I am a San Francisco Giants fan, and I was streaming some of the San Diego Padres vs San Francisco Giants game on mlbstream.tv last night. At the end of the Giants' 13-2 win over the Padres, I noticed Alyssa Nakken taking over as the first base coach.
It's crazy to me that a major news organization genuinely did not see the humor with that picture.

I watched the game too. The other coach was kicked out of the game, which is why she went in to coach first. It wasn't officially a planned change last night.
Yes, her role exists only because she's a woman. And watching hundreds of giants games, I've concluded that no one really knows what she's actually a coach of. But her coaching first last night wasn't her role, as she went in out of necessity. And considering it was a blow out, it was a pretty ideal time to do what would have been inevitable anyway.
I can picture all the marketing execs at Coca Cola headquarters trying to figure out how they can capitalize on this.

Eh so you seriously think she would have that job if she wasn't a woman? Not to virtue signal? Again, her coaching position is a mystery to most people, and that isn't really what matters. I have no clue what she coaches, and honestly don't care. I know almost all the other coaches on the team and what they do, but after a few years with the team all anyone ever talks about her in relation to her position is that she's a woman. And she used to play softball, that is brought up occasionally. What matters is that she's the first woman coach, and the giants get to brag about that to the world. I am a huge giants fan, so I watch almost all the games and love the local broadcasts (thank you vpn), but no one ever comments on her work as a coach. Not once. Only that she's a woman and that she's the first. Shouldn't the work she does matter more than what she's got between her legs? I don't care if she's a woman, as long as she is there because she belongs there, not as a person to parade out there to say she's the first. And that she does a good job. Results are what matters, not being able to focus on things like this.
That said, she did a good job coaching first last night. So i have no reason to believe she can't do the job. I just wish they'd focus on that over what sex she is.

She can add absolutely zero value in this case. For a fact, she has never played baseball. And she sure as hell has never played it at the level she's coaching at right now. And every guy on the team she coaches knows it.

I don't know this for a fact, but I'm going to guess he played basketball.
And whatever league he played in was more competitive than the equivalent women's league.

Gary Blair proved he can coach a winning women's basketball team. He didn't get the position because of his gender, but because of his results. As a Giants fan, I will also say that the orange uniforms look stupid. I didn't even recognize what team she was coaching for at first - I thought it was the visiting team. It wasn't until I realized the other players were from the Padres that I figured out she was coaching for the Giants.

She's about as qualified as me to be a 1st base coach. I haven't played baseball since t-ball. It isn't that she's a woman. It's that she's a token hire who happens to be a woman. You gals gotta stick together, But come on...
She has worked in the Giants baseball operations for 7 years before she got the asst coaching job.
Eric Spoelstra started as a video tape operator for the heat and he went on to win an NBA title and has the heat as the number one seed in the Eastern Conference this year. You don't have to play the sport to be a good coach
