Question - what was the cash only steak house in Somerville that was in an old house in the 80s/90s. Great steak if you could get in and they only took cash.

Biggest portions I've ever seen…

Edit: I might be thinking of the place in Snook…

Wasn't it just called the Somerville Inn?

I remember trying to finish the big broiled steak and falling into a coma on the ride back to campus.

I think so. I remember the steaks being so big they hung over the edge of the plate, your sides had to be put on a separate dish…

Looks like it was the "Country Inn." Can't find an exact address, just that it was Hwy 36 in Somerville.

Sodalak's "country inn" in Snook was a different place, though I liked that too.

3C Barbecue, their chicken fried steak was outstanding especially with the white cream gravy and hand-cut fries.

Cow Hop, cow pie w/ mushrooms and fries.

My gosh, those really were the glory days in Aggieland!!!

Maybe it was Snook - I kept thinking it was closer to Lake Somerville.

THIS is the one I'm thinking of - Country Inn. Awesome (and relatively inexpensive) steaks, a line to get in, & cash only.

Cain Hall

Steaks every week in the fall.

That Oreo pie was crazy good.

Holiday meals were top notch.

La Taqueria was my favorite.

Then I will say and not in particular order but…..The Chicken (Death Burger), Deluxe Burger ( Pecan Waffles), Doyble Dave's ( Pizza Rolls and all you can eat buffet), Cow Hop (Traditions, mushroom burgers), Grandy's (Chucken Fried Steak), Mom's (Family style), Fast Food Chinese(Any $5 meal), Brothers ( Hot Italian Ham), Toms BBQ, Fatboy's Burgers.

I bet there are a few more places but those were my main choices.

My friends would pay me to come eat there on Sunday's. Thursday night was steak night, free Blue Bell as well as machine. Breakfast was always great as well.

Fajita Rita's was great, all you can eat for $7.99, girlfriend worked there for a while. Things changed when the owner blew up Graham's.

I thought Chicken Oil was overrated, never did much for me. Came to The Chicken burgers later in life, not bad.

Lived in Cain for 2 years in C wing, with most of the football players. My roomie had a class w/a guy who worked at DD's. They locked down Cain at 10:30 on Friday's, if you weren't there & non-scholly like me, you had to find somewhere to sleep.

Country, as he was called, would knock on our 1st floor window & we'd get a pizza or 2. And the trainers coming by for room check would have "beverages" in our snack bag for us.

La Taqueria

Yeah, I'm old. Best fajitas ever imo. That's when we used to get outside skirt steak in the US. Now Japan imports most of it.

I was at A&M from 85-90 and La Taq was our go to hangover meal.

I'm gonna show some age here...

Cow Hop - CFS sandwich with gravy & Fries
La Taqueria - Saturday breakfast steak & eggs, queso, and fajitas all other times.
Wings & Things (Before Wings & More)
Mom's - Thursday enchilada night.
Tom's - Brisket, cheese & pickles with a steak knife (no fork)
Subway - Opened next to Krogers on Texas in 1990, and a footlong Club was about tree-fiddy.

Any of you all remember The Wing Joint that was on Northgate, circa 1986/87'? Those were the best wings I have ever had and the place was open before the popularity of wings drove the prices way up. Their fries were exceptional too.

Tino, the owner, was a Mexican Aggie that was on the lam from PEMEX and so he opened that place up and restaurant in Normangee. We got to know him really well, and he would buy beer for my roommates and deliver it.

Those were different times. He closed up in late 87' or so to focus on his handicapped daughter and his place in Normangee, but his wings and food were really good.

Sounds like we had similar experiences in Cain

I learned quickly if you had alcohol make sure no one found out. Had a case of zima once. Football player after football player kept knocking on more door until I ran out.
