Overreaction or not that we had no sacks and only 3 TFLs against McNeese?? Seems like with all the talent we have on the D-line we should see more in these stat lines.

You don't blitz when you are playing a cupcake.

You practice your coverages and contain so you don't give up any big plays and so you don't get your own guys hurt doing crazy stuff, While letting ur offense work and get the reps they need.

I am betting they didn't run alot of stunts and various blitz packages but ran a basic defense most of the game focusing on maintaining coverage and maintaining control of the line of scrimmage, not looking to penetrate it.

You also don't want to give your opponents more film of your tendencies and more intricate blitz/coverage packages than you have to.

You treat it like a scrimmage. Which is what the defense did.

Don't worry, NIU has more sacks against ND than we do all season.

#75 did an amazing job preventing a bunch of sacks by holding

How many shots down field did they take? Neither ND or McNeese really took shots.

For good reason

Georgia has 3 sacks and 9 TFL's so far

I hope you folks with more football knowledge than me are right. I expected to see our DL "blow up" more plays than we did, although there was many a time there was contact with RBs in the backfield.

You shouldn't have to blitz to get at least 2 or 3 sacks against a team that got handled by Tarleton and blown out by Baylor.

Exactly, the talent mismatch alone should mean more than that in the regular course of a game.

He went 9/19 for 80 yards 1 TD and 2 INTs

Because he was being harassed and had pressure. You can't make accurate passes when you have little time. I don't recall him ever throwing the ball down field other than garbage time/late 4th qtr

Give these guys credit. Our d-line isn't the issue

It's sad and pathetic how some Ags are defending the mediocre start to our season. Nothing you said makes sense. We had ZERO sacks against what might be the softest team on the schedule. We should have had multiple sacks and pitched a shut out.

Agree with this concern. I thought our two DEs, Scourton and Stewart, would be wreaking havoc in the opponent's offendive backfield this season. So far, no signs of getting serious pressure on the QB.

We were up 35-0 with all starters. Our defense did its job, and the bonus is, we haven't given Florida a scouting report.

True. But we need to improve the pass rush dramatically. We have the B10 sack leader a massive talent advantage against McNeese. And I reject the notion that we are just being basic. Sure wrinkles will be added during the season but we're not trying to conceal a bunch to surprise teams after we're 3-3 and if we are Elko isn't a very good coach.

I'm currently looking at the drive sheet.

So far, the only DEEP pass attempt by McNeese St in the first half was the VERY First play of the game.

One of the INTs was a hurried pass

Lol

Everything they did in the first half was little run plays amd short pass attempts which they struggled completing because they were under pressure. Holding calls too

Also

7 pass attempts total in the first half by McNeese. 1 was an INT

They came out in the 2nd half and their first pass was an INT

It's not easy to get sacks when all they essentially did was run the ball, and rum short passing plays. They didn't come to Kyle Field to win the game and it was evident. They continued to run the ball while down a bunch of points and never ran deep pass plays.

They came to get paid and leave healthy which they did.

The weakness of the A&M team as of now is Weigman and the receivers. Both of that could change

We had a play that should have been a sack that ended up being a half yard gain that we declined a holding call on in the second quarter.

This. The McNeese QB was constantly under pressure against a defense that was only rushing 3/4 while throwing quick passes. McNeese is a run first offense and the defense never tried to get sacks.

ND did the same last week, all they did was quick slants and lateral passes to get away from pressure. I don't think Leonard ever held the ball longer than a second except when he was scrambling/running.

The D-line is fine.

LBs are an issue…very inconsistent, poor tackling, over-running plays and misfitting runs or leverage (consistently bad).

McNeese had 3 big bounce outside runs (its was almost all of their offensive yards) due to LB not scraping outside or DE not setting the edge. It's the first thing learned in youth football…set the edge and force runs inside into traffic.

#75 was called for holding on what was about to be a sack. He was called for holding twice I believe but held more than that. They weren't going to give our defense the opportunity by throwing 2-4 yard passes and running the ball as much as they did

Surly I'm not the only one who caught on to this?

Teams are going to game plan to get the ball out fast against us. Sure, I'd like to get sacks instead of not getting them, but good lord our ones gave up zero points and dominated the game. Move on.

2 interceptions, one of which would have been a sack if the QB hadnt basically helicoptered teh ball in the air after being hit

I think the problem might be that all of this talent you speak of was a fantasy. Not as much of a fantasy as our QB being the best in the SEC, but close.

Our Dline better pressure Lagway next week and put him on the turf. We need our studs up front to start dominating their opponent. No more excuses of how the other team is scheming to avoid sacks. That's a bunch of crap. ND came into Kyle Field with an Oline that had 6 total starts and we didn't get to the QB with our stellar Dline Great players dominate their opposition regardless of the scheme.

I am fine with the D. I think Elko knows what he is doing.

As folks here said, you don't bring out your finest stuff against a cupcake. You just do enough to ensure a good result and try out different things in a no pressure environment.

So The Elk and the Aggies did just fine on D. As far as the O, I am not as sure.

We impacted the QB/backfield for most of that game. Just didn't show up on the stat sheet.
