I know that movies "based on a true story" always have to play up things for the screen… and Sandra B and the film itself are pretty good in a vacuum, but they really did Oher pretty dirty in the portrayal.

He was a HS upperclassman who had unfortunately been to something like 8 schools in 9 years, but the film makes it out like he can barely read and certainly can't think for himself… to the point where Sandy and the 8 year old son teach him football basically by saying "you're big, go be big".

Something isn't right in all these accusations. The timing seems strange to me. I think the truth is somewhere in the middle
Almost always is.

Will wait for the full story.

Why wait 14 years later? Sounds like Oher is out of money.
As mentioned above, he just recently retired from the NFL and hired an attorney to go back and look into all of the paperwork and it was discovered that he wasn't actually adopted by the family like they said he was. As well from the movie each parent and each child except for Oher got a payout plus have been receiving royalties. Meanwhile Michael was busy working in the NFL to be able to look into all of it, once he did, he found out the truth.

Edit to add, I don't believe it has anything to do with the money but the fact that the family is profiting off of his name, image, and likeness while he gets....zero.
It seems like his profession gives the players 11-15 weeks off (3-4 months) every year where he may have had a little extra time to look into it.

Moreover he had an agent and made over $30 million during his career, so he possibly could have asked his agent/attorney to glance at it sometime in the past decades.

He didn't have any reason to be suspicious before. He thought they were his family, he thought they adopted him.

I do see the family has made a statement. Like someone else said, truth is probably somewhere in the middle! I do think timing is really odd. Appears father sold his business for a lot of money.
Lots to this story on both sides!!

People keep bringing up that the dad sold his company for a lot of money. I don't see what that has to do at all with stealing money from Oher. The two things aren't mutually exclusive. Having money from other sources doesn't mean you can't steal money from somewhere else.

He's going to have to make that argument to get around limitations, and that even though he signed the documents as an adult, he didn't actually read them or understand them and he just signed because he trusted them.

It's not an uncompelling argument.

Because it isn't just a story about Oher. It's a story about the family.

You must be joking?

The story is this family that takes in Oher after he had already lived in 5 different homes of fellow Briarcrest students in the previous year. He had slept in/lived at least 10 different homes in the previous 3 years. He had bounced through foster care and had been homeless.

The Tuohys had a HS daughter and a younger son that they invited to live in their home. If someone brought you a high school kid and said, "Mom is cocaine addict, dad is in prison. If he comes live with you, he might go to A&M, but only if you can get his 1.5 GPA up" are you taking him in?

It is a story about the value in being part of a family and the impact it had on his life. I know that the keyboard warriors hate that it comes across as a "White Savior" story, but if you watch the movie, it sure is not much of football movie.

It's starting to look like the story is about a family who took in a five star OL so that they could secure his commitment to their alma mater and who proceeded to take the lion's share of the money from a movie about how generous they were.

You say it was only $70k. Let's assume that's true because Oher's lawyer is claiming it was millions. How life changing would that money have been to Oher's (11!!) other siblings who didn't get adopted and who unlike the Thuy kids had to pay $15 for the privilege of watching the movie. I know how poor some areas of Memphis are because I was shocked when I lived there and I grew up on the Mexican border. Oher deserves every cent of that money and if what he is saying is true the Thuy's belong in jail.

The movie isn't about Oher. I do agree he should participate in royalties in the same manner he was included in the movie rights. But you're jumping off a cliff and maybe should calm down or seek help for whatever is triggering you.

What I read in this is "greedy lawyer seeks billable hours and publicity."

Kind of interesting that the Michael Oher Blindside blowup and the Johnny Football story both blow up the same week.

And both are ACTUALLY about Name Image and Likeness.

as opposed to all the money thrown around for "NIL* that really doesn't have much to do with NIL.

Good point. The movie wasn't about Oher. They should have left him out and it would have been a 15 minute YouTube short about Sandra Bullock trying to get her kids in the best private school in Germantown.

Just waiting for the whole story to come out as you have heard one side. We will see about stealing money.
There is a story out there (no clue if true or not, just like this one side) that he was demanding 15 million dollars from the family.
Appears it may play out in court!!

Timeline for the family falling out seems to be in line with his marriage to his long time girlfriend. Not saying that's the reason, but it could be the background to it all..

As a forensic accountant, it should be fairly easy to get to the bottom of it. Wait till all the facts come out.

Don't be surprised to see an out of court settlement.

Big Mike sounds like a schmuck. He had an agent when he was drafted so he could have had the agent handle the movie royalties. Nobody allows their personal story get turned into a movie for free.

He's got 4 kids and his wife doesn't want to change her lifestyle now that the nfl money is drying up. Money grab.

I think it might be tough if Oher claims that every book deal and speaking engagement was a result of his life story and he should be entitled to a portion. I think I read where she authored a couple of books and gave lots of speeches.

Whenever I see movies "based on a true story" I remind myself of the classic "Texas Chainsaw Massacre" which is based on a true story, except... it didn't happen in Texas (Wisconsin, I think), and it didn't involve chainsaws!
