Alabama struggled this year with a coaching change, but no question, the Bama program has been the gold standard for the past 15 years.

If DeBoer goes 7-5 or 8-4 next year for Bama, he's gone. Won't even make it to the bowl game.

9-3 would depend on the manner of the 3 losses and who they lost to. But he still could be gone.

A&M brass, (John Sharp and company) and the A&M culture would make excuses for a 7-5/8-4 result next season, and then the year after that, the Ags maybe win a big game or show slight improvement. And bam, lifetime contract and no offset.

A&M leadership cares about 1 thing and 1 thing only, their bottom line. Jerry Jones 2.0. Money, money, money is the top priority, winning is secondary.

This year - the pinnacle of the season was the LSU game.
Critical notes from that game:
1. LSU was unprepared for the backup running QB.
2. 3 interceptions by LSU gave us a very short field all 3 times => leading to 2 TDs and 1 FG.
3. 2 missed FGs by LSU, plus a third fumbled snap (extremely rare) on FG attempt

I don't know what Elko said after that win, but the results speak for themselves.
1. Nussmeir threw for over 400 yards. You better believe Saban after that game would have said "proud of the fight, guys battled back, but we still gave up 400 yards passing, poor tackling and way too many mistakes on defense"
2. Stupid penalties by Shemar Turner and others, that continued all season
3. Ags didn't win another power 5 game again the rest of the season, going 1-4

The media and coaches are telling everyone it was still a successful season, the culture has changed. But the result is the same. Until we all collectively say, no the season was a failure, then 8-5 will continue to be tolerated.

So will a lot of our fans. Its why there's far less pressure at A&M. We have a large group that makes excuses and prefers to keep their heads in the sand

I'm getting esoteric and going back to my undergrad philosophy classes at A&M with this, but I remember having a class-wide discussion/debate when we were going over systems theory about the philosophical proposition known as POSIWID.

It stands for "the purpose of a system is what it does." This is basically the lens through which I have viewed most things in life ever since, and I think it is pretty accurate.

If you're evaluating a system, and you want to know its purpose, just look at what it actually does. If the promoters of the system try to tell you that its purpose is to do something other than what it does, ignore them and look at what the system actually does in practice.

The Texas A&M athletic department, and more specifically our football program, consistently does only one thing exceptionally well: generate revenue for itself. As far as I am concerned, that is its purpose, not to win championships.

Now, is it within the realm of possibility that the purpose of the football program is, in fact, to win championships, but it has just been failing miserably to do that for the last 85 years? Maybe that's possible. But what is the likelihood that a system was created for the primary purpose of winning championships and failed to do so for 85 consecutive years? The far more likely explanation is that the people running our athletic department now and for the last 85 years view the football program first and foremost as a revenue generator and a branding and marketing supplement for the university, and actually winning games/championships is a distant second or third priority.

What is the solution? I don't know. But you won't convince me our football program's number one priority is winning a championship until we win one or at least play for one. It's a revenue generator, which is why mediocrity is tolerated as long as dollars keep coming in.

The tldr version is he's saying our athletic department only cares about making money.....not championships.
Therefore the athletic department has been successful in its mission.
If we want to win, the focus needs to be on winning and not money

IMO there's SOME truth to that...but prime example that is NOT the case is giving Jimbo such a dumb ass extension

If you TRULY believe this, why are you here? If you know the team you like has zero shot to ever win then why would you waste any time being a fan? If in your heart, you believe there is ZERO chance your team can compete, why even spend a minute on a message board talking about it? Sure, you can go to the games and have fun tailgating and enjoy the crowds and wins when they happen, but it kinda seems pointless to invest so much energy if you believe they don't ever have a shot to win.

If you think they only care about money, why do you keep giving them yours?

Ohio State is going to humiliate the sips on their way to winning a national title. This may come as a shock to you, but the Buckeyes are not poor.

