Which A is that Alabama, Arkansas, Arizona, etc.?

Context clues are hard.
LOL, I was well into the bottle when I asked that question and I had lost sight of what was being discussed. Muddled. Sober now.

My wife is an Aggie and I am a Longhorn. From birth, we tried NOT to steer our child to either UT or A&M. We both wanted a better academic school that was the best fit.

Happily, our child is a fan of both UT / A&M; but, thriving at a top school.
Yet you're not proud enough to identify it. So is it really a top school?

The nostalgia of A&M has worn off, sure. And that "other education " has worn off too. But if you want to consider colleges purely based on job prospects, you'd be foolish not to consider A&M one of your tops. This is especially noticeable at A&MS career day. Have you really been around to other colleges and compared.

A&M is a "monster " of a school in many ways and their career day is no exception. Hundreds, if not thousands of all the best companies in the country. Only a very select few companies choose not to make a showing at A&M.

My son is in grad school at Oregon State and saw the difference. The best description in comparison is pathetic. He actually came down to A&MS career day to get a job offer that he accepted right next door to his house in Oregon. From a company that didn't bother to visit Oregon States career day.

If that's anywhere on your radar for picking a university, you'd be very uninformed, or a fool, to dismiss A&M too easily.

"A&M is not the same A&M I went to. So I really don't care if my kids want to go there."

What BS! What nonsense! Of course the school is not the same as when you went there; It is better, much better! I graduated 58 years ago and I love the place more now than I did then. In five years I will love it more than I do now.

Definitely won't be pushing my kids towards a college with 75,000 students. There are better options.

My wife and I are both Ags with 2 boys. My oldest son was an honor student, athlete, good scores, etc in HS and didn't get in to A&M. He said "if they don't want me I don't want them" and that was that. He just graduated from Ok St Magna Cum Laude with an aviation degree and is now a flight instructor working his way to industry. I mention simply as a reminder that God has a plan. Let it happen.
We love Stillwater, the school, the poke culture and have really become big fans.
But my youngest son will be at A&M in the fall so there's that :-)

My son chose Purdue but he loves A&M. He is a big sports fan so growing up we watched a lot of Aggie sporting events. It did not work out but he got a great education and landed a great job. If the Aggies played Purdue in any sporting event no doubt he would cheer for the Aggies. He did attend A&M for one summer semester. His claim to fame is that in his first day of class he sat next to a freshman football player named Johnny Manziel. Manziel was very nice to him and gave him directions as my son was unfamiliar with the campus. He did not know who Manziel was at the time, but unfortunately Manziel did not return after first day.

Love the "A&M is woke" narrative. It reminds me of my dad who rails on Wokeness despite the fact his hippy a** smoked more weed and did psychedelic drugs in the 1960s than any "woke" kid of today could do in 3 lifetimes. He was an embarrassment to my granddad but he won't admit that…Would rather be holier than thou and live in the past..

Lots of good old day syndrome around here. We all tend to idealize our college experience as we get older. Loved my time at A&M In the early 90's but my day is long gone. My oldest is now a student at A&M and is absolutely loving HER experience not reliving mine. I love seeing all changes and new things on campus and around town. I'm a little jealous to be honest…. But hey, yell at clouds if it makes you happy
This... Reading this thread I was thinking "isn't this the way it's ALWAYS been"? When I was at A&M in the 90s, the running joke was "Well, in Ol' Army days..." thinking of the graduates that would complain that it "just wasn't the same." Now we're the "Ol Ags".

For every story in this thread where a student decided to go elsewhere, you can probably find one or more where a legacy student did decide to go to A&M and loves it.

I don't get those that would have you believe A&M is radically different than their days. I just don't see it.

My Brother-in-law went to Arkansas. It's a really nice campus in a great part of Arkansas. They have actual seasons and good sports teams.
However, they might be in more of a "nothing else exists outside Arkansas" bubble than Aggies are.

At the end of the day, congrats are in order. Sounds like your young person is making a sensible decision and going to a major research university, at the undergrad level degrees are fairly standard and they'll get a quality education no matter where they go.

