There has to be some kind of balance where a guy can be comfortable and confident in his role but also understand that there is someone ready and willing to take his job.

I was just commenting on what LB12Diamond said - that we are already vested in our QB choice and not interested in paying another QB. Surely there is a QB, that if they entered the portal and had interest in A&M we would make an effort to bring them in.

Jeffy Lebby landed Jackson Arnold while he was the offensive coordinator at OU but left after only one season with Arnold to take over Mississippi State. Arnold didn't follow Lebby then and stayed put to take over the Sooners' offense.

Now that Arnold is available again, though, Lebby could use a quarterback, and Arnold has already committed to Lebby and his offense once before.

You missed my point entirely.

A&M is not in the market bc we are not paying top level money for a top level portal QB. However, there are not any top level QBs out there.

I looked at 247's top 15 portal QBs at this time. Malik Murphy is number one. That should help you understand that the market is not that great. FYI, Lagway is not on it bc he's committed to Florida like most solid QBs are. Committed to the school they are at. Majority of QBs in the portal are in it for a reason.

Ooof, what a blow to State. Van Buren was good and IMHO is going to be a great college QB, played above his paper as a true fish on an otherwise bad team.

As for Elko and Reed, Elko is old school, all jobs are always open to be won. It's like many of you forgot he replaced Weigman w/ Reed.

As for Reed, the kid has only started 7 or 8 games and has played well, his upside potential and ceiling are very high. We are NOT going to bring in a QB to compete for the starting job, period. Neither would any other team in this same situation. FL isn't going to bring in someway to take QB1 from Lagway, Bama didn't bring in a QB to unseat Milroe last 2 season, etc.

Elko is recruiting very well and made good use of the transfer portal last year, and I expect to have a good portal haul this season as well.

We were a few plays away from 10-2 or 9-3 (also a few plays away from 7-5 admittedly). The glass is more than half-full if you will take a step back and stop being a self hating BAS Aggie.

"Everybody thinks" is always the start of a rational, fact based argument.

It's also rich to see people suddenly want to use "supporting cast" as an argument against Reed, but completely ignoring that Reed had to face the last 3.5 games without Moss (after losing Owens pre-season).

Reed has a ton he needs to improve on, no doubt.

But this definitely feels like an argument of "almost no statistical data suggest what I want to suggest, so let's just throw out - supporting cast".

There are tons of kids I'd love to see us go after/land. Most of this just aren't realistic. My guess is our coaches understand the dynamics and the type of $$ they'd have to throw to get a guy that was a sure-fire upgrade, and they've decided to try to spend those resources elsewhere.

I'd love to have LaNorris Sellers, or any "already proven elite" guy out there - but those probably aren't realistic. So then you're talking about kids that aren't absolute sure-fire improvements but will still cost quite a bit to acquire. I would rather go after some OL upgrades, some guys to supplement our defensive backfield and - most importantly - a few WR that can win 1-on-1 battles than go pay a ton for a guy that is only marginally or arguably better than Reed was as a fish.

Fair enough - there is no one in the portal NOW that is compelling enough to go after. My comment is what QB - IF they decided to enter the portal - would change that for A&M coaching staff..

Maybe I misread into your comment what you meant, but I thought you were saying the die is cast. We've got our starter and the only thing we are looking for now is experienced back-up to Reed (the already vested and paid QB), so we don't have to rely on RS fish as the back-up.

I wasn't really arguing with you. Just asking - don't you think that IF the right QB entered the portal, one that would be seen as a "sure-fire improvement" (as JDCAG put it) to Reed (and maybe that is a fairytale), our staff would pursue, or no, they are good with standing pat.

No, I don't. Because we have already likely negotiated NIL with Reed, or are in talks, and going after an elite, top 5 QB in the country type of player who would never enter the portal anyway but let's just say they did....would not be kept a secret. Reed would learn about our pursuit, enter the portal, and we'd likely lose out on a bidding war to a more championship ready school for this top 5 QB in the country, and lose Reed and piss off the locker room in doing so.
