"Having coached against him the things they do on offense. The way his players are coached it's phenomenal… He's one of the toughest guys I've gone against."

That's what Nick Saban told ESPN this past summer.

But someone said we should take the zoo's word on this one…

Nick follows the Belichick method of being overly complimentary of your competition to avoid any controversy or distractions. Which is why last off season and him calling out A&M publicly was so surprising

This is the same guy who hired and is still paying BOB. Take it with a grain of salt…

I do think if Saban had hired Petrino the media would be talking about how genius of a hire it was. Jimbo doesn't get that credit right now and won't until we start making some noise.

Given our track record of hiring coaches, that's probably why we hired him. A Saban quote.

If it works out, it's a great hire. If it doesn't, it wasn't.

I'm glad I came here.

In the long run, Saban may or may not be right about this.

Saban could hire a sack of potatoes to be his next OC and media would treat it like the second coming of Christ.

Complaining that Jimbo doesn't get the same benefit of the doubt as Saban is absolutely trying to compare the two.

Saban is gaslighting.

Saying nice and respectful things is one thing. Calling a coach one of the toughest you've ever gone against is another thing entirely. You can't say that about just anyone, and Saban doesn't.

Now post the one where he says "The other coach isn't very good."

Saban would make it a genius hire by putting the guy in his lane, allowing him to do what he does well and insulating him from what he does not do well.

Let's hope Jimbo can do the same.

Making someone feel good about their decision is pretty much the opposite of gaslighting.

Not to impugn the journalistic integrity of a picture quote on Instagram, but is there any sourcing a little higher up the food chain than some rando on Instagram? (Just to get in front of this a little, some rando on Twitter isn't higher. Nor is the politics board).

Edit: and I'm not saying Saban wouldn't have said it, I just can't think why he would have talked about Petrino since Petrino was actually at Arkansas, which wouldn't mean that much since he tends to talk up his opponents; it's like the old Mack Brown "[whoever] scares you to death" line or Lou Holtz talking up every team he ever played like they were practically national title contenders no matter how many losses they had. Then Bama usually goes out, hangs a 30 point win them, and he complains about rat poison and the cycle begins anew.

By the way, I haven't found the quote, but I may have found the game Saban may have been pre-game poor mouthing. Bama played Louisville in 2018. In case anyone is wondering the result, Bama beat Louisville 51-14.

He said we "bought all of those players". That wasn't proven true. Us having a bad season is irrelevant to that.

I feel confident Nick laughed as soon as the camera was turned off. Rat poison, blah blah blah.

I said "sort of" because technically you're correct. But the big picture is that Nick isn't going to start and engage a public show with another coach if it's going to hurt his team and help the other team.

In this instance, his public back and forth with Jimbo was successful because it didn't hurt his team or help the aggies. and the ****show we had this year kind of proved we probably bought some players that were not mentally invested in A&M football or helping the team. Very selfish freshman making stupid decisions and then transferring as soon as they could. Never happened before. so maybe Nick was right. Maybe we did buy a good recruting class, but weren't prepared to keep and maintain a bunch of arrogant 18 year olds that are looking for instant success and cash.
