It has been in place for a LONG time. Doesn't come into play that much after the second round of the playoffs, though.

Actually it makes perfect sense that it would. In a state championship game, the Referee has his mic on during the entire time, gives some speech he isn't used to giving, and then has to take everything as it comes out of the captains' mouths. He might have forgotten to confirm with the coaches prior to the game what they wanted to do if they won the toss or had the first half choice. Plus, the sideline officials bringing the captains out (I'm assuming they are working 7 man -- the Referee and Umpire are already at midfield) SHOULD have confirmed with the captains and a coach nearby what their choice would be.

The captain is thinking "defer and kick from/to the clock" and can't get "kick" out of his head. Thus, when the other team says, "defer" he says "kick." The Referee SHOULD say, after a captain chooses "defer", "you want the ball, right" instead of "what is your choice." WITH THAT SAID, I have seen coaches that were adamant they wanted to kick, knowing they would kick off twice in the game. So there's about a 2% chance that happened here.

Everything is going very fast and everyone there, players, coaches and officials, are extremely excited and moving 10x the speed the normally move at. Kickoff can't come fast enough and all the pregame stuff is BS and nerve-racking.

I don't know how the state championship games go, but for all of our games and our one playoff game, the Head Coaches do the coin toss and all that before the game after the teams come off the field for pre-game. The captains going to the middle of the field for the "coin toss" is just a symbolic thing.

Again, maybe it's different some places. But we're a 6A school in DFW and that's how we do all of our games.

Hawley has a bigger and not quite as fast but their receivers are big and fast enough. Refugio was lucky to beat Timpson today they got blasted.

Yes, normally the toss is done in the locker room. Not sure if it's different for this game.

I was told that both coaches have to agree to flip before the game(which they always do) If not then it is a live flip

Hard to end a kids career on a questionable targeting call. I don't like it. Technically it's the right call, but it still sucks for the senior

All these games have been blowouts so far. Hopefully tonight is a better game

Looks pretty one sided for Gunter so far, but there's another half to play. Time for the big locker room speech.

Gunter alum here, also at the game. Poth is a strong bunch of boys, there's a whole half left to play and they are no joke. Hope my hometown boys don't let up and finish strong.

Gunter has 312 students. They are around 50 under the 3aD1 cutoff. They are just good

They've always been good but Feizel made them better. Used to be a lot of battles there with Pilot Point, Celina and Gunter.
