When did the crowd start doing that dumb Oooo-ing and Ahhhh-ing when the buglers roll their flags?
The crowd didn't do that stupid crap when I was in school.
Username does NOT check out. I am class of '95 and we absolutely did this as students.

False. TAMC was still military and all male back in OP's day. And OP is likely in the Guinness Book of World Records also

Coincides with the rise of the uptalker inflection with later millenials. Listen to many of the young women at the time talk. Most sentences end with that upwards inflection like they are unsure what they are stating is true and are searching for affirmation. Even many males picked up that speech pattern over the last 15 years or so, though it is beginning to fade.

I beg to differ sir. I don't recall that.

Although, to be fair....I was on campus from Fall of '87 until the end of '93 so it looks like we overlapped a little and it is possible that it may have started toward the end of my time there but I do not remember it.

It started right about when I graduated. The bugle rank "flourishes" at the start of the drill had been getting more lengthy and extravagant to the point of being pretentious, and a couple of the CT units in the corps block had their fish start the "ooh" "ahh" thing to mock them in turn. Then more of the CT's joined in.

Well, the naive third deck non reg fish heard that, assumed it was something that was normally done, and within a game or two, a new stupid tradition of appearing to mock the bugle rank at every game was locked in, apparently for all eternity.

The bandsmen who understand its origins still HATE it.
This makes perfect sense because that's the impression I get when I hear it....that's why it bugs me...seems kind of disrespectful.

I was in school 06-10 and never heard the stupid "YOUUUUUUUU!!!" until this year. I didn't go to any games last year, so maybe that's when it started. It threw me off when I heard it. I also don't like how they yell "FIRST DOWN!" Anyone know why that started?

I got out in 2002 and don't remember it then, but I think it was shortly after during the Fran or Sherman years that it slowly started. I don't really care about that as much as the dumb "hump it Ags!" DURING the War Hymn.

(Yes, I know my diploma is old enough to legally drink and I also see a cloud that needs to be yelled at).

I was a freshman in 2006, I think it was just starting then. Fish camp counselors really helped it take off.

That's pretty dumb. We had our rivalries, but didn't out right hate the band. The Qs are a bunch of goobers, but the band is great.

I have to admit, it has been the master stroke of genius in the CT Vs BQ corps rivalry, probably of all time.

With a single well timed act of mockery, some still anonymous Ct upperclassmen got his fish to start a tradition of most of the Aggies in the stand openly and loudly mocking the band leadership on the field right before every halftime drill of every home game in front of ever set of visiting fans.

As a rivalry move, it has to be considered unparalleled in the history of the university, and most of the people participating have no idea why.
I have never observed anyone around me at Kyle Field speaking negatively about the oohs and aahs or the grunts when the base rank turns. Moreover, multiple non-Aggie guests have commented that it is cool.

I remember the ooh-ing and aah-ing for the bugles when I went to school (started in '04). The new thing I've noticed since then is the loud UHH's when the tubas turn. I've always thought that was lame.

All the extra bugle flag waving robs the drill of almost a minute of marching… well, half a minute at least…

I'd rather see them MARCH! Not the bugle waving! They're not the Rockettes or the Fish Drill Team doing a Wave!

The Hump it Ags sing songy addition to Spirit started in the late aughts or early teens. Absolutely was not a thing while I was in school I don't even recall hearing it the year I had season tickets in 07.
If I had to choose between getting rid of Jimbo and eliminating this from happening, I would keep Jimbo

If you were a BQ class of '02, the first guys I knew who did it were some of your upperclassmen when we were super seniors. Think it started w/ some ct's when y'all were on the field, and gradually spread out into the student section. One of my buddies had been in the bugle corps and he was doing it with a smile by then.

*sorry, I see MouthBQ explained it pretty early in the thread.

I swear it was there in 98 but as a fish I feel like I tuned out almost everything during half time except that which was crucial to not ****ing up. I could be completely mistaken though.

Whiniest fan base that isn't in Baton Rouge or Tuscaloosa…the current students own the traditions. Each generation makes changes to traditions that the previous generation grumbles about. For example, as a Cowboys fan I despised waving a terrible towel when Sherrill introduced that. And I was a current student at the time…

Wait, A&M was waving yellow towels?
Wait…it was a Steelers tradition Sherrill imported.

Traditions belong to the new generation. Things have changed at my school too. I guess this is what you do when you aren't winning maybe? B**** about traditions.

I effing HATE that addition to Spirit. It needs to die in a fire
"Hump it Ags" in the middle of Spirit came about a decade ago thanks to Fish Camp.

I'm in favor of anything that stretches out the band's show. Just gives me more time to hit concessions stands while most of the crowd watches a show they already seen 15 times since 1965.

I don't mind the ooooh, aaaah... it's kinda funny. But when did the student body start bopping up and down while leaning left and right at 45* angles instead of swaying side to side when sawing off the horns??? That's the one that gets me.
