Back in the day…

Every year, prior to the merger with the AFL, the winners of the NFL Eastern and Western Conference Championships would go to the NFL Championship…

But the losers would play one final game called the Playoff Bowl…

It was a sheer money grab by the owners and the players HATED it, only playing because of the extra game check…

It was a worthless, LOSERS Bowl…
Reminds me of the current CFB Bowl Season…

CFB has truly become like the NFL…

Yet that evolved into the super bowl.

Yep.

The NFL model is great for the NFL

The College Football model was so amazing in its unique idiosyncrasies and undefined championship with every single game being critical

Now so lame

Funny, I don't recall that. Sounds great though

I remember it. I think Dallas played in one (or more) of them.

Back when the NFL (and now, college football ) was watchable.

But every single game wasn't critical

By midsession only the games for like 3 or 4 teams were critical, and sometimes even less than that

Too young to know about this, but I vividly remember the Flint, Michigan Megabowl. That was an instant classic.

3. They were 1-2 in them and lost to the Rams, 31-0, in the last one. Ironically, they were all in the Orange Bowl where they'd go on to play in 3 Super Bowls.

Better yet was the Hall of Fame Game being between the league champs and a college all star team.

Back in the 60s and early 70s many of the guys weren't making much money, so another $2000 to play in meaningless game was a big deal

If I remember, the players got paid, but most of the the money went to the NFL Players Pension Fund. The game was held in Miami as incentive to get players to show up, even though Miami had an AFL team. Vince Lombardi call it a Losers Game for Losers and some other choice words that would draw the monitors attention.

In the mid 60's they had some decent crowds, but it lasted longer than the Third Place game at the NCAA Tournament.

As for College Bowls games, it's time to bring back the Bacardi Bowl in Havana.

That was the College All Star Game in July at Soldier Field. I think it was sponsored by the Chicago Tribune. How that game lasted as long as it did amazed me. Still surprised no one got hurt.

Not even close. That ran from '46-'81. You're right about the Pension fund, though.

Eliminate the Pro Bowl. Bring back the Playoff Bowl.

And the NCAA should bring back the 3rd Place Game
