Bold move by the nfl to give the college playoff the finger.
Nothing bold. Been discussed previously. NFL owes the rump child CFP committee no thing.

The NFL murders everything in ratings. If you are thinking college games will win in the ratings because they are playoff games, I would temper your expectations. Texags does not love the NFL, but America as a whole does.

America as a whole is ignorant. The NFL sucks. College football is way more entertaining, though NIL and the transfer portal are making it trend the direction of the NFL.

Now that every college team basically runs the same offense and players bounce around yearly it is largely uninteresting. Then throw in players getting paid like pros when most are spares and 1 year NFL practice squad players at best.

College football was at its most fun when you have teams with dramatically different styles and philosophies. It is largely all homogenized now.

I am not surprised that the two NFL Games on NBC and Fox crushed the two CFP games on TNT/Max in TV ratings battle. Both NFL games had playoff implications between teams that were 9-5 or better.

Last years Cotton Bowl (with Ohio State) had less than 10 million viewers.

https://www.cottonbowl.com/news/2024/1/10/espn-delivers-record-viewership-across-2023-24-new-years-six-college-football-playoff-games.aspx#:~:text=The%202023%2D24%20New%20Year's,%25%20year%2Dover%2Dyear.

These games aren't even NYD games. CF absolutely crushed their prior ratings for nobody bowls with the expanded playoffs, going up against the NFL no less.

The fact the non-competitive games put up close to NFL numbers in the evening games is even more of a victory for the CFP. These are dancing in the rain, yes!, creating $$ from previously nothing numbers.

With the NYD playoff games to come. 11 playoff games to 3 previously. Slam dunk success for college football.

I'm sure this has been posted on the thread but the NFL has been playing games on Saturday since the 1950's.

There is a federal law, the Sports Broadcasting Act of 1961, that prohibits the NFL from televising games within a certain vicinity of live high school or college games, so as not to diminish potential attendance at the latter events. Because most high school and college schedules have winded down, there is more flexibility on the NFL's part. That's why Saturday NFL games usually start in Week 15 around mid-December. Because of the Army-Navy game on December 15th, Saturday games will be on Week 16-18 this year.

College football is fighting an uphill battle against the NFL for TV viewership. The NFL has completely taken over Thanksgiving day. It owns Monday night since the beginning. Thursday night has become a two game NFL night. Only college programs desperate for attention will agree to go up against the NFL on Thursday evenings. The 3 dog first round 12 team playoff matchups didn't entrench the college playoffs in the minds of the casual football fans. In fact it turned a lot of potential
Fans off, by the selections and the piss poor play.

This week the nfl is solidifying its wildcard spots in their playoff system, while college football is trying save the decaying bowl system amid opts outs and portal transfers in order to to keep its product out there to promote the 2nd round of the CFP.

It's surprising to say but I am more interested in what the matchups are in the NFL to challenge the chiefs, Bills, Ravens, packers, Vikings than I am the CFP.

Somehow college football has totally crapped the bed with conference realignment, NIL, and portal transfers of disgruntled players looking for more visibility and those just looking for a payday. College football's plan of whoaring themselves out to the almighty media dollar is showing signs of cracking under the weight of its own arrogance. There are more costs involved than revenue to support it for many college football programs, than the powers that be realize. More and more programs won't be able to keep up. So what's next? Screw it up even further to try and save it from itself? .

The numbers were a huge success for the CFP, with the NYD and NYE playoff games poised to almost certainly have higher ratings.

https://sports.yahoo.com/nfl-continues-ratings-domination-with-big-saturday-showing-cfp-first-round-delivers-strong-numbers-200853439.html

Quote:

. . . Despite going head-to-head with two NFL games and the results ending up in blowouts, the CFP numbers in context were very good. Across the board, the four games averaged 10.6 million viewers with Tennessee-Ohio State and Indiana-Notre Dame delivering two of the three largest audiences of the season for college football.

Clemson-Texas and SMU-Penn State were the two most-watched college football games that aired exclusively on cable this season.

They limited it to December and January back in 1972.

The 2024 NFC North is going to send a 13-win wild card team to the playoffs. Since realignment in 2002, no wild card team has won more than 12 games. Only once since the AFL-NFL merger has a wild card team won 13 games, and that was the 1999 Titans.

https://www.reddit.com/r/nfl/comments/1hkbs9i/the_2024_nfc_north_is_going_to_send_a_13win_wild/

With wins on Sunday, the Lions and Vikings became the first teams in the same division to each win at least 13 games in the same season since 1999 (Jags 14-2 and Titans 13-3).

The NFL has never had two teams in the same division each win at least 14 games in the same season. We might be witnessing history and it's great that it's happening in the NFC North.

If the 11-4 Packers win their last 2 games against the Vikings (away) and Bears (home), the NFC North would have 3 teams win 13+ games.

Anyone who questions the dominance of NFL in terms of sports isn't looking at the facts.

The Baltimore Ravens' 31-2 victory over the Houston Texans averaged 24.3 million, and the Kansas City Chiefs' 29-10 win at the Pittsburgh Steelers averaged 24.1 million

The NBA's five-game slate averaged about 5.25 million viewers per game

NFL was 5x the NBA. There is a reason LeBron is crying about the NFL schedule.
