Got a little spare time ... Read up on how & what happened when Trev Alberts was AD @ University of Nebraska at Omaha. Interesting reading especially how he responded/treated the Wrestling Coach/team.

Sure hope nothing like that happens here....

Since you don't usually post on F16, here is a useful piece of advice.

You need to provide a lot more context for your thread, not just a vague comment and telling people to look it up.

A link that explains whatever incident(s) you're talking about would be best.
"If you will not fight for right when you can easily win without blood shed; if you will not fight when your victory is sure and not too costly; you may come to the moment when you will have to fight with all the odds against you and only a precarious chance of survival. There may even be a worse case. You may have to fight when there is no hope of victory, because it is better to perish than to live as slaves." - Sir Winston Churchill

Dude was hired to nuke the football and wrestling teams and did just that.

He's done a pretty great job and Nebraska.

So two years later, Alberts and UNO's administration had identified a bold new plan: move to Division 1 and the Summit League. There were two problems with that: the Summit League didn't sponsor football, hockey, or wrestling, and UNO only fielded teams in three of the eight men's Summit League sports. While the Summit League offered UNO a stable path to ensure the viability of the rest of the program, UNO had to make tough decisions on those three non-Summit programs as well as find a way to add men's golf and soccer, so that the new school would compete in a majority of the new league's sports.

Football was another matter entirely; it was a money loser that was going to require even more resources to upgrade to division 1-AA. In 2010, UNO had only made just over $100,000 in football ticket revenue contributing to a $1.4 million budget for the sport according to the World-Herald. Sadly, Alberts knew the football program just couldn't continue.

Based on how we've performed, would it matter?

There has been two times this week Billy Liucci has mentioned the future of the Athletic Department and potentially cutting programs. Once on TexAgs Radio, once on Paul Finebaum Show in Nashville last week.

I just listened to Trev Alberts first press conference as AD; he is absolutely going to consider cutting sports to adjust for "new budgets" that the athletic dept is going to have to address on a yearly basis. Essentially that would be paying athletes.

Alberts said there are two ways to address these new expenses, increased revenue, and cutting costs. Get ready, the next 5 years in our athletic dept and across college athletics is going to see a lot of change.

Smaller schools like UNO should not have a football team. They have basically no chance to compete against the big boys. It's also not just the direct cost of the football team but the cost of additional non-revenue women's sports to offset the 85 scholarships used for football.

UNO should focus on other sports (hockey, basketball, baseball) where a lower athletic department budget won't put them at a huge disadvantage.

If a program is a financial drag when the athletic department is running at a deficit, it is in danger of being axed.
Here at TAMU, that's everything but football. If NIL changes college athletics to the point that swimming and diving has to go, then that's what Alberts will do.

Personally, I'd like to see an emphasis on starting a women's gymnastics team. If you watch any of their meets on tv, a big chunk of the team for every school comes from Houston or Dallas.

Agree 100%. Look at Auburn, Bama, etc. They have equestrian and still have 1 more womens sport than us.
Gymnastics ftw.

From what I can tell, folks are making noise that he killed a football program, but the article clarifies that the football program itself was bleeding money on top of being completely noncompetitive. It wasn't going to survive no matter who helmed the athletic department, considering it basically was making back less than 10% of its total expenditures.

so Alberts has shown himself to be the type not afraid to make tough decisions that may piss of the old guard in order to improve the school.

That is just what we need.

The job of an AD is about resource management. The job is running a business. You manage facilities, you produce revenue, you market, and you hire coaches.

The coaches are responsible for producing the wins. The AD is responsible for created a culture of accountability and providing the resources that the coach needs to build a program.

This will be unpopular, but his press conference was less than inspiring.

He seemed over his head and literally talked about wanting to bail on a job because it was hard.

A&M is not an easy job.

If you don't think NIL is going to eventually kill at least some non-revenue producing sports you're in for a rude awakening. The entire landscape is going to change and for most sports it will not be for the better.

Another interesting aspect will be how Title IX will be affected in the push to call athletes "employees" as some are willing to do. Many programs that exist simply to satisfy Title IX requirements might be cut as their usefulness might be eliminated.

Unfortunately because of NIL and the portal, the Golden Age of college athletics is behind us as the number of programs will be reduced and more resources will be kept by the large, revenue producing programs in order to stay competitive.

yes, and cutting minor sports programs is okay and understandable

that's what happens in the real business world

when employee benefits & compensation go up...the number of employees usually decreases

Yes, it would be horrible if he transformed our Athletics to make it more successful and less dysfunctional.

What the hell are we doing hiring this man!!
