I had a couple meals with Coach Madden. Enjoyed being around him those 2 times. Not too many did it better than him. Hall of Fame coach and a good guy.

And boy could he eat.

Never knew that he leads the NFL in coaching winning %. Averaged over 10 wins per season for 10 years.

Good coach.

Better commentator.

Greatest marketer.

What he did with Miller Lite and Madden NFL may never be duplicated.

I loved Madden. He was so fun to listen to on the football games, especially his tangents on any and all subjects. Socks, trees, dogs, helmets, turkey legs, etc. you name it.

He also loved the drawing-on screen-technology that came in to the broadcasts.

Also the fact that he wouldn't fly and drove his bus everywhere.

I do remember him as a coach as well. He could get pretty excited on the sidelines.

Such a neat guy. RIP Mr. Madden.

Lose legends like John Madden, and get stuck with ******s like Joe Buck. Nobody did a better Turkey breakdown.

Absolutely love his Chris Farley call of games. A completely loveable character.

Practical, down to earth, charitable, funny.

John Madden was Football Greatness.

Rest in peace, big guy.

Thanks to Madden, we have Chuy's bringing hatch green chilies to the masses. A quote from an old Texags post…

"Chuy's is New Mexico Mexican food copied from the original Chuy's (since 1959) in Van Horn, Texas. The original Chuy's was made famous by John Madden's fear of flying combined with wanting to watch Monday night football during a cross country bus ride in 1987. "

My favorite NFL color commentator. RIP.

A great Madden quote from the 90s after Moose Johnston caught an out route for no gain and ran out of bounds.

"I know the Cowboys don't have a play in their playbook for zero yards."

I loved that guy! RIP

Yeah he never flew, due to it he never covered the Pro Bowl since he wouldn't fly to Hawaii. May he indulge in Turducken and Brett Favre Highlights in Heaven.

He hated flying. He had a big RV during his broadcast days. Not sure what he did as coach.

he really highlighted the beauty of the offensive line work with his "Boom" and the big guys "hitching up" their pants.

you always knew it was a big game when the RV came rolling into town.
I wanna see our defense pissed off, not confused, maybe a little murder in their hearts Reload12, 11/4/11

I will always remember the Cowboy game when he circled Nate Newton's butt with the round circle of sweat.

All of his road-tripping to broadcast games across the country had him stopping a Chuy's Restaurant in Van Horn more than once. They had a special chair for him... pretty cool. Sat in it once, could have fit someone else in with me. He was fun to listen to.

Come to think of it, I think there is a chair at some random restaurant I've been to in my trekkings across the country that is the one that John Madden used when he traveled through and ate there....

Same. Thought he'd been dead for a while.
That's how you know, as a celeb, you're doing retirement right.

Madden and Summerall were THE sound of NFL Sunday for a whole generation. It didn't get any better. And it still hasn't.

Favorite Madden moment…….in the middle of a Cowboys game, when the cameraman zoomed in on a half eaten Snickers bar that was laying on the field near the line of scrimmage. It may have been his, it may not have been his, but Madden immediately decided that that Snickers had to belong to Nate Newton. And he perseverated on Nate and that Snickers bar for probably the next full quarter while poor Summerall was left to carry the actual game broadcast by himself. Classic. Telestrator on the Cowboys sideline, finding other food wrappers and tying them all back to Nate Newton.

RIP big man. You were one of a kind.

I stumbled across this story told by Dave Humm who played QB for Nebraska and the Raiders. Classic Madden.

Scroll down the page a bit for the audio.
