Hire a coordinator who won a Natty. There's a reason Lanning, Sark, and Smart have competitive teams. At the least hire someone who was a coordinator for a team that finished top 10? Then you get Day and Freeman included too, and Dillingham. I am starting to think Elko might have been the money saving hire until our coffers can reload. Also don't hire a guy who rode extremely talented QB play (see Malzahn, Fisher).

Its hard to be #1. Winning the Natty takes a lot of hard work and luck.

Absolutely, but the idea is teams that are competitive for natties are successful. In other words successful coaches have the aforementioned qualities.

Nobody with a brain wants to come here. It's just going to get worse.
I hate tu. It's in my blood.

We hire people who want to coast. Successful coordinators are hungry and have the culture to win.

Elko was a simple hire for people who don't like to challenge themselves at all. It seems to be what we do around here.

We hired people with zero track record of success in running a program long term. Need to evaluate removing the board of regent members, president, Chancellor.

Don't see A&Ms academic success rising not their athletic programs..not sure what they are doing.

Wait…..you mean hiring an OC out of the Big12 and DC that got fired from a terrible SEC team isn't a good idea? Someone tell Elko quick.

If it wasn't clear I meant hire those coordinators to be head coaches. Generally successful coordinators who have seen head coaches run great programs can build great programs. It may not be that all great coordinators make great HCs, but almost all great HCs were once great coordinators who won at a high level.

I was for this choice over Elko. What he might have lacked in experience was overshadowed by the fact he's worked his entire career under Smart and Saban. We need a total shift in culture, not some guy that had been here before.

A LOT of truth in this. To be elite, and after all that is the aim here - be elite and one of the top 5-6 programs year in and year out, takes elite individuals that have experienced success at the ultimate level. This starts at AD and works its way down the organization. Coordinators are key but it starts with the AD and HC mind set.

We aren't in that elite group not because of lack of NIL funds, nor facilities or support. It's not the school's traditions either (Yell leaders etc). It's the culture inside the program, the expectations of how to be elite and be intentional about everything the program does internally every day.

Alberts has to have a blue print or it will just continue to be the same old poo.

Fan expectations need to be checked as we all know. Just accept it, until we dominate good teams and are winning 10+ annually, forget Natty talks etc. It's ridiculous. The over under of 8 or so wins each year is probably a good place to start.

Being elite is difficult. Georgia fired one their most successful coaches ever in Mark Richt after 15 seasons with 6 SEC title appearances and two titles plus a 70% conference winning percentage. He was beloved by the fan base. But they wanted to push the bar that extra smidge to get to the elite level. It worked. It could have back fired. First year was nothing special. But that is how hard it is to get to that level.

One last thought - I love most of the kids in the program, but for all the hype of recruiting and talent, I see 7-8 SEC teams that just look bigger, stronger, faster than our group. Especially on both lines. Sadly thought TU's lined dwarfed ours and completely controlled the game.

Anyway, this game was for nothing more than to give some optimism to the fan base for next year. It absolutely did the reverse.

Back to the OP, it does start at the coordinators and entire staff. As for the HC, doesn't have to be a name, but the resume and experiences are huge. I like Elko more than I dislike, but I'll leave you with this question. Based on year one so far obviously, late in a tight game with a solid opponent, do you have confidence in this staff that they have the players prepared and that the players believe in the staff?

Their D has not been elite this year. They gave up a ton of yards and points in games. Miss State and UMass come to mind plus the 567 yards to Georgia Tech four weeks ago.

He has elite talent to work with. They should have had a better year on that side of the ball. Obviously they still have a great shot at winning it all, but the D is a notch below 2021 and 2022 level. Solid resume for certain.