An additional bonus, now that Bert is gone you don't have to see his ugly mug when you watch hogs games with your kid! (And hey, if it isn't the right fit after a couple semesters they can always transfer).

Just got back a few days ago from Lubbock with my oldest for Tech orientation. Couldn't be happier for her! Spent $180 on tech gear for the family when we come down to visit (hopefully for a football game). Wore my tech polo with pride the last day on campus.

I HATED tech back in my college days cause we played them every year and the pirate usually kicked the crap out of us. But fast forward 20 years and I could care less. Guns up for my daughter!
. My oldest graduated from Ark and my youngest is there now. I've been to a few games with them but I'm not putting on Ark gear (and NFW if wear Tech hear)!

... A&M is trying to be the largest university in the world.
Indira Gandhi National Open University - 4.9 million students

The Indira Gandhi National Open University is located in Delhi, India. The university has more than 4,000,000 students. Its most popular learning venues are those through open and distance learning. Indira Gandhi National Open promotes research, teaching, extension, and training as part of its curricula. The university has also established its first regional headquarters in Kerala, with more planned in the future to cater to even more students still.

I bet their NIL deals are insane.

…despite 18 years years of heavy Aggie indoctrination…

it was down to A&M, Auburn, and Hogs. Boy choose Hogs.

So why did he break his daddy's heart?

They just hand him more money and attention and he had a lot of friends from his school go there.

A&M just gave him an offer, but not to his #1 college. Hogs gave him in-state tuition plus more money plus the honors program.

After he visited Hogs he said he "had found his people".

Kid also visited Auburn. He liked it okay. So did his daddy and mom and sister. We could have been okay with Auburn. It's a lovely town and the people are so dang nice.

But Hogs?

Son went to OU and was in the Pride of Oklahoma , made College playoffs 3 years and played in all major bowl games - wouldn't have got that experience at A&M
One daughter went to Oklahoma Baptist - she is a die hard A&M fan
Other daughter went to Baylor has a Men's and Women's Natty in BB - no experience like that at Aggieland,

All that said and last October both girls were with me at Kyle when we took down bama . My BU daughter gave up a home game to watch A&M win, when I asked her why she said "Jimbo said in the summer to circle that date on our calenders so I did."

Your kid will always love A&M if they were raised Aggies

I've been pushing Deep South schools only to my children. A&M is a great school ... that is far more liberal than I am raising my kids.

If you could put a non Mormon BYU in the South I'd be pushing my kids there.
I'd challenge you on that point! Are you making that statement based on your personal religious/theological beliefs? If so, I disagree strongly. I am an '89 grad, a follower of Jesus and I can attest the student body has far more Christ followers than when I attended. Breakaway averages 13,000 students every Tues night!

What about conservative politics? In '87, only 4% of the student body identified as a democrat and the I'm fairly certain the numbers haven't changed appreciably.

It's pretty darn conservative and frankly, it's good to have people challenge your beliefs some. I'm not suggesting Cal or University of Moscow but I had a left wing agronomist prof that woke my protected rear end up.

I still strongly believe A&M is a "Values culture" education meaning historic American values are promoted and cherished.

Well, it's a school that is big but is not a great school academically, which is what I think he is referencing. But, then again, we are in a thread where people are pumping up Arkansas academics. I'm just along for the ride.

Not at all saying kids choosing to attend these schools are "lesser than" when all is said and done, but generally speaking, it's a mistake to compare these schools to A&M.

Is A&M a good school? Yes
Is Texas a good school? Yes

Is Arky a good school? I honestly cannot tell you as I have only passed through the state.

In 2022, with the price of tuition the way it is, and degrees being certificates of achievements, I too would go to the school that offered the best financial package overall.

I routinely make hiring decisions for six-figure jobs... As much as I'd like to recruit Aggies, I cannot honestly say that college choice has zero bearing on my decision. ZERO. I've even recommended hiring people without degrees.

When I went to A&M, there was a stark rise in tuition from when Gates had just arrived on campus to when he was nominated for SECDEF. I know there are many external factors and the Texas legislature behind this, but it was honestly remarkable looking at fish year tuition versus zip year tuition (and beyond).
