Looks like my fall schedule will have a lot more time now... Can't believe that DirectTV is fighting with ESPN/Disney at the start of football season!

ESPN/Disney want an insane amount of money (probably because they pay insane amounts for the rights to college and pro sports). If the DirectTV and others just give in to the high prices, then everyone will just pay more for their cable/satellite/streaming. People NEED to start pushing back against the high prices.

How about they stop packaging bs channels with every package and cheapen it. I dont care about the alien nation channel, the anger management channel, the are we there yet? Channel… and yes these are all channels on my choice package directv stream. Cancelled my service, they wont refund my money for this month. Never going back to directv again. Hope they go out of business after this.

Those packages exist because companies like Disney demand that their channels are packaged. DirectTV/AT&T has been pretty clear for a while that they want per-channel choice, because that's the only way they'll stay competitive with streaming in the long run.

ESPN/Disney is the common denominator in all these disputes and have been for a long time. The customer though has always dealt with and mostly blamed the carrier. The Disney/ESPN channels are the most expensive, and most the time, they require the carrier to not only take ESPN2, but Disney, Freeform, etc.

For those who are excited to cut the cord and look forward to ESPN as a stand-alone service, after they launch their stand-alone service, just know that the price will eventually double, and instead of Directv, Dish, Comcast/Xfinity doing the negotiations, you will get the choice to either accept it or take the price increase.

Then you can look forward to paying for multiple services to catch the games. Then there will be bundles, and then multiple bundles will be needed.

Then we will have threads reminiscing how much simpler cable/sat was.

This is not true. I have YTTV and have never been caught in the middle of a dispute. Not saying it will never happen but this is like a yearly occurrence for cable and DTV. These are two companies that are spiraling down the drain. If there was real choice in most markets they would already be out of business.

I called the loyalty department, 800-347-3288, said cancel on the voice prompt.

Explained tp rep only reason I have Directv is for ESPN/SEC and recevived a gift card offer from Dish for $500 to switch(true) and streaming options cheaper.

Rep stated will send a $200 Visa gift card if I continue service for next 60 days plus the $20 credit on top of that. I have had Directv for 12+ years so YMMV.

YTTV had a dispute with ESPN and DIsney in 2021. And then raised their prices again. HULU+Live sports probably hasn't since they basically are Disney so they just keep raising prices.

YTTV is not a stand-alone service, but basically functions the same as cable or sat except through the Internet instead of cord. They started at about $35 month, gradually increasing to $65, and now are over $70 + taxes/fees. Just like cable, it keeps going up. That is what is going to happen when ESPN is launched.

People have had a choice since the mid-90s when choosing between cable or sat, and now many people have a choice between those services and any of the Internet provided television delivery services. Any market that has internet has a choice to not use cable or sat.

Umm...are all these replies serious? Texags really needs to sticky at the top of the page a thread, or post some sort of public announcement in all of the sports boards, about what espn+ actually gets you (which is crap...soccer, rugby, intramural, ping pong, etc) and what it doesnt get you (all sports that Americans actually want to watch, with the one exception being college baseball). The fact that these posts are still seriously made is pretty impressive, especially by more than one poster on a thread. Unless everyone is joking about it, which is acceptable.
I watched several games (including USC-LSU) using the ESPN app and my ESPN+ account. There were dozens and dozens of college football games available.

I find it hilarious that people will pay $400 for a ticket in the upper Zone to sit in the heat and have crazy expensive bad food but will complain about a $20 increase in service provider costs.

Do you only have espn+? Or also a tv service that includes abc/espn? I assume the latter, as that game was on a network channel. Correct me if I'm wrong in this particular instance, but perhaps they made an exception because it was the first weekend. I was also able to watch this game on the ESPN app, but do not subscribe to espn+ and directv stream cut those channels (as per the topic of this discussion), so I wouldn't be surprised if they allowed this particular game to be shown on there even if not a subscriber.

Also, every team has to have at least one game on espn+ per season that isn't on a regular abc-based tv channel. These are usually crap games, but there are always some games in an attempt to force people to subscribe to that service, you are correct, and that's why they make each team have a game that's only on there. I assume that's what you're referring to, as the remaining games from big programs like the SEC are all on one of the main abc/espn channels, which are also on espn+ (or just the regular espn app using the tv service credentials. There are probably exceptions for smaller programs, or ones in crap conferences, but for our games, you cannot watch on there without a tv service to log into on the app, aside from that one game per season I referred to above.

Called and the only thing they offered was the $20 credit so I went ahead and cancelled. Going to give Youtube TV a try I guess.

Never mind...guess FUBO is the best option because they also have Space City Home Network.

I called and canceled also after that paltry $20 offer.

I am looking at all options...FUBO, Sling, YouTube TV and Hulu Live TV and appreciate any, and all, comments.

Cant speak for right at this moment, but... I had Hulu with Live TV a few years ago and the UI was terrible, especially pause and replay for sports!

I switched to YouTube TV.

SEC football is the only reason I have YouTube TV.

Going to be funny when the ratings come out and 11 million less people have been watching. Any money they squeeze out of Direct TV will likely be lost in future ad revenue. Corporate myopia at its finest.

We switched to YouTube tv last year, I'm a football junkie on the weekends and they have the Sunday ticket now.

No complaints with it so far.

It won't very anywhere near 11mm.

ESPN makes over twice was much on carriage fees as it does on advertising. I think they know what they are doing and the "loss of future ad revenue" will be minimal, if any

Here's the thing. DirecTV has 11M total subscribers.

On a good day, maybe 10% of those would be watching a particular football game.

Meanwhile, all the big games pulled 8M+ viewers.

The math, as always, has been done before the plug was pulled.

That seems like ESPN will be the bigger loser then, not Direct. They lose 10 million sub fees and Direct loses 1 million subscribers. Or maybe its a wash.

Without cable - and streamers like YouTube TV - paying ESPN for lots of subs where most people don't care about it, ESPN is screwed.

I don't think Disney/ESPN really lose too much in the end. Folks who really want their coverage will switch to a different provider who has it (FUBO, YTTV, Hulu+, traditional cable), same as the people on here are looking into.

It's not a net zero, but I'm sure they use it in their calculations when negotiating.

Another vote for YouTube TV. Had Hulu and switched because Hulu is fussy when you travel / switch locations.
