Until our resources are used to buy the refs like the sips do, we will never win it all.

Was Jackie a fit here before he came in from Pittsburgh?

Absolutely Not.

My reason for asking is though my handle says 85, I'm Class of '03. I had a conversation with a family member before the Elko hire about Kiffin.

Was he really discounted or not considered bc he said mean things about us or other people? But we are ok with Jackie despite what the Paternos of the world thought of him at the time?

We've had 1 10-win season since 1998 (26 seasons) Kiffin now has 3 in his last five seasons.

Stop hitting us with facts!

Seriously, entirely different world then as compared to now. And I played for Coach so I can admit a little bias. Coach Sherrill wasn't the monster Paterno made him out to be. Maybe Paterno was covering for Sandusky even that far back, but I could be wrong.

Jackie was also AD for a bit, a position not found anymore that I'm aware of at major colleges. Again, entirely different world of college athletics.

Us not winning more is a combo of coaching screw ups & player screw ups unfortunately occurring at the same time. That is what we are consistent at doing, unfortunately.

Well Paterno was pissed because Pitt, in state rival wasn't supposed to beat their big bro. But it's Paterno.

Jackie was a Bum Bright hire. I know very little of how it all happened as I was in HS. I do know Jackie wasn't well received by many at A&M initially.

I feel vindicated for wanting kiffin bc his team was playing at a high level at the end of the year as evidenced by the mud hole they stomped in duke.

I felt vindicated bc we looked as sharp as a bowling ball and tissue paper soft in our bowl game vs a similarly weak opponent.

Yes he lost to Florida and Kentucky but I truly believe he does more w less. I think we have more overall talent year in year out. And I believe our talent level would go even higher w kiffin.

I feel vindicated bc I feel very confident we would have scored more than 13 points vs notre dame with kiffin and won that game.

I feel vindicated bc I feel we would have put up much more than zero offensive points vs the longhorns and won that game.

I feel vindicated bc kiffin is not going to run the ball up the middle on 4th and 1 when we have been getting stoned all night by an obviously much more physical team.

Why did we play so soft in the bowl game and vs Texas? That is concerning and upsetting considering 3 nfl defensive linemen.

Kiffin consistently puts up high point totals year after year. We do not.

I also don't think kiffin got out over his skis going on a midseason "this is a real program " rant…embarrassing in hindsight.

Let's save that speech for the end of the season when we've won 10 games. You know 10 wins like kiffin does regularly.

I think he's a fairly brilliant offensive mind. That's about it. He'd make a fantastic offensive coordinator here but he'd never "stoop down" to the coordinator level, his ego is too gigantic for that anymore. And I just wouldn't want that dooooshbag as the face of my program/HC when his results just don't really justify it

You see what you want to see. And by all means state vindicated a few more times.

It's funny that you try to say he would have scored more in some of our games. Yet he lost this year to two teams we beat. And he lost at home to a horrible Kentucky team bc they did not score.

He did not win this year with the most talented team he's ever had.

So it's more he's just *******.

Ehhh...let me see, nice guy coach with perennial 8-4 vs a ******** a-hole who runs a tight program to win national championships. Say...Bobby Knight type..

I don't know. I kinda lean towards winning national championships.

For sure, Kentucky is a bad loss. He's an offensive mind and brilliant play caller that didn't score enough points. But overall he won 10 games this year in a season that some would consider a disappointment. An achievement becoming more and more rare for A&M.

My concern going forward with Elko is he has to get his side of the ball right quickly. He's a defensive guy. He has to get it right next year or it's not likely to pan out. 3 of our losses would most likely have been wins with an average defensive performance. Yeah yeah I get it Year 1 etc. but does anyone feel confident in saying that the defense this year was better than last year or at least trending in the right direction?

Except for 98, RC's wins came early with many of Jackie's recruits and players.

Maybe that's our problem, we worry way too much about fits and image. Let's hire someone that can win when it counts.

He's a bad fit because the first 11-win season and/or quarterfinal/semifinal CFP appearance, he would leave for another job regardless of what we paid him.

At some point, you have to look beyond the W/L (even IF he'd do well there, and I won't automatically give you that) and look at character -- at least to some extent.

No doubt.

To me, Elko showed nothing this year that he's a great coach.

Only thing I remember is him standing on the sideline looking pissed off. Hell, I can do that with the best of em.

Nick Saban and Urban Meyer weren't exactly Mr. Rodgers, but they won an absurd amount of games. What's the point of competing in any sport if you never win when it matters most? At the end of the day, you play to win the game, and coaches that aren't worried about pleasing everybody usually win a lot of games.

What has Kiffin ever really done of note as a hfc?
Hamburger Dan
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Kiffin has a head coaching record of 105 wins and 52 losses, I believe in 11-12 years of being a head coach at the college level. How many coaches at A&M won over a 100 games in their career / 12 years? USC was helmet school job, but had hit the skids, Tennessee, was short lived, Florida Atlantic is a nobody, he's won the majority of his wins in the SEC. Kiffin is a weird duck, but he'd be an upgrade at A&M.

Outside of the COVID season, his worst season (out of 5) at Ole Miss is where we have lived for the majority of the 21st Century (8-5) but yeah we're too good for him.

This wasn't meant as a reply specifically to Dan but to those that think Kiffin is below us.

Hamburger Dan
How long do you want to ignore this user?
He's known for offensive production. Not much of that in College Station, since JFF. His defensive stats aren't great, but they haven't been so hot in C Stat, either. Texas is in their second year of playoffs, played for an SEC championship, and has been one of the odds on favorite to win the CFB Playoffs all year. What if they do win it all? How many, more years will it take to overtake them, with coaches that with a ceiling of 8-9 wins?

Texas A&M tries to get the coach and players to fit the school.

Winning teams try to bring the right fit to the players and coach.

This is exactly why we lose, we will lose next year, and we will lose forever.

Still would be a deuchbag ***** who makes decisions like his pants are on fire. We all know the offense would be stellar but at the same time, he's never really been known for his defense (perhaps not for a lack of trying, such as buying all those defensive studs for this year's team).

He'd be Sumlin 2.0 here. A&M people would tick him off and run him off. He'd never field a defense and wear them out with his offensive philosophy. And his cool bro approach would not garner the recruits here it can at Ole Miss.
