I was very against hiring Jeff Traylor. But curiosity got me to listen to a few of his interviews and coaching mic'ed up videos on YouTube
My observations:
- he has a Dabo vibe to him. It's an east Texas AF version of it but there is something similar
- "I need to look at what our players strengths and weaknesses are and adapt our approach from there. I would not force something that is or there" - paraphrasing when he took UTSA job. I think this fits our current roster well for the near term
- I have several friends in the high school coaching ranks and they all RAVE about him. When he talks about his Texas HS connections it's real.
- Because of connections and our NIL I am pretty sure he would dominate tu in recruiting. The coaches would vouch for him over Sark and try to push out of state coaches for him. I do think he needs Elijah on staff for out of state but he would likely own Texas
- A performance based contract with him could work very well
- This is not a coach who has already peaked in his career. I'm tired of us going for coaches post peak. He will peak here or somewhere else. Is it a national title peak? No clue but he has brighter days ahead
- if we were in the Big 12 or SWC I would be very confident he would do very well. SEC is a different animal and this is where the risk comes
Is he my favorite candidate? No, he IS risky. But I'd be willing to take the risk and try it for 2-3 seasons and see what happens especially with a performance based contract in place
