With NIL, Portal, players opting out of bowl games for draft. Unless you are in a playoff game where most of key players play, what do they matter except allowing bowl teams to have a chance to evaluate young players before spring practice. Eventually sponsors will realize they are wasting their money for games that don't matter in the new world of college football unless they guarantee participation money to players.

I enjoy the Bowls.

I don't know the teams and what players are missing, so I just enjoy them, instead of crapping all over them.

Not every game has to be for a Championship to be enjoyed.

The smaller bowls probably mean more now. It's either these guys' last game, last chance to get noticed by another school or last chance to help themselves get drafted.

I agree. How many starters are we missing? I'll be asleep by halftime

A sports radio show compared the ratings of bowls to other major sports being played right now. Even the lowest tier bowls are beating the ratings of the best NBA games head to head. Plenty of TV money in bowl games.

At this point, the WNBA ratings are better than the NBA…

Soon, for all the bowl games, the "student-athletes" will demand an appearance fee, a new car, NIL fee, haircut, their nails done, new wardrobe, gold chains bigger than Deion's, and a DJ with music of their choice. None will request to be reimbursed for fees spent on books or tutors.

Number of Bowl Games Over Time

1980: 15
1990: 19
2000: 25
2010: 35
2020: 26
2023: 43

There were too many in 1980. Now it's just ridiculous.

Why does it matter? Having more bowl games doesn't have any effect on you since you can choose not to watch them.

It amazes me that in 2023 there are still people who think that bowl games are intended to be a reward for a good season, an athletic competition, or anything other than what they actual are, which is television content that draws more viewers than what would be aired in their place if bowls did not exist. Bowl games allow ESPN (which owns and/or broadcasts all but one or two bowl games) to sell advertising space for programs that draw 1M viewers vs content that draws 200k viewers. Until that is not the case, there will continue to be 40+ bowl games.

I for one am not watching NBA, so a scrub bowl game is perfect to sit outside and enjoy some time off with my boy and a cocktail in hand. Bad football is better than no football…

Regular season NBA games get about 1.5 million viewers. That's about the same number of people that watch Kitchen Nightmares every week. Beating that is NOT indicative of a ratings success. Just for comparison, Blue Bloods, something actually watchable, has gotten 10 million or more through most of its seasons. The Sunday Night NFL game ranges between 16 and 20.

What exactly is the profit margin? How do the Les valuable bowls provide advertising by lead in and build up to the playoffs? How much does ESPN have to share with the NBA v. their often captive or non-existent organizing committee?

If you want to provide a meaningful analysis, try scratching the surface of your first fact.

But are they beating the ratings of the WNBA games?

Networks love the bowls and the ratings are good enough for them to continue paying. They're not going anywhere and the pearl clutching by you guys that get triggered by something you don't want to watch will continue like the argument about the time change in November.

Can't wait to see who complains next year.

They can have all the bowls they want. If I don't care about a game I won't watch it. I'm just glad we're in one so it delays by a month all the off season threads.
Plus, if people stop by that I don't like, I can pretend to be interested in a bowl game while my wife talks to them and they'll leave quicker. They might not buy my pretend interest in the love Boat Christmas reunion musical.

The bowl games won't ever completly die.
Too much $ and for majority of college football they are the pinnacle
Yes for most big P5 confrence teams now with expanded playoff a bowl game is meaningless
But tonight watching Texas State / Rice and Kansas/ UNLV the bowl game is a big deal.
If you don't like don't watch, some of us like college football.

Give everyone the 15 post season practices that the bowl teams get, and let the scrub bowls die a natural death.

I agree with extending the extra practices to those thst want them. But doing that to kill something you don't care about is just repeating your control issues in public. ESPN no longer fully controlling the playoffs will sort the other bowl games as will the expansion. But only 12 teams of 130ish go to the playoffs. NCAA rules always allowed decent swag bags without making the event fully professional. It is a reward both to play and enjoy the atmosphere of the extra game. People sitting in front of TVs are probably the laziest people on earth to decide what is good TV.

The funny thing is the scrub bowls are the usually more competitive and interesting because the scrub teams are less decimated by the vagaries of the new era of college football. The bowls that really suck now are the big ones that aren't tied into the playoffs in that year because you have name teams with half the names sitting out. Obviously, those won't die

There are at least 10-15 too many bowls though. Having a winning record should be the minimum cut line.
