The trend of overly-reactionary head coach contacts/extensions.

Anyone feel like the recent trend of extending coaches after brief success (not sustained success) is concerning and bad for the sport?
Indiana is undergoing negotiations to secure Curt Cignetti. This is his first year at Indiana, and while 9-0 is undoubtedly impressive, I think they're benefiting from an extremely weak schedule. What if things go south during year 2 or 3? They'll have locked themselves into a expensive contract.
Obviously Jimbo's extension after the 2020 season is a prime example of this, but it has been happening everywhere.
It doesn't feel good for the sport, universities, and fanbases.

Just cross your fingers that we have that crap out of our system.

Hell, not sure why it ever was in our system if we have the funds to buy out the very guy we raised and extended. If money isn't an issue, who cares if our coach goes elsewhere. It's not like there's only 1 coach that can work... plus we never seem to find that 1 anyway

It's going to be like this from now on (I mean unless there's some sort of global recession) because there's always going to be one school who wants to flop their uhh...wallet out on the table and do whatever they want. Expecting 130+ school ADs to all act rationally goes out the window with one ludicrous contract that becomes the new normal.

Perhaps we should award our undated NC trophy to the school who does this in the most bizarre way every season.

The extra $21 million in NIL payments annually will impinge on salaries going up as it should have two decades ago

Yep

And a school like Indiana, tasting this kind of success for the first time, maybe ever, does t want to lose the coach that got them there and they know bigger programs will try to poach him

There's too much money involved in the sport now to lose a winning coach

Winnest season ever for Indiana, right? I mean historical. And season isn't even over. Something close to that....too lazy to google it.

Sorry gals but I would also sign the HC to a longer term deal, too. Lived in misery their entire football lives.

As more and more coaches struggle to maintain success when switching from one big program to the next, I think contract negotiations will level off. It is appropriate to give a significant raise to a coach moving from a small program to a power 2 job (plus the handful of decent schools not yet in the power 2). But how many example do we have of lateral moves that worked out in recent years?

As more and more lateral moves flame out (of which we are proof) I believe there will be less and less competition to steal those coaches, reducing the urgency to hurry up and extend them. Here's hoping t.u. Baseball is the next case study.

Kirk Cignetti is an assassin. We are talking about Indiana football, who was winning two or three games a year against a similar caliber schedule. If he regresses… it's not as if there are a bunch of better options waiting in line to go coach Indiana

MANY folks in State College PA are regretting the bazillion dollar 29 year extension they gave James 'unbeatable against unranked teams' Franklin. Wish they would fire him for incompetence.

There's a high market rate for coaches who have had any kind of success. It's not like these extensions are done in a vacuum, they're done to try to keep coaches from getting hired away. If Indiana doesn't try to keep him, he's likely to get snagged in the off-season.

Elko was turning heads after a 9-4 season at Duke, how much pull do you think Cignetti has after what's currently 9-0 at Indiana? It'll be tough for Indiana to keep him for even one more year at this rate.

Cignetti is going to leave with or without an extension

so don't give him one

It's harder to leave with an extension. Crazy not to give him one.
