Summer Movie: Sgt. Stubby An American Hero

Date: May. 19, 2023
Time: 7:00 PM - 9:00 PM
Hosted By: George Bush Presidential Library and Museum
Location: By the Pond

The first movie of our 2023 Summer Film Series will be "Sgt. Stubby: An American Hero" The true story of a stray dog who joins his new master on the battlefields of the First World War. For his valorous actions, Sgt. Stubby is still recognized as the most decorated dog in American history.

With World War I looming, Robert Conroy, a young Army private, adopts a stray, stump-tailed terrier. Conroy names his new friend Stubby and gives him a home, a family, and a chance to embark on the adventure that would define a century. The two quickly find themselves in the trenches of France and on the path to history. French soldier Gaston Baptiste befriends the man and dog and accompanies them along their epic journey through harsh conditions and incredible acts of courage.

Bring your blankets and lawn chairs as we enjoy this film under the stars. Games and free snacks (while supplies last) will begin at 7 p.m., and the movie will start just after sundown. You may bring your picnics and coolers, but please no pets or glass containers.

This movie is being shown in conjunction with our newest exhibit Honor, Courage, Commitment: Marine Corps Art, , 1975-2018.

The Marine art exhibit features works of art by combat artists, focusing on Marine Corps service immediately following the Vietnam War through recent years. The art speaks to the experiences of the artists, most of whom were deployed in combat. This exhibit will be on display in the Fidelity Corridor from May to January 2, 2024.

Interesting that it isn't clear in that blurb that Sgt. Stubby was in fact a dreaded Pit Bull.

Pitties are misunderstood. Raise them gentle-like and they're the wimpiest, sweetest pups ever.
