Listen, I know where we are at.

I know that we are performing much better than we have been in the last 5 years.

But, I also know what we all want us to be. In all reality, it feels like we have been treading water for the last few weeks. (almost like we cannot believe that we are where we are)

It is nice to believe that we are contenders for the national championship, but that is nowhere near the case. National championship teams have receivers that create separation. National Championship teams know who the F is their starting quarterback without a doubt. Everyone reading this knows deep in their heart that for the last couple of weeks, whenever our quarterback has underperformed, you thought "Put ___ in to shake things up!" That uncertainty is not the recipe for a national championship.

Elko has done a phenomenal job turning our culture around. But, for a defensive guy, how have we not engrained the most basic concept of defense being... wrap up? How are we not adjusting to the fact that our defensive line is getting in the backfield and they are dumping it right under our noses for easy gains? Was this not a problem week 1? Was this not a problem last week against LSU before we got the momentum back by surprising them with Reed? Today most of all?

By no means do I want anyone to take this post as being anti-Elko. I feel blessed to root for a team he is the head coach of, but there seems to be much bigger issues all around than what we had thought

Why were we so quick to make the change to Marcel when the pass wasn't working last week, but so reluctant to try something new today.

Yeah, you're right. Every other year we sit 5-1 in conference at this point in the season with our destiny in our own hands. Just same old same old.

I agree with you.

Below is from "Aggie" on another post that I thought was good.

"This team is a product of the schedule

We have played 1 team in the top half of the SEC standings.
LSU by far the best win.. after that our best win is against a 5-4 Arkansas team
And LSU is a 7-4 team"

Yeah, we skimped by a team that got utterly demolished by ole miss today.

I still like the overall direction that Elko has set. A&M probably got a little lucky in the previous game matchups and everybody overreacted and said we arrived. We are clearly not there yet. The offense has been suspect all year. I'm disappointed in the defense. Letting an unranked team score 44 points should be unacceptable. A one or two score loss is understandable in year one but not a 4 scores loss. I don't know how Elko can explain it. Complete abject failure.

We have two one dimensional quarterbacks. One can run and pass a little. The other can pass and run very little. Both are recipes for defeat against great teams.

That's a polite way of saying the OLine is still a flaming bag of dog ****, otherwise that better passer would have time to pass and that better runner could add an extra dimension to the scheme

The question on my mind now is can Elko build on this. Can he recruit the talent needed to compete with the better teams in the SEC. We need a better QB and better receivers. Hopefully this doesn't turn out to be Elko's most talented team and talent level drops off due to lackluster recruiting.

Man, even reading my own post. QB uncertainty is "not the recipe for a national championship," and then ending it with "why were we so quick to put Marcel in.... but not willing to try something new today."

This team really does have me in the washing machine.

Obviously I don't know the answers, but I can see glaring issues with my own eyes.

More like we have zero WRs or TEs that can create seperation and command the defense's attention. Doesn't matter who we have at QB if they have no one competent to throw to.

I feel very much different from you.

1., defense, OL, DL are very much playoff caliber. RB with Moss is.

2. LB and WR are our 2 biggest holes. TE is right there too

3. Reed is good enough to get us to playoffs this year and has a very high ceiling for future years.

4. Schedule helps but what team outside of Georgia plays a tougher schedule to date and is still in the conversation? Who has Texas beat. Their best win might be a 6-6 team at year end. Who has Ole Miss beaten?

5. This team is extremely talented and mature I have been telling people 2024 will be out best team in 20 years.

We are here. We should have a great chance to play Texas for right to go to SEC Championship game. What more are you asking for to prove we are a playoff caliber team.

By the way, what team in the SEC are you confident is a championship caliber team? Have they had moments that give you reason to question. Like Georgia over Kentucky 1312? What about Georgia/Florida game? Texas? Ole Miss? Bama?

Elko hasn't done any kind of amazing turnaround this year, but it's nice we don't **** ourselves every road game (last night notwithstanding) and culture does seem better. I'd say he's gotten the program back to about what its floor should be given the talent accumulated. It's amazing how far below that level Jimbo had been operating at.

This team is definitely the product of what is probably the weakest sec schedule anyone has ever had lol.

One decent win against a solid, not great, LSU team and if we are honest we probably lose that game by 10 points if it's anywhere but Kyle Field.

