I thought he'd be a bad fit, but what really went down? Did the program screw up in communication with their bosses?

The myth is TexAgs prevented the hire. The facts are murkier. But Bjork left because if it.

My speculation is we had a deal in place but not yet executed. It was strategically leaked and the fan blow back led to A&M pulling out of the deal.

Long story short.

Aparently Bjork really wanted him and despite the important people being against it they didn't stop him from communicating with him. The issue came up when Bjork went behind the regents and BMAs backs and offered him the job without their blessing.

It was stopped because someone important wasn't happy and the public outcry was strong.

Two guys flew out to wherever and offered Stoops the job. Word got back to College Station, before they did. Some different guys said "oh hell no" and put a stop to that. Then those guys & others got together and told the first guys "you'll be hiring Elko". And there was happiness throughout Aggie Land.

I've heard everything from he was on a plane headed to CS and it got turned around mid flight to the plane had actually landed at Easterwood and Bjork boarded the plane and told him the deal was off.

Will the specifics ever truly be known? Probably not. There will always be competing narratives between Bjork and Stoops and Texas A&M and Kentucky that will forever keep the truth hidden. Regardless, the hiring process was, from all accounts, not handled very well.

I'm still trying to comprehend who thought hiring Stoops would go over well? WTF were these people thinking?

Stoops would have been a garbage hire too.

Still can't believe Bjork failed upwards to one of the elite AD jobs nationally right after that and then saying we need austerity measures in place for football to compensate for Jimbo buyout. Totally absurd.

The timeline is a bit murky to me but when did Bjork bolt for OSU after the Jimbo firing/Elko hiring debacle?

I've always wondered if Bjork already knew he was headed to OSU and thus put in a half assed effort to replacing Jimbo as he was already half way out the door. Either way, he royally mishandled the situation.

From my understanding his contract was close to expiring and we weren't going to renew but I'm not sure if that was decided before or after the Stoops fiasco.

Bjork playing butt-buddies and hiring incestually with his agent's other client. Though elkos agent is also… Jimmy sexton. Would have been an Egregiously poor hire

I don't know for sure, but I think the idiots in charge were about to get played by bjork and sexton by helping Kentucky get out from under stoops contract. Sexton had already suckered us on the fisher extension and figured he would go back to the well once more. The really extremely sad thing is, it appears the people here signed off on the deal until f16 came to the rescue!

A lot of it had to do with this site. Word leaked here early and many donors mobilized en masse.

Things went effing nuts here. I don't know what role we really played but there had to have been some role. Things went crazy even for zoo standards and well then somehow it stopped the implosion with a zoo level implosion

Im sure you can trace back my posts to that date. I was very much against stoops, as I have family in Kentucky and there's no way he would ever be a good way going forward.

Stoops tried to claim he was the hardest working man in the oil business and we canceled the deal.

Billy said that Bjork and a BMA flew out and offered him the job. By the time they got back, it had leaked, and basically everyone who heard it flipped out.

Stoops had already told his team he was leaving - by the end of the night, he released a statement saying he loved Kentucky and wasn't leaving.

I found out because a guy I know in KY texted me laughing his arse off.

Maybe he turned it down. Realized A&M had a ton of issues, he wasn't getting a raise and he thought he was better off at Kentucky. Possibly all true.

We fired Jimbo Fisher, and the search consisted of his former DC at FSU and his former DC at A&M.

We've had two former RC assistants as head coaches.

So, for the people that already turned on Elko, where do you go next, Franchione tree or Sumlin tree? Spavital helped get Baylor to the Texas Bowl this year, and Tim DeRuyter recently became available.

I think one of the biggest mistakes was firing Jimbo before having a quality replacement already agreed to terms. After Jimbo was fired, the legitimate head coach options that were being floated around were pretty disappointing. The best candidates apparently didn't have interest and/or the timing wasn't right for them. But, I think the timing could've been worked around if the top coaches were really interested. It was a total mis-handling of the situation.

I actually think Stoops is a really good football coach who would field a physical and competitive team here. His overall record is marred by being at Kentucky, but he has turned them into a program that is actually capable of stepping up and beating decent SEC teams from time to time, which it did not used to be. He had two 10-win seasons during Jimbo's tenure here, which is two more than Jimbo had. If you look back before his tenure, they had decades of 4-5 win seasons (and even 2-3 wins) being the norm.

That being said, I don't think it would have worked out in the long term. I don't think he's a good personality fit, he's not an elite recruiter, and I think his ceiling here would have been making us a top-20 type program. Elko may have the same ceiling, but Elko was at least familiar with A&M, the personnel, and the state of the program.

Smoke and mirrors.

Stoops situation was used to bring down Elko's asking price...which I assume was successful.

I do not have any concrete evidence, just always thought this is what really happened.
