was A&M against Ohio State this weekend none of these complaints about the sanctity of college football would ever come up.

There are not nearly as many fans like you as there are fans that watch because they love to watch football. The day you and those like you quit watching (which will never actually happen) will not even be a blip on the radar screen.

There are T-shirt fans, but the money and the bulk of support for these programs comes from the alumni base and current students.

If you lose that there will be nothing left but tshirt fans and they'd lose interest once it was no longer bigtime college ball

If it goes minor leagues, the money would evaporate along with the enormous tv deals and the players would hate it because they'd be traveling around for peanuts trying to showcase their skills for the league

Like it or not, the players need the schools just as much the schools need the players

Players are only getting big nil dollars because they are playing for big schools that are supported by massive tv deals and massive alumni bases with lots of money that they are putting into their school's program

Because of the money involved, you will never see this go full minor leagues where teams no longer associated with schools
