Saw him play numerous times when I was a kid and dad took me to Aggie games.

It is good to hear that he found God while in prison. Sounds like he was very sincere in his faith and wanted to help others not make the same mistakes he did.
"If you will not fight for right when you can easily win without blood shed; if you will not fight when your victory is sure and not too costly; you may come to the moment when you will have to fight with all the odds against you and only a precarious chance of survival. There may even be a worse case. You may have to fight when there is no hope of victory, because it is better to perish than to live as slaves." - Sir Winston Churchill

My favorite Aggie football player of all time. Had a long conversation with him as we both waited at the Quack Shack his last semester at A&M. Nice guy and great running back.

I'd like to give a shout out to Been There for staying in touch with his former players. Good man.

Edit - the thumbs up for coach Slocum. You know what I mean.

RIP Darren. In my opinion, he was the best RB ever to play for us

From reading the ESPN story on Lewis, it sounds like he found peace with God as a believer in Jesus Christ. If so, he's in a great place now with no addictions or struggles.

He had it all including great blockers in front of him.

I even saw throw a halfback TD pass in the cotton bowl.

They called him The Tank

Oh yeah he had that halfback pass down cold. Think I read somewhere where he attempted 7 in his A&M career. Completed all 7.

Damn, condolences to his loved ones. I was a student at the same time he was and watched him play on many a Saturday.

I remember wondering what we were gonna do after Lewis, Randy Simmons, and Robert Wilson were gone. Then Greg Hill, Rodney Thomas (also RIP), and Leland McElroy showed up. Holeeee.

Before them, it was Roger Vick, Anthony Toney, and Keith Woodside. After them it was Dante Hall, Sirr Parker, and Tiki Hardeman.

But Tank was the best of them all.
94chem,
That, sir, was the greatest post in the history of TexAgs. I salute you. -- Dough

Lewis put A&M on the map in the 80s. Without him, there would've never been a Hill, Thomas or a lot of the top RBs that followed into the 90s

No A&M RB is the equal of 25 on the field. One of the most amazing football players to ever represent this university. He was a true talent and a warrior.
