Watching the Mississippi St - Auburn highlights doesn't exactly scream 'Mason is an upgrade'

Elko got destroyed by Miss St

And I'm a big Elko fan by the way. But every DC is gonna have those "wth" games on their resume. That's just the day and age of college football. Doesn't mean they aren't an elite DC.

If giving up 26 in that game was Elko getting destroyed I am not sure what you call giving up a 28-3 lead, 6 TD passes and like 40 straight points.

From a pure DC track record perspective, Elko has a pretty clear edge on Mason.

Rogers threw for 400 yards and 3 TDs. Our secondary got torched.

You also have to factor in the fact that Mason is working with much less talent at Auburn. And yes, it's much less. Our defense is on a completely different level talent wise, and the gap is only getting bigger. Mason would kick tail with our roster.

You know that Mason has only been a DC for like 3 seasons, right? He was a co-DC for a couple of years before that. Elko had over a decade at the helm putting up great numbers and turning around multiple no talent defenses.

All I am saying is that trying to claim Mason would be an upgrade is some serious kool-aid, if not comical.

I'm still floored Elko took the Duke job. There isn't a question as to whether or not they're committed to winning. They aren't. Surely he could have found a first HC gig where long-term failure isn't guaranteed...

You could say the same about Aranda to Baylor. Even mild success will make you a favorable candidate for a big time program.

Baylor has at least had success over the last decade whereas Duke still just feels like an on the rise/feel good story, much like Kentucky. Basketball school that's average to above average at football

I say this through clinched teeth while trying not to puke but Baylor football has moved beyond the "aww bless their hearts" status and is actually pretty competitive year in and year out. Duke?…..eh

Are there schools that are "committed to winning" where long term success is guaranteed? Tech fired Matt Wells after 3 years. Miss State fired Joe Moorhead after 2. Cutcliffe was at Duke for 14 years. Elko probably saw an opportunity to establish some continuity and be given an honest chance to develop the program.

Nailed it. And statistically, he's fielded mediocre Ds, with no upward trend from one year to the next.

Any thoughts on the cincy defensive coordinator? I think his name is mike tressel. I have to think at this point the coordinator we're going after is on one of the playoff teams.

I bet we promote from within. But if we are doing that I don't know why they wont just announce it.

I think he'd be a fantastic hire. Cincy's defense has allowed only 4.32 yards per play, third best in FBS behind Georgia and Wisconsin. Plus, he has the pedigree with his uncle Jim Tressel winning it all at tOSU and his grandfather was a coaching legend. I'm guessing he'd be obtainable as I doubt Cincy has the $$$ to retain him, plus I would imagine he's probably got a chip on his shoulder working at Cincy and would be eager to coach an SEC defense, especially with the talent that is on the way.

It's not. At all. Our recruiting has been and is much better than theirs. It's not that close.

It is, completely. We've had 6 defensive players drafted in the NFL over the past 3 years. Auburn has had 9.

Auburn will have at least 3 draftees on defense this coming year. McCreary is probable 1st round. McLain & Monday are definite draft picks.

So, yeah, Mason had plenty of talent this year. If you want to argue futures, sure I guess although Auburn will likely always at least have top 15-20 type talent which any good DC can use to put a good unit together.

Why would the last three years matter if Mason just got there in 2021?

Was Miss State the first game Chappell played/started?
He was in over his head at the start of the season but really came on as he got experience. That might have factored into our D getting torched.

I think Belk from UH is more likely than Mason. They run a 3-4, which doesn't fit us, but he's a secondary guy so might not be married to a specific front alignment.
