We deserved to lose the game tonight, but the OT rules are absolute garbage in college football. A game like this should not come down to alternating single plays from the three starting in the third OT. Overtime rules have always been flawed, but they were better prior to 2019. Does anyone think this is the correct way to determine the best team on the field?

Spare me the "but what about the potential injuries?!" response. These guys are paid well now, and if we truly didn't want them to possibly be injured we'd ban football and pay them to play chess.

It find it laughable that in an attempt to speed up the game they force the teams to march from one endzone to the other to run two plays, after running two plays

Don't know why, it's just comical.

couldnt agree more. college football OT had a long standing reputation of being perfect. they should have never changed. the 7OT game actually disproved the injury theory

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but how OT transpired tonight was pretty much EXACTLY what the rules committee wants IF it doesn't end in the first or second one. The theory is that if the teams haven't settled the game by the third or fourth OT, even one bad play call or missed pass is enough to settle the game as the teams are shown they are that even. At least for that game.

Its extremely hard to argue with that logic. The game is about who makes the plays to win; not necessarily who is the better team, which is difficult to know in virtually all circumstances a college football game would even go into OT. We may have been a better overall team than Auburn, but we suck on the road against inferior competition and have ended up in OT vs. Auburn and getting blown out vs. SoCar.

The OP being pissed that we lost is nowhere near a good enough reason to change the OT format. He needs to come up with a BETTER system that resolves both POTENTIAL injury issues (one game doesn't prove anything) as well as game time. I personally would remove the try (extra point) from the first OT and eliminate the kicking game (Field Goals/Scrimmage Kicks for 3 points) altogether in the second. But the third one on with 2-point plays isn't going anywhere nor should it.

The bottom line is that most OT games are going to end with one team performing and one team missing. We missed. Get pissed about that -- not the format. ANY NEW FORMAT IS GOING TO BRING AN AGGIE OT LOSS EVENTUALLY. What are you going to say then?

Increasingly distant pats is the better way.

Go back to original and let teams play like teams would play in a normal game.

2pt conversions are rare, bordering on never. Why the hell do you make that a part of your good games that go into overtime?

My dislike of the system is not based on the result tonight.

Possessions at the 25 was a good snapshot of football. You need to drive the ball a bit, play against goal line defense, potentially kick a field goal. The 2 point play is exactly what it's called: one play. It's a poor representation of the game that was played for the previous 60 minutes. Who's to say they don't just make it a field goal contest, or who can punt the ball further, etc.

Should be like a pk shootout. Best of five 2pt conversions ... That could/would be awesome

College football overtime is so stupid and it always has been. There's zero incentive for anybody to take any risk in overtime. That's an absurd construct to determine a hardly fought, tight game.

Read my first sentence. WE DESERVED TO LOSE THIS GAME. With the way we we were playing at the end of the fourth quarter and the first two overtimes, I don't think we would have or should have won with the old OT format or any improved format. The outcome of this game is irrelevant to this discussion, the current rules after the 2nd overtime are a crappy way to settle a game.

And if the rules committee believes that after two OT's we should say "**** it, these teams are equal today, let's get this over with", why don't we bring back tie games after two OT's?

If you can't beat the worst team in the league in 3 over times, just pack it in.

Might as well flip a coin. This 2 point conversion crap is meaningless. You could run it 20 times and flip flop the outcome.

But we ultimately deserved to lose by how we played so I guess it found the right outcome

Thought the same thing when it happened. OT rules are a joke and you have to just avoid it the best you can. It's not real football and doesn't prove much. Things like winning the toss can dictate a winner many times. Has nothing to do with our outcome last night, but it's just garbage. It's right there with the Manfred runner at second base in MLB.

Heck, just do the old high school overtime rule of penetration. Give each team the ball once and whoever has the most yards on one drive without turning the ball over on downs is given one point and wins.

During the 7OT game, the defenders were gassed. But the big difference would be timing of the game. The lsu game was the last game of the season whereas both teams from last night have games next week. These are human beings and not machines. We did not play to win on offense in the second overtime.

Alternate field goals moving back 5 yards at a time, just as fair

How about just go to the nfl rules, a 10 minute quarter, each team guaranteed 1 possession, if still tied at the end then do the alternating 2 point tries

Should be the same as it used to be, but start on the 50 yard line instead of the 25.

It would be just as dumb if they had a field goal overtime. Start at the 25 and kick. Next overtime go 5 yards back. Yes; stupid, but so is the OT rule currently.

It's not like our 7OT game with LSU was in any way the norm.

Meh, the rule is fine. You get a shot to make it and a shot to stop them. They made it and we dropped the ball.

Stop their QB from making a 30 yard run and we don't go to OT.

Every team plays by the same rule. Its fair. We lost because of 10 reasons that was capped by the dropped pass that should be caught 99% of the time.

TV plays a part too. If your games on ABC at 6:30 and it's the 2:30 game tthat goes to 7 OTs, they need to get onto the next game. Not everyone gets ESPN News. How pissed would we be if the sip game got pushed off ABC for the 1st quarter and you didn't have access.

Their receiver made a great catch. Our RB dropped his pass.
If it was reversed everything would be fine the way it is.

Seems we don't get many great catches since the 7 OT games.

Somewhat off topic re the 7 OT game: I've never understood why Jimbo allowed all seven OT's to be played in front of LSU's seats and band. I don't think he, nor any of his staff, knew the rules. It didn't, but could have ended up being disastrous.

It should be similar to soccer. Play a full quarter of regular football. If it's still tied, go to FGs starting at 30 yds and move back five yards until somebody misses.

That would create a paradox.

'Sip never gets bumped.

We always get bumped.
