The real reason recruiting rankings are almost useless is because it captures the development of a bunch of 17 and 18-year-olds rather than a more accurate projection of what they'll be like when they are 20, 21 or 22.

You could see from the first quarter on, ASU had no business playing the type of athlete that texas has.

But they made a game of it somehow. Amazing. Texas finds a way into the final four by playing a few weaker contenders while the real powerhouses (OSU/Oregon) are duking it out. That's very lucky...as usual

I was told that only 5 star players are able to shed tackles, pressure the passer and get separation?

    This can't be….

Also ASU has a tiny NIL pool. Their coach has been lobbying all year for more money.

Who'd have thought ASU would remind us of what the game should be? Ref interference will kill this sport if it isn't scrutinized and monitored/penalized.

    100%.

Folks fall in love with rankings.

Most have no clue how these kids get ranked in the 1st place.

How did those rankings work out for Jimbo?

Yet every #1 ranked recruiting class for the past 2 decade has won a national championship.

    Well, except, you know....

One thing ASU has running out their ears is hot chicks. The California state schools put in more stringent admission requirements a decade back and all the hot, dumb girls head to Arizona and ASU now.

He wasn't ranked by recruiting sites. He signed to Sacramento State and then was a 3* as a transfer and was the #31 running back (according to 247).

I wonder how their transfers compare to Elko's, which leagues they're from, and how they're different than many of our's like at DB.

This is nothing new. Refs have been in sip pockets since day 1. We just keep coming back for more with our heads in the sand making sure everyone knows we're the lovable losers just here to make sure everyone has a good time.

Above all need player development and player evaluation. Usually recruiting rankings indicates who has talent that when actually developed, has the potential of going pro. Jimbo was good at accumulating potential. Sherman was good at evaluation. Sumlin was good at a bit of both(mostly WRs). Can't remember a time when we had both.

Thought coach needed time to recruit his players and at least 3-4 yrs.. Indiana coach and ASU both made playoffs in first year with less nil, less resources, less recruiting but more coaching.

Asu doesn't have to survive a sec schedule to make the playoffs. They are a middle of the road sec team with those athletes.

Recruiting aside, they really came in with a poor game plan, though. Their attack in their first drive was centered around completing short passes and establishing a run. Neither worked because that played right into t.u.'s strength. I don't think they threw the ball downfield at all in the first quarter -- maybe a time or two. Hell, the fake punt was their largest yardage gain up until that point. Remember their first drive, t.u. bailed them out with a running into the punter foul.

Obviously the first t.u. drive and punt return didn't help, but ASU could have won this going away with a better offensive game plan (throwing the ball downfield, even if it didn't work on the first drive or two), everything else being equal. t.u. did not respect their QB until he started completing passes that mattered.

Recruiting rankings mean less and less if you aren't getting top 5 classes. The portal can fix lots of recruiting mistakes. Of course, you can't make those same mistakes in the portal. I.e., A&M
