can you imagine if we hadn't just landed the top running back in the nation like a week ago where some of these posters would be. the sky is falling but we just landed a stud 5 star recruit. it's not either it's always somewhere in between. life isn't black and white it's gray. football and recruiting is the same way. it's never or hardly ever as good or bad as it seems. we are losing some good players in the portal but most hadn't really played or were suspended.

Does Billy even come on the football boards?

A few of the portal guys are walk-ons, but even so you're still looking at between 25%-30% roster turnover, not counting graduates and NFL departures. Right now you're set to replace about half or less with comparable incoming talent from the '23 class number wise, with very few of the incoming positions set to address the areas we've seen the most problematic losses (WR, CB, LB).

Even without getting worked up over it there's still no other way to really describe it other than "bad" and ultimately a failure of our current staff.

The problem is potentially losing 25+ players in the portal. Playing time or not, you can't ultimately win championships or even a lot of games with a team of fresh out of high school recruits, no matter how good they are. You need retention and development to build depth, and you can't have those if you are losing dozens of players. Guys who haven't seen the field haven't seen the field yet, and it's better in the long term to keep them and the potential they bring than to be a revolving door of the latest highly rated HS players. Just because they haven't cracked the depth chart doesn't mean they're not a loss moving forward.

And we're not exactly loading up on talent in the '23 class to replace them as ESD approaches. Not likely to gain traction in the '24 class until next season (kids will be in "prove it to me" mode) IF we jump up to 9+ wins. And at that point you're probably counting on flips and playing catch-up with guys who haven't given you much attention to that point compared to other schools.

Going to have to kill it in the portal AND pull off some evaluation magic of lower rated kids for at least '23 if we're going to avoid long term repercussions from what we're seeing.

It will be critical to success in the next year or 2 to get some experienced players out of the portal. Not just experienced but talented and developed.

I see 2 types of players to go after:
1) players that were highly recruited and very talented out of high school that went to big name programs where they see too many players ahead of them to be able to get the playing time they want, as soon as they want
OR
2) players that were not so highly recruited that ended up at lesser programs where they excelled, but now want a shot at a bigger name program.

I think I actually would want more of player 2 than player 1.

Yeah. Jimbo could bounce back like Kelly at ND, but not if he loses a ton of guys and can't find replacements. If he doesn't, I think the this thing comes off the rails. Gonna be hard to sell low grade mediocrity and blame failure on injuries and lack of depth after 6 years.

Really? It couldn't be that none of them were starters and so would like to perhaps have that opportunity elsewhere could it? Nahh. This could only be about jimbo. Because otherwise we could never get another team's Qb from the portal, and no other team loses anyone ever. This is all and only on jimbo.