Anyone who saw the conference schedule should have expected a pretty decent season unless Elko completely **** the bed. Thankfully he hasn't.

But it doesn't tell us much beyond the fact that we've benefited greatly from a weak schedule.

Definitely not anywhere near being a playoff caliber team and that's ok. Elko has done a solid job and shown there's hope for the future despite Saturdays performance.

What are the benchmark issues that mark a change?

  • Beat ranked opponents at home: progress being made (ND game: a win if game four w/Reed and not game one w/Weigman)
  • Beat ranked opponents on the road: jury still out, haven't played one yet.
  • Beat unranked opponents handily at home, e.g. covering a significant spread: not yet.
  • Beat unranked opponents on the road as a favorite: suffered a setback.
  • Win bowl games: jury hasn't yet convened.
  • Doing all these things over multiple years: TBD

Obviously those aren't in order, but we get the gist.

I clipped the above from your post. These are the things that apply to every college football team with an enthusiastic fan base.

Just lighten up and enjoy the season. The Aggies are 7-2 and will be tied for first place in the conference on Nov 22nd.

Enjoy the great job Elko is doing. For God's sake, it's year one for him.

Agree with above - -this is year freaking 1 with Elko. These shaky offensive performances are due to the fact that these kids have had less than a calendar year to work in this system - -that matters..

That matters 100% -- please stop pretending that we should go out and dominate everyone - in the SEC that never happens..

Go look at every single Championship team and see their schedules, you will see ugly ass wins and maybe a stupid loss -- it happens.

12 team playoff opens possibilities that we can enjoy - we control our own destiny in these last 3 games like we never have before.

stop the whining and enjoy the season - if we win the next 3 games, this loss to SC doesnt really mean anything. Lets hope the boys learn from it - grow from it and move on

Who the heck thought we were going to win a national championship this year?

I haven't seen one person saying that

I predicted 10-2 before the season because I'm a believer in Elko and the schedule set up nicely

We are still on track for that

Do we have issues?

Absolutely

But at this point we've done better than most would have thought

One Game at a time

Flawed team or not it's all still right in front of us and we control what happens to
Us, and it's been over 25 years that we've been in that position this late in the season

Team essentially has 3 weeks to get right before Auburn

Win that one and it's the biggest game at Kyle in most of our lifetimes

Couldn't agree more. Expectations need to be set at the beginning of the season - not every week. and definitely after you beat a rival at home in an electric environment. All of a sudden you think your going to win a title?!

I think almost everyone of us would have taken 7-2 after 9. Just because we exceeded expectations after game 8 doesn't mean a loss should push us back to the basement.

While it would have been nice to go 11-1 in year 1, that was never realistic. Name a first year coach that has done that, other than Urban Meyer at OSU? I'll wait...

Fact is, we have everything in front of us still, despite a soul crushing loss. We have 3 games left to right the ship and get to 10/11 wins for the year. Again we would have all taken it in August.

Now, if he wets the bed down the stretch here with NMS and Auburn, that is a different story.

Yep. I'll never understand how many of our "fans" go out of their way to jump through hoops to talk down the Ags while giving all the other teams a pass for the exact same issues. It's truly wild.

We were losing to LSU by a pretty good margain until we pulled our starting quarterback and they didn't have an answer for that luckily. Missou seems to be fairly fraudulent. Barely squeaked past Arkansas who just got obliterated by Ole miss. Beat bowling green by 6 points. Losing these games would be considered sinking. Winning them in the fashion we did seems like treading water.

I will admit, I wrote this post right after the loss with emotion. After taking a step back I know that a lot of what I said seems to be harsh for where we are (sitting tied for the lead in the SEC) but I am just ready to cross the hump of being good to being great. I know we are on our way there.

Be honest. If we played the same conference schedule as years past, we wouldn't be. We probably lose to Alabama, Ole Miss, SC. Depending on who we get as the other east conference foes, could be Tenn, GA, and we might struggle against Vandy. We aren't much different from the team we had last year. Pretty good defense, but not very good on offense.

This is probably reality. Deal with it.

But great that we still literally control our CFP hopes. Usually not the case and why Elko is our man moving forward.

I ultimately am 100% content with this season if it ended today. This is still Jimbo's team more than Elko.
