It looks to me you have the front flipped. The SDE should be to the trips and the WDE to the weakside so he can help the flat. Nose shade should be on a 1 tech to the weakside and the 3 and 5 (SDE) to the trips.btglow87 said:btglow87 said:vander54 said:btglow87 said:
This alignment is also what every team attacked. This season we were stuck in the weak eagle 4-2-5 front. Which means we are going to try to defend a run game of 7 guys with 6... that is a hard ask against a talented team and our adjustment this season was to make the weak safety step up and fill and that didn't work vs South Carolina. The ran weak side pin and pull about 18 times for about 200 rushing. If we are going to be a 4-2-5 defense without too many adjustments ..... then we need to go find an Antonio Johnson type to player... that can fill the "Star" position. This year we didn't have one... so we played a 4-2-5 with a true nickel and the issue there is...... a true cover nickel isn't going to be able to play the C gap like a sam linebacker vs a pro set... We had BJ try to do that the other night and that's just not fair to that kid ... to ask him to do something he wasn't recruited to do. So we are either going to have to adjust the scheme to fit our personnel better or find a player in the portal, high school, or develop one this offseason who can fit that missing position. Every good team we played attacked the nickel and the weak side run because of our inability to bump the backers weak since they had to play strong side run... because the nickel was pass first in responsibility. Once teams found that inflexibility they made us pay for it over and over
I completely missed that about the star position. You're 100% right we never truly had one on the field. Uncharacteristic of Elko's defenses while he was here.
This is the problem..... if the passing strength is to the defensives right then the Nickel would be traveling over that way (the defensive right). The Mike would be over the weakside(left guard) and the End has to play the edge and contain. The only other help that way is the weak safety who is lined up at 10-11 yds deep (Ratcliffe). That is why the weakside pin and pull was so effective against us vs South Carolina. Because we were so predictable in our front and run defenders it made it easy to scheme up against it. Sark would do a lot of motion into trips ... if the backers bumped to help .... he ran it (4-1 box) if the backers stayed he had them throw the slip. If you have a true rover/star nickel back who can play the run like a Sam backer... then you can flip the 3tech strong bump the backers weak (having the Will hipped behind the end) and have a more tradtional 4-3 look without switching out the personnel.
Here is a good depiction of it vs trips. Yes the weakside edge is accounted for but behind him and outside is nothin (the corner is pass first so he doesn't count) the only other help weak is the safety who is deep. The reason we did this was because we didn't want to ask the Nickel to play run first responbilities but because of that it made us very limited in adjusting upfront.
Now if you bring a TE to the weakside it is another story. The SDE goes to the TE and the WDE goes to the trips.
I would believe you should play quarter-quarter half with the half on the weakside or a read cover 2.