Maybe, but Alabama is begging people to give them money to help increase NIL. Do they have the money buy out DeBoer's 8 year/$87m contract? A&M is definitely struggling from buying out Jimbo and we have a ****load more money than Bama does

The lack of football knowledge on here sometimes shocks me. Elko will win a championship here. The guy has been successful everywhere. He took over a mess of a program. Elko is not lazy. He does not need fan pressure. He will put pressure on himself. He is getting rid of the players who won't get with the program. And our fans whine because "I liked that guy." The football stupid sip fans said the same things about Sark after his first two seasons. I am not "pumping sunshine" Elko is going to get A&M there. It may cost you your favorite player but he will and is getting guys in here that will do the work it takes. Losing Moss, Owens etc hurt us late. Weigman going crazy hurt. But like I said Elko is getting the right guys in here. All this doom and gloom after year one shows just as much craziness as the sips wanting Sark fired after year one. Don't be sip-like. You have to build a championship program. Saban was on the hot seat after one season at Alabama. If A&M is not a 10 win playoff contender next season I will comeback and say I was wrong. But the football signs to me says I am not.

We just paid a coach $70mm to leave, if it was soley about money, Jimbo would still be here.

As it turns out, hiring a head coach that consistently wins at a high level is extremly difficult.

Take Georgia, look at how they have been historically before Smart.

Alabama before Saban? Google the last championship they had before him.

Texas is trending upwards in year 3 with Sark. They have one national championship in the last 60 years.

Why would that be a shock to anyone that follows college football? They supposedly spent more on their current team than just about any other program this year.

We were an elite program in 80s-90s and tu was trash. We have been on the cusp since joining the SEC with just a few pieces missing. We were and will be again preferred over other schools because our network truly loves kids, know how to mentor kids, and our school not t shirt fans truly want football to be great, has the resources and the most unique and passionate TEXAS intense and friendly culture of any place on Earth. A few losses and other schools with their semi committed non invested fan bases go by the way side. Win here and it's legend status for life. Other places barely draw crowds for any non marquee game.

Excellent point, and I reference that in my OP. Slight improvement results in top dollars paid. That contract was beyond awful, especially no offsetting language, We retired 3 generations of the Fisher family. He never has to coach again. For what? going 9-1 in a Covid year with 1 marquee win against Florida and a 28 point loss to Alabama.

This is why I bring up Jerry Jones, because I'm from Dallas. I went to A&M and I'm also a lifetime Cowboys fan. Money is top priority.

But Jerry's problem is his loyalty to a fault. He gets too close to players, coaches, personnel that are avg, and subsequently overpays them. For example... Tony Romo, Jason "The Clapper" Garrett, Dak Prescott. He listens too much to his players.... "Oh we were close, we made it to the first round of the playoffs and lost, but we had this injury, or this/that happened... next year will be different" And then the cycle just repeats itself over and over again.

Dak Prescott will never win the Super Bowl. He is a good regular season QB. His record is 2-5 in the playoffs. You don't sign him for 60 million dollars per year. The only player who deserves that money is Mahomes => 3 super bowls and 6 straight conference championship game appearances. 15-3 playoff record.

Jimbo showed early on that he didn't deserve any contract, and I'm not paying 75mill to a guy that hasn't accomplished anything besides an Orange Bowl victory against UNC.

I believe DeBoer would be owed ~60 million if they fired him after this coming season. I would kill to see that. Alabama would find out overnight how hard it is to compete nowadays without NIL funds

You mean the messy roster that had draft picks on defense? He's a former d-cord! Oh, and he arrived with a 5 star qb that had SEC experience and a 4-star QB.

Not sure what football games you were watching - but I saw plenty of laziness from Elko - especially the second half of the season. Plenty of poor tackling by players and lack of zone defense readiness. And this is from a head coach who specializes in defense. Also some boneheaded play calling by Klein and company that Elko should have stepped in and said "enough is enough". Case in point is the number of running up the middle plays when obviously our offensive line was struggling...

I don't think that is the case at all. If that were true, we wouldn't have fired Jimbo and gone through all these coaching changes and buyouts. If we are guilty of anything it is that we have little man syndrome, and we will do anything we can to win. Build better facilities, spend ridiculous amounts of money, NIL, etc.

Unfortunately, none of it has worked. Call us cursed I guess but winning is a top priority from the brass at the top. Perhaps we are doing it all wrong, but it is bound to pay off at some point.

Not knowing how to win is a symptom of the fact that winning is not the primary purpose. Bring in personnel who know how to win. Have you ever heard somebody say "it's not that they don't want to raise money, it's that they don't know how?" Certainly not about our athletic department, because that is its number 1 purpose.

