Weigman's massive reverse splits (clean pocket, pressure)

81 PFF Grade under pressure: this is actually elite

56.4 PFF Grade when kept clean: this is bad

The baffling thing is that almost all QB's are better in a clean pocket, Weigman is +25 under pressure which is a unicorn. No one else is close in that kind of reverse split.

Too much time and he gets that stare down

So we should have our LT lay down after the snap so Conner feels the heat.
Boom! Touchdown play!

It seems like he struggles with the middle ground:

Truly clean pocket: good passer
Flushed from the pocket: good passer
Pocket gets a little tight but room to step up into it: bad passer.

When he is torn between bailing or passing, he makes bad throws. He backs himself into the edge rushers lane instead of pressing forward.

The last two years he has learned to thrive under pressure because that is all he has experienced due to poor OL play. He is still in the learning process on working with a clean pocket. Here is to continued improvement when the OL protects him. I like the upside going forward.

Crazy thing is we're averaging 1 sack given up per game. It's not like there's a ton of duress

I mean that's when we all thought he was the second coming of Johnny

Conner has proven to be inconsistent.

Crazy stat.

Give me a clean pocket and I'll toss the ball to the other team /Conner

If Conner learns when to run, he will really open up his game.

I think it's because of receivers being more open when pressure brings defenders out of coverage.

With more coverage our reveivers struggle to get separation it seems.

It's the David Carr affect.

If there's known pressure, he knows what to expect and acts accordingly.

If there's not, he's uncomfortable not knowing where it is.

I am also assuming this is lifetime.

Because I'm pretty sure that wasn't the case for Mizzou.

I wonder how much of this is he struggles seeing the field when teams drop back and play coverage. He did this vs MSST where he just didn't see the defender after he was locked on to a receiver and threw a few turnover worthy passes from a clean pocket.

But defenses have to respect our run game as long as we are not in obvious passing situations. An interesting stat for sure.

What it tells you is that the stat needs a much larger sample size to actually tell you anything.

Dude's a shortstop. When they have too much time, their muscle memory gets the yips.

So there are some "shortcuts" a QB can take when they are being blitzed, like "Throw toward the pressure." I wonder if Weigman is just really good at relying on those shortcuts, but is less good at fundamental real-time decision-making?

Roll him out to make him mentally believe that there is pressure?

Would be interested in seeing how the data splits.

Could it just be small sample sizes and the teams that didn't pressure him had much more athletic/talented defensive backfields? Meanwhile, would we expect more heavy blitzes to come from teams that felt they were outmanned, so just trying to force bad decisions.

Weigman is very good against blitzes and against zone. Those are situations where the read is straight forward. At times he has struggled vs man with safeties over the top. The issue there is we haven't had one receiver consistently beat man coverage. Someone will usually break open but it's not predictable. Most "elite" quarterbacks have a receiver that prevents you from being able to run man because they will beat the vast majority of corners.

When we motion someone at the line it tells us man vs zone. If Weigman sees zone he knows what his hot read is for a blitz and he knows his checks if not. If he sees man with safeties back then he has to determine who is most likely to beat his man one on one. This can lead to staring down the receiver. He knows who is most likely to get open but if they're not then you have to find the next guy.

That's a really odd stat. I dunno if I've even heard of something like that.

I'm surprised by that stat since he played his best game vs mizzou and it didn't seem like they got much pressure on him, Unless I'm remembering wrong
