If you hit the portal, you should have to pay back the scholarship money. It works to discourage people that go to the military academies when they choose to exit early. I don't really care if a potential suitor (another school) pays it back for them, but the schools shouldn't have to pay for scholarships if you don't plan to complete your degree.

I think this could slow the absolute hemorrhaging of the terrible system that has been created as of late.

How about this? Players getting NIL don't get free college. Want to play pretend grownup? Cool, so grow up.

Yeah. The whole system needs a complete overhaul. Using the kids as cheap (scholarship costs) labor for all those years was obviously not fair to them once college football became a big money business.

But these piecemeal changes have created some really ridiculous situations.

The kids are basically professional free agents now. But the universities are essentially forced to sign 1 year deals. Professional teams have some sort of consistency with multi year contracts for their players.

The list of needed changes is quite long.

It sounds like a great way to hemorrhage recruits at your school. Thats not how you woo somebody. When you ask a girl out you don't lead with "if you ever try to leave me I will screw you over any way I can."

Also if you hustled this system right a school could make a lot of money. The actual cost to the school for having an athlete on scholarship is nowhere near the sticker price. if you're already running an English 101 lecture for a bunch of paying students, letting one more guy sit in there costs you like nothing. If you could then get paid the full cost of attendance for driving that guy away, you could do The Producers with this thing.

The cost of training a football player is huge. Think of all the facilities, expensive coaches, and top notch medical care/physical therapy they get. Probably something like a West Point education.

Obviously it would have to be a league wide NCAA rule/ mandate at all schools.

NCAA is done. Teams will regulate themselves. Wide open for the next 20 years.

It's not like the student athlete gets a check for 4 years of tuition, room, and board.

If they are here in the Fall, it's covered. If they leave in the Spring / Summer, it's not.

Related, NIL should be 6 months at a time too; those contracts would be dumb if not.

So, I'm not sure what you are actually saying.

The NCAA knows damn well they're one attempt to enforce some NIL bull**** from extinction

walk-ons don't have to pay for that stuff, why should scholarship players have to pay for it?

Why? Their scholarship for them to play football, they did that. If they leave at the end of the first semester, their expenses or not paid. Your proposal makes no sense.

Or maybe Jimbo should pay the schollies I think that the ethical because he made the promise and he gets the 76 millions buyout last week
Edit bc Jimbo was at fault for not being a good coach and just saying execute the next play. He didn't change the concept like Nick Saban did telling Milroe to be a Point guard making assists and play making driving first downs with his legs

I agree so long as you make engineering students payback any scholarships if they decide to transfer to another school.

I like this one. Most athletes don't get in on their smarts. Save the scholarships for the smart people that actually contribute to the things that matter.

Just drop the pretense of them being student athlete.

Don't have to be a student. No scholarship.

They were always 1 year deals. Players lose scholarships too. Sometimes they even get a certified letter over the break informing them they've been dropped.

Scholarships were always 1-year deals and the university/athletic department could pull that at any time for any reason.

players need to become employees with a players union etc...with the universities as the "owners".

then they can sign contracts that are for a certain duration and become free agents when those contracts are up.

short of that, if they can't reinstate the sit out a year for transfer rule, then I don't see anything else working.

R Bjork already involved, and they are awaiting a couple court cases underway regarding student athletes and pay. Issue are state laws are inconsistent (Tx is a right to work state vs. some of the the other states in the US).

Even though we give scholarships, aren't they up for review each year (i.e., annually reviewed and decided to get another year)? So, if a kid leaves, there's nothing to 'get back' as they haven't rec'd 4 yrs of funding 'ealy'.

Yep, and that's my issue with the current state of CFB. Contracts are coming with NIL being here, and that will help set some consistency. I think they will be 3 year contracts with a +1 option for both the school and player. If a player chooses to transfer before that 3 years, there will be a penalty paid just like when a coach leaves.

Let's say you have an academic scholarship and decide to transfer. Do you have to pay that back? I honestly don't know the answer but I would guess you don't. People need to grow up and learn to move on. We fired the coach and the entire staff. These are the consequences of that action. If you can't cope with the fallout then you shouldn't be firing your coach.

Your example only works if they only had athletic scholarships, but they do not.

But, if you had an academic scholarship and were getting paid 6-figures (7 in some instances) on top of that, I bet there would be stipulations on what would happen if you leave to go to another school.

That's even more absurd. They had a job and were being paid to do that job. If you had a student worker job with the university and transferred they are not going to come to you and ask for your salary back. I also don't pretend to understand the details of NIL payments but unless they signed a contract to work for four years (which I doubt) then there is nothing you can do.

The $ thing should be easy to contract around. The mess is caused by the easy transfers. College football schools (not necessarily the NCAA?) need to have limits.

Like, one free transfer with no loss of eligibility, but must sit a year.

Second transfer, you sit 2 seasons. No 3rd transfer.