Elite? Only in the minds of Aggies was A&M elite in 80s and 90s. How, if we were elite, did we never even sniff a NC and managed a whopping one conference championship upon joining a legit conference?

Elite....hahahahahahahahaha.

Totally agree with OP re Jerry Jones. However, state school ADs are non profits. EV is nice and all, but end of the day it's a zero sum game in college. The last 20ish years you've seen obscene facilities and coaching salaries with exponential TV distributions. Money had to be spent somewhere to stay competitive. We're entering a new world where players will get direct comp. Coaching salaries will flatten and shiny new object facilities likely level off as well. You see it this year in the SEC coaching changes (ie none). Makes more sense to invest $10mm in roster/staff than $45mm to fire Venables. We're going back to the 80's in roster mgmt but it will be above board for all schools this time around.

Re Elko, make no mistake the way this season ended was a failure. Would wager he feels the same. I take comfort that a guy from Jersey who grew up in a trailer park and has the grit to get this far will continue to grind it out and fix the defense. Too early to say he's anything more than that right now. I take no comfort in close losses and an 8-5 season.

I wish our athletic department had the slightest idea of the gargantuan amount of money that would pour in if we actually won anything in football.

If they did, winning would become the only thing that they cared about.

A&M is the equivalent of Iowa/Michigan State in the B10 or North Carolina/Virginia Tech in the ACC. Mostly 8-4 or 7-5 with very occasional hope for a 10-win season.

The good news is John Sharp won't be making excuses for much longer.

As for Elko, it's anybody's guess. He's clearly a smart guy and knows how to coach defense, but his choice of coordinators going into year 1 was alarming. A bunch of eyes in the college football world were focused on his every move just waiting to celebrate failure, and he went with 2 guys who had a total of 5 years of coordinator experience between them. It doesn't really bolster my confidence when I see smart people do stupid things.

I don't know what Elko said after that win, but the results speak for themselves.
1. Nussmeir threw for over 400 yards. You better believe Saban after that game would have said "proud of the fight, guys battled back, but we still gave up 400 yards passing, poor tackling and way too many mistakes on defense"
2. Stupid penalties by Shemar Turner and others, that continued all season
3. Ags didn't win another power 5 game again the rest of the season, going 1-4

The media and coaches are telling everyone it was still a successful season, the culture has changed. But the result is the same. Until we all collectively say, no the season was a failure, then 8-5 will continue to be tolerated.
If you TRULY believe this, why are you here? If you know the team you like has zero shot to ever win then why would you waste any time being a fan? If in your heart, you believe there is ZERO chance your team can compete, why even spend a minute on a message board talking about it? Sure, you can go to the games and have fun tailgating and enjoy the crowds and wins when they happen, but it kinda seems pointless to invest so much energy if you believe they don't ever have a shot to win.

If you think they only care about money, why do you keep giving them yours?
I haven't been to a game since 2020, and I have never given a donation to the University/athletic department/foundation. EVER.

My comments are all in reference to the status quo. Change the status quo and its a whole different ballgame.

You mean the messy roster that had draft picks on defense? He's a former d-cord! Oh, and he arrived with a 5 star qb that had SEC experience and a 4-star QB.

Stop with the excuses
no excuses. Those guys were in a bad program for years. You do not change guys who have not been held accountable for years in one offseason. If you judge a coach that takes over a messed up program after one year you would have fired Sark and Saban and a lot of other coaches who are now winning big. Would you have done that?

DeBoer could go 6-6 and they wouldn't fire him after year 2. A coach with that contract isn't getting canned after 2 seasons.

The athletic department shelled out over a hundred million for a coach to try and do just that. It's not that they don't want to win, it's that they don't know how.

Not knowing how to win is a symptom of the fact that winning is not the primary purpose. Bring in personnel who know how to win. Have you ever heard somebody say "it's not that they don't want to raise money, it's that they don't know how?" Certainly not about our athletic department, because that is its number 1 purpose.
Who? Who are they bringing in? This is like saying all you have to do to become a billionaire is start a giant company that sells stuff everyone has to have. Great, but how?
