sorry, its premium information, but he got a DWI and is suspended from the team. Good way to go somewhere else to get an opportunity to make the NFL (riiiiiiight).

Yeah, DWI's always keep people out of the NFL.

kind of hard to showcase your talent if you are suspended.

Not being able to play at the crappy school you transfered to definitely will, though. And if you aren't a total stud, Yes, a DWI will affect the opinion of your character and if you are on the fence, something like that will knock you off in a heart beat. Face it, Long was a fence leaner at best, he wasn't one of these studs where you take him eventhough he has baggage.

Sam Houston State suspends two football players
By The Huntsville Item

Two Sam Houston State University football players have been suspended following their arrests early Wednesday morning.

Quarterback Dustin Long, 22, and tight end Boss Doucette, 21, were arrested early Wednesday morning in the 500 block of Bowers Blvd. by University Police Department officers.

Long, a senior from Port Neches-Groves, who transferred to SHSU this past spring from Texas A&M, was arrested and taken to the Walker County Jail and booked on the charge of driving while intoxicated.

Doucette, a junior from Mont Belvieu, was arrested and charged with public intoxication. According to the police report, Doucette approached officers after Long's vehicle was pulled over and began to interfere with their investigation.

SHSU director of athletics Bobby Williams said in a press release that both players have been suspended for a violation of athletic department and university policies. Long and Doucette are suspended until the SHSU Department Disciplinary Committee has the opportunity to review the situation and decide upon an appropriate action.

Long, 6-foot-3, 210 pounds, was the starting quarterback at Texas A&M during the 2002 season, and shared playing time last season with sophomore Reggie McNeal. He is expected to be SHSU's starting quarterback during the 2004 season.

Doucette, 6-foot-3, 220 pounds, saw limited playing time at tight end last year and also played on special teams

Correct... it's not premium, it is a newspaper article.

He'll play, I'll be my left nut.

I also think he has an opportunity to play in the NFL.

An arrest for a DWI is not as bad a rape, beating a girlfriend up, stealing, etc. It's an error of stupidity, not an error of character.

Tabasco - I know it is a newspaper article. I was posting this in response to ag2003 saying his link was premium info.

Tabasco,
My link was, I didn't know the link to the newspaper article.
RudyJax,
I'm not saying b/c of this he has NO shot at the NFL, but the guy seroiusly, seriously hurt himself. I really don't think he ever really had the talent to go to the NFL, maybe NFL Europe or Arena League. Good luck on being your left nut.

LOL...

you're right that he's a leaner for the NFL, but, this is not going to affect his chances.

Dustin has the ability that I have not seen in many QB's to throw the ball on the run and put it where he wants to.

He just needs to work on his decision making...and that's true of all QB's. Which does include driving drunk.

RudyJax,
you have got to be kidding me, the kid couldn't even start for us. How can you deem him such a stud? You have some major whatever color SHSU is colored glasses on if yoyu think he is that good. You fall under the same category as a lot of people who follow one guy from recruitment all the way up and are so narrowly focused on him that you forget their are over 100 other Div I starting QB's and only about 20 will get drafted (if that many), and a lot of those won't even make their pro team. Dustin is at best about to fall off of that fence, and when you are at that point, everything counts against you, especially getting suspended. These players that you hear about that got into all this trouble and have been arrested 8 times, etc, are the all pro caliber players where teams don't give a crap. You dont take guys with baggage to be on your practice squad.

A DWI hurts his chances of making the NFL about as much as it would hurt any of our chances of making the NFL.

Being good at football is usually a requirement for entry into the NFL.

I'm not going to get into the Reggie versus Dustin debate again. However, I think he's a better QB than he's given credit for. There is more to being a QB than having amazing athletic ability.

A QB has to be a leader. A field general. Someone that inspires his team to perform for him.

Jeff George had as much or more ability than any QB ever to play in the NFL. However, he was never a star and never set any records and played for 10 teams. Major Applewhite is considered by most as the better QB in the Sims/Applewhite battle. Who's in the NFL, and who's a disgruntled talkshow host/QB coach?

I'll sum it up as, I don't think Dustin was ever given the fair opportunity here. His transfer is the biggest loss we have, and we're going to pay for it.

All this being said, I don't think that this will stop Dustin from playing in the fall. Give him the right coaching, I think he has the ability to play in the NFL.

How long do you want to ignore this user?
Rudyjax, I thought Dustin Long was given a fair opportunity, he just didn't take sufficient advantage of the opportunity he had. To increase "fairness" to him would have taken away some "fairness" to someone else (in this case, mainly Reggie). Dustin made some great plays, but made enough bad ones to keep him from securing his position.

But I'll agree that this incident will not keep him from playing in the NFL. Mistakes on the field (and the lack of a cannon arm) are the biggest potential culprits there.

In a strange quirk of fate he was arrested almost directly in front of the football stadium.

Shoot, I'll just say this. You, I, and everyone here do not know what went on behind the scenes.

Who cares what went on "behind the scenes"? I don't. I remember loss-clinching INTs thrown by the fabulous bearcat long time and time again. I saw enough on the field that I didn't really care to see the bearcat on the field again. I hope the lack of depth doesn't hurt us this year, but it probably will and I'll be cussing bearcat long in my head and heart.

I always love pointing this out when people get into Reggie-Dustin debates.

Both of these guys have had their moments against bad defenses

Long had Tech, KU, and Mizzou game last year

Reggie has had Baylor, KU games this year

But who has performed better against teams who actually HAVE defenses?

Dustin couldn't get it done vs OU in '02 so Reggie came in and put on a show. Dustin was destroyed by the horns at the end of that year. What about VaTech this year? Was Dustin out there in the rain making great passes against another good to great defense? No Reggie was in there and giving us all hope that we could stun another top 5 team.

Even in Dustin's last game against texas, he couldn't even outplay an injured Reggie.

If we wanted to stay a losing team with an occasional 7 win season, Dustin would have been a fine qb for us.

But Reggie, if healthy, is the qb we need to take down the giants of college football

As for the Reggie vs. Dustin debate...

Neither one did anything consistently. Reggie had his OU game. Dustin threw 7 TDs against tech. I've seen Dustin make stupid throws. I've seen Reggie fumble snaps from under center. I've seen balls thrown by Dustin that were right on the money be dropped, kicked, and INTed. I've seen Reggie hit receivers right in the chest on slip screens and the receivers dropped the ball.

If Reggie was healthy...blah, blah, blah.
If Dustin had more time...blah, blah, blah.
If either one had a better Oline or running game...blah, blah, blah.
If grandma had nuts, she'd be grandpa.

Neither one did or has performed up to expectations for more than 4 quarters in a row. That's the bottom line. Reggie has one more year to show he is/was a better option than Dustin.

After that, it's McGee's show.

The way you guys jock Reggie, we'll have to put you on suicide watch if Reggie falls on his face...again.

DL - I'm sorry to hear this news. I hope all works out and that you get your chance to play on Sundays. Once an Aggie, ALWAYS an Aggie! Good luck to you.

RM - At this point, Reggie has not lived up to his hype. Where are all those posters who claimed that he'd be leaving for the NFL after his 2nd or 3rd season?

I hope both players surpass expectation for their respective teams in the fall.

I haven't really seen anyone putting McNeal on a pedestol, All I have been doing is saying Dustin won't make the Pro's. I don't think Reggie is that good either, but I can promise you, DUSTIN LONG WILL NOT BE DRAFTED NEXT YEAR.
