no doubt there were several false positives from the LSU game

that raised expectations when the talent was actually not there -- especially after Moss' injury

Yeah the LSU and Mizzou results turned into a bit of fools' gold… but you're right that Moss was probably one of the two players (along with Reed) that we absolutely couldn't stand to lose.

Amari Daniels played well and ran hard as the only effective RB option, but losing an All-SEC contending RB changed our playcalling calculus the rest of the year and I'm convinced if nothing else that Moss could've converted the 1st 4th&1 against Texas.

Defensively, I think we all see in hindsight that either the talent or the scheme or both really let us down (unable to tackle Lenoris Sellers, essentially zero DL production).

So far, Elko has been *saying* the right things and I'm encouraged by our transfer portal action, but next year is going to be the judge of whether or not the culture is actually changing around Kyle Field.

Saban went 7-6 his first year at Bama. Good thing that fan base didnt run him off after a mediocre 1st season

Everyone always cites this as an example, but they leave out the fact that Saban inherited a program that had just come off of probation. Because of that, Alabama had very limited scholarships when he first got there, meaning he had hardly any talent to work with in his first year there. There's a reason why most coaches wouldn't touch the Alabama job with a ten foot pole at the time.
And those same people ignore that we were also trending to being a 6-6 program? 12/13 the previous two seasons, with 30 guys leaving every offseason for 3 years in a row?

Elko had to grab a makeshift portal class with half a staff last minute in which many guys from San Diego State, Eastern Carolina, Kansas, Utah, Iowa, UAB, Tulane, Troy, Bowling Green, Louisiana Tech, Central Florida, etc., started multiple games for us, etc., in the sec.

Again, it's always the same. You guys come up with excuses for other coaches, but ignore all the problems we face. Elko has a ton to prove and work on this season. Year 2 absolutely has to show improvement.

But it never ceases to amaze me how some of you can make excuses for Saban, Freeman, Sark, Smart, etc. act like all are somehow different than Elko in year one, etc. Yet we won't give Elko until at least year 2 before completely jumping ship.

This may be the dumbest and most ignorant post I've ever read on TexAgs and that's saying a lot because I've been here since day 1.

You might as well say we built Kyle Field over an Indian burial ground because that's about the depth of reasoning shown on here.

"Don't care about winning." "Its our culture to put traditions etc above winning". "Elko's first year showed us nothing." Some of you guys are absolute dumbasses.

The lack of football knowledge on here sometimes shocks me. Elko will win a championship here.
You can not decide anything after a year with a 1st year coach. BUT good coaches improve their teams as the season progresses not crash/burn.

I would have rather seen 3 early season losses then improvement by years end. What happened with the team imploding is all on the coaching staff.

ASU got better = good coaching
We got worse = bad coaching

It has nothing to do with the players. It has everything to do with the coaching.

My kids have been part of many sport teams. You can see who were the good and bad coaches with little to do with how many wins they had all year.

I didn't read this entire thread, but this stood out. You honestly believe that one variable, coaching, is what determines the trajectory of of team during the course of a season? A single variable? I mean that is just stupid.

Here is why we will never win. No reason not to go after established players like this. Carson would be a major upgrade at QB:

Not only that, but his data is just flat wrong. Good coaches have teams that get worse all the time, particularly in year one. Particularly if you lack depth, and have key injuries like we did, too.

Saban lost his last 4 regular season games after being 6-2. Sark lost 6 of his last 7.

And he points out Arizona state, when that same staff went 3-9 in year one with getting beat by 36, 36, and 52 in 3 of their last 4 games.

We were an elite program in 80s-90s and tu was trash. We have been on the cusp since joining the SEC with just a few pieces missing. We were and will be again preferred over other schools because our network truly loves kids, know how to mentor kids, and our school not t shirt fans truly want football to be great, has the resources and the most unique and passionate TEXAS intense and friendly culture of any place on Earth. A few losses and other schools with their semi committed non invested fan bases go by the way side. Win here and it's legend status for life. Other places barely draw crowds for any non marquee game.
Elite? Only in the minds of Aggies was A&M elite in 80s and 90s. How, if we were elite, did we never even sniff a NC and managed a whopping one conference championship upon joining a legit conference?

Elite....hahahahahahahahaha.
We sniffed them from about '90-'96. If not for the probation year, we'd have a natty in '94.
