The overly dramatic motions, synchronized dancing and spinning around by the yell leaders is embarrassing. The yell leaders are mostly in the Corps., in military training no less! The dancing and spinning are a terrible reflection of who they represent. It's something that friends from other school's love to laugh, joke and tease about. "The gay cheer boys dancing around in their milkman suits." If we want a dance routine, let's get a girls drill team out there. Otherwise, lead the yells without the flamboyant bs, like they did in the 70's and 80's.

This may have already been said, but we have to decide as a group that either we care what the world thinks or we don't care what the world thinks. I realize there will be different opinions, but for me, I choose to not care what other people think and ignore the haters. Otherwise, our lives will be dependent upon what other people think. To me, that's no way to live. Especially for something this trivial.

What about what WE think?

Discussing Aggie traditions is the oldest Aggie tradition.

Then why do you care if the football team is successful? Honest question. If we don't care about the perception of the school, why do we care about the perception of the football program?

Who decides on the changes? I guess the yell leaders have the artistic freedom to make any theatrical changes they want?

I don't live anywhere near Alma. So not in my neighborhood. And I don't base my facts on people at Alma's Sonic. I go by what the Dairy Queen crowd says.
Really?

All schools have some "embarrassing " aspect about them. Changing who we are because of the opinions of others is not a reason to change. Aggies should know this.

I saw my first Texas A&M game in 1986 against Rice. We won 45-10. It was an early date with my then girlfriend, now wife.

I was shocked at the Yell Leaders, simply stunned.

Here were a few guys spread around the stadium. Could I hear them? No. Then they would signal what the next yell would be. And you know what? All the fans would mimic the sign, turn around and give the sign to the people behind them so everyone knew what the yell was. What?! And then what happened? The Yell Leaders measured off the cadence and then… THE WHOLE STADIUM RESPONDED!! What?! It was surreal. And it happened over and over throughout the game. Maybe this happens at other college football venues, but I've never seen it.

Same when Aggies sing the Aggie War Hymn. It's stunning to watch it in a packed stadium. I remember the Alabama / A&M game and the Bama fans that were sitting close to us were slacked jawed.

A&M is different in the best possible ways.

Milk men have not been around since the 60's. Most folks born after that have never seen a " Milk man" or how they dressed.

If y'all are really that embarrassed, just tell people you didn't go to that stuff. It's that simple.
The point is that if not done in the first place it wouldn't be an issue that had to be defended.

We have all sorts of traditions, some of them weird. This is one of them. But I'm okay with them and we shouldn't care what outsiders think.

Midnight yell is not the problem.

The war hymn and saw them off is. It's absolutely stupid to do that all the time when it's against a team that's not Texas.

It needs to change man.
Not a fan of this take. Everyone always points out the War Hymn (including the sips), but never acknowledge that it is a 2 way street. There are a lot of them that do things like this.

But is it the WHOLE song? Texas's fight song does it as well. It mentions A&M.

Read the comments to this video of the Yell Leader at Midnight Yell before the texas game. Lol. Seriously, why can't this yell leader just walk and talk normally. This is too goofy that it should shame us all.

Hire real joke writers for Yell Practice. Tell a few real funny jokes about the other team, then you can tell a traditional corny Ol Rock story. The same tired jokes they tell don't work in a world of You Tube.

Simplify everything: Ditch the weird poses when you pace back and forth. You can still pace if you want for some tradition. Trim down the Yell motions to what is necessary.

Ditch the painted overalls

Interesting. I live up here and all the Arky folks that live up here around me are always backing and rooting for TAM except when they play us. They all wanted us to beat Texas and always tell me how much they like the FTAB and Parsons, etc.
Oh you fibber, meet me at Alma Sonic! lol I live in your neighborhood and Hog Fans Hate A&M, HATE! They 're bombing my facebook with that stupid WOKE Video! Do you get on Hogville.net? They made a thread of "teams you hate the most", Texas moving to the SEC dropped us to runner-up. They call us a Cult, Weird, Gheys, never stop joking about our BOY CHEERLEADERS!

I'm wondering if our recruits were impressed with Midnight Yell, last Friday? I was hoping they would not go, just like I was hoping we wouldn't run up the middle on 4th and goal. Both happened.
It's not about what other people think, it's about having something we enjoy!
It's about Culture, Make Aggie's Great Again!

So Texas A&M Aggies are not great now? When did that happen?

I hate midnight yell personally. I went one time when I was a student and never went back. As long as people are still going regularly they aren't going to change anything. I think if you literally just practiced the yells it would be fine. I do however think we need to add cheerleaders. Not get rid of the Yell Leaders, but just also have cheerleaders.

It's either get rid of the 'jokes' and focus on yells or make it a professional production and make the jokes funny and not a waste of time

I don't know who writes the stupid half-hearted insults but get some comedy writers to actually produce good jokes that don't embarrass us or blow up in our face after a loss and it will all be good

Yeah I was there with my family. I'm an Aggie thru and thru, but this threw us all off as old Aggies. I guess I don't remember this part, but I was really uncomfortable during the "story time" part of yell practice. It seemed abit ridiculous to me. Gig em

Agreed. When I bring non-Aggies to a game at Kyle they're always much more impressed by the Spirit of Aggieland than the War Hymn. They always ask why we don't do that one more often.
Actually, why not do the Spirit at the 1st quarter break instead of the War Hymn? I realize it isn't really a hype thing, but the yells at the end might make an impact. That would at least get the west side engaged a bit more.

Sincerely,

Old Ag

If you want cheerleaders, transfer to where there are some!!! Don't come to Texas A&M and try to change things, go to where you will be happy with what's at another school!

I would agree it needs a revamp. Overall, Midnight Yell is a great tradition. Need to modernize and make a little cooler… but it's more with the Yell Leaders. I love the guys and anyone who went to A&M knows how good these men are… give them cheerleaders so instead of looking gay, they look like badasses. Simple fix

Yell Leader is an elected position. Maybe someone can organize a "get some new jokes" bloc.

Curious if there's one Ag reading this thread that likes the story time segment of midnight yell.

Please let us know and pass on why you like it. Thanks in advance.

……..And to everyone who says "who cares what other people think" when we're the laughingstock of the internet, what other people think of you is called your reputation. Having a good reputation is important.
.

Lighten up Francis.

True, a good reputation is important. But a reputation (good or bad) of an institution like A&M is not determined by a benign video of a yell leader telling a ol' Rock story. Especially as it has any sway in the mind of potential student athletes or regular students considering A&M. Student athletes and regular students are coming to A&M to pursue excellence, grow, and hopefully have a great experience doing so. This has no impact on that in decision, unless a kid is flippant in their decision.
