last time we had a chance at natty this far into season?

We actually have a legitimate chance to win the natty this year. Not saying our team is good enough, which we still might be, especially this year. But we actually control our own destiny. If we win our next 5 games, we win the national championship.

When was the last time we were in this position going into the last week of the season? Where we just have to win out and the natty is ours.

I'm thinking 2012, if I remember correctly if we beat LSU we go to Atlanta and if we win that we would have played for a national championship. Correct me if I'm wrong there.

Regardless this is a special season we shouldn't take for granted. Every team we will play from here on out is beatable, and our offense with Marcel gets better every week.

yeah so we didn't control our destiny in 2020 going into the last game of the season bc it was dependent on the committee.

yeah true, forgot that, so then we would have to go back to the 90s? I wasn't born yet, maybe further?

The funny thing. If we had beat Auburn. And Bama had won.

And we beat sips.

But lose to Bama in SEC title game. We most likely would have a road game at Georgia first round.

Well, if win Saturday, we play Georgia anyway at a neutral location with a SEC champ game and first round bye on the table.

Let's see what happens.

In 2012, we already lost 2 SEC games to Florida and LSU, and both losses were at home. If we had won one of those SEC home games, we would have won the SEC West and played Georgia in the SEC Championship Game.

In 2020, we had won 7 consecutive SEC games, including the last 6 by 11+ points each, but we didn't control our destiny.

Because of Florida's 24-17 upset over Ole Miss and Oklahoma's 24-3 rout of Alabama, we are still in the hunt for our first SEC Championship Game appearance, even after a heartbreaking 43-41 quadruple overtime loss. As a result, Georgia clinched an SEC Championship Appearance for the 4th straight year and for the 7th time in 8 years. Our only path to the College Football Playoffs is to beat Texas on Saturday and Georgia in the SEC Championship to become a 10-3 (6-2 SEC) SEC Champion.

I suppose that's technically true because of the new format, and if A&M beats Texas, Georgia, and some mix of three more of Ohio State, Tennessee, Oregon, Miami, or whoever in a row then that'll result in national championship. But being 8-3 and ranked 20th and saying "Wow! Look how much closer we are to a national championship than usual!" sounds like something of a self-own.

It's called a 12 team playoff, and it's a shame it took this long to do. It's good for college football.

It was a bit before my time but didn't we start off like 10-0 in 1975 and blow it the last game vs arky. at the time we were ranked i think number 2 in the nation had we won against arky i think we would have had a shot to play for a natty. we controlled our own destiny and lost i think 31-6? like i said a year or two before i was born but i think i had read this info before.

You COULD say that, but the truth is nobody had a chance that year because nobody was beating that Bama team.

Yep, I forget the reason, maybe TV since they only televised one game a week back then, but the sip game got moved up and we were so elated about beating the sips that we went out and laid a giant egg in Fayetteville the following week.

A lot of folks will argue, and with good reason, that that loss to Arkansas set us back tremendously as a program. Remember, this was just a few years after scholarship limits and integration in the south so had A&M beaten Arky and gone on to possibly win the national championship, we could have established ourselves as a marquee program in that new age of college football.

Instead, we lost and the program fell off resulting in the 40+ year cycle of firing a coach, hiring a new coach who shows signs of improvement early, but then ultimately falling short when the opportunity to break through arises, then the success starts to wane and we rinse and repeat.

kind of is, my main point was people being upset at this season. Which is ridiculous, because we have literally never been in this position before.

thanks for the additional details and i think you are right on why the game vs arky was the last game of the season.

This. A playoff wasn't needed that year since Bama was so much better than everyone else.

Disagree, Sherrill and RC were not in that group.

It's only been going on for about 20 years

For one, we are trying make it in to the top 12 teams. We are currently 20. If by some miracle, we win the next two games, we will be in a playoff with 12 teams. The disappointment lies in the fact that we are not currently in the top 12 teams, and will have to what looks like a pipe dream to do it. We are no closer to a natty now than in 2020 or any other year. Could it happen? I mean, sure, but don't make it seem like this staff and team has done something special when in reality, we have a favorable schedule and a new playoff.

It has nothing to do with our season. It has to do with the SEC's new tie breaker rules and the fact that 12 teams now make the playoffs. Without changes that have nothing to do with our play, the NC hopes were dramatically hit in the first game and completely dead after the Sout Carolina loss.

The good thing is that more teams have some NC possibility later in the season. The bad is that each regular season game is no longer as important and making the playoffs isn't that big of a deal anymore.

False. Ole Miss cancelled or if we won the chairman of the committee said we would have been in. In essence exact same position as now minus the ccg which is our only current path in and likely requires a win which gives us our first conf championship and the conferences first bye.

Yeah so once again we didn't control our own destiny because it was dependent on not only the committee but also Ole Miss.

I don't understand why we are arguing. We did not control our own destiny then, yet we do now, which is a great opportunity
