Pardon my ignorance about recruiting/signing class rules

Honest question about the number of guys we can sign. I'm looking at the numbers and I thought 25 was the max number of guys we can sign per class. Is this still the case? If we add Perkins, Stewart, banks and harris, that would be phenomenal, but would that mean that we couldn't sign other guys like matthews, white and lucas?

I guess the real question is, do we have any extra room to sign everyone we want?

I believe that if we had extra schollies from last year we can use them for early enrollees.

I'm not 100% sure but I believe that's true.

The more people that transfer out or underclass men that declare for the draft, the more spots/scholarships are available! Hence why Bama always sign 27/28, they always see attrition from the draft and transfers out!

So, what is our number this year? Do we have the space to sign 29 guys this season if we can get 4 or 5 of them to be early enrollees?

A scholarship is never too many, nor is it not enough, there are precisely the number there needs to be.

From what I've gathered we have two or three that we can put in last years class. That would give us 27-28 in this class. Then I believe we can add up to 7 transform the portal assuming we have 7 transfer out.

No offense to our current team but the way this class is shaping up I would be cool if we took 50.

We have one transfer portal guy, so that get us to 26 for this year. Any who enroll for the spring can count towards last year's class. But we had 26 enrollees last year, so there may not be room there.

I'm guessing most of the early enrollees will be taking the place of someone here already on scholarship who maybe is getting ready to leave (weather he knows it or not).

2022 is a one off year. Up to 7 additional counters this year if we have atleast 7 transfers. We only have 1 in the portal but I guarantee that number will grow as kids want to play. Not sure if it will be 7, but I wouldn't be surprised. Still have to stay at 85 total. Not sure if that will limit us, but there is more wiggle room in 2022 than in a normal year. We won't turn away 5 stars, no one ever does.

I wouldn't think we'd turn away any 5* kids, I'm wondering about the 3* kids we have commits from...

In 2022 is it correct to think that 85 total scholarships is the limiting factor?
mm42

As long as we have 7 portal out, which we likely will - 85 total cap would be the limiting factor.

I don't think the coaching staff cares about "how many stars they have."

28 is the max under the new 25 per year rule unless it changed.

3 can count back to last year if they enroll early... Even if we had more than 25 last year several of them can count back to the prior year etc.

We will sign 27/28.

The 85 limit does not have to be met in the fall. We will get there, but it is not uncommon to be ~10 over your 85 man roster after signing a new class. Transfers, medical retirements, etc. we always get there. I think we were 14 over last year or the year before in January.

85 scholarship limit. Firm.

Normally, limited to 25 in a class (not counting workarounds). This year, get 1 additional member of the class for every player lost to the portal, up to 7. So 32, plus late counters, blue shirts, green shirts, grey shirts.

Edit: that is correct, the up to 7 portal replacements must be transfers.

I thought those portaling out had to be replaced by players portaling in (i.e. not high school recruits). Am I wrong?

Obviously, that's just an easy way for us to talk about them, however, I am talking specifically about a lower quality (as assessed by the coaching staff) player getting left out

Question --- I read somewhere that all kids enrolled back in 2020 would be eligible for a 5th year, and not negatively counting toward the 85cap. Meaning a 5th-yr senior would have an extra year of eligibility, that might not count against the 85cap?

I think we will start seeing current players who isn't getting PT possibly transfer with the incoming talent. This will open up more spots for 2022 as well. I wouldn't count on lower rated players (we only have 3 three stars currently) decommitting too much.

Everyone enrolled in 2020 did get an extra year of eligibility. However, they now count against the 85 limit.

The exemption above the 85 limit was only for 2021 and only applied to athletes who were only eligible because of the Covid rule.

Thanks for letting me know ...

Well ... if that's the case, it does kinda suck now for non-elite incoming student athletes across the US ... you look at all the non-nfl bound seniors and cumulatively, they could add up to a couple hundred or so each year that stick around for a 5th yr. And every school gets their respective knock against the 85cap .... that means there are going to be a couple/few hundred or so low 3* and 2* kids that might not have the opportunity for a spot at the better schools.

Great news for Texas Tech, I guess. They may get some 3* kids that previously may not have had a shot at.

Only at the start of fall. We will have more than 85 on scholarship this spring/summer but attrition will get us to 85.

The 85 limit will not prevent us from taking a 5 star.

I'm sure it's happened, but I hope it's a rare occurrence that we offer a guy, he offers a commitment, we accept that commitment, and then decide, shortly before signing day, that he's not who we really want.

Again, I'm sure such things happen, especially given injuries and/or mental health issues or grades, but that may indicate a mistake in the player evaluation process in that staff.

85 is obviously a hard cap.

We can take up to 32 new initial counters, assuming 7 transfer out of the program which will easily happen.

I expect 26-28 high school signees, and 3-4 transfers.

Just prepare yourself, because we need to lose about 16-17 underclassmen for this to happen. It will be for the better, as we are upgrading talent big time.
beerad12man

We have three 3 stars. One is a kicker, the 2nd is an in state guy, and the other we just took a commitment from because we really like.

We aren't dropping anyone. Short of someone on our list deciding for themselves, we expect to sign all 21 current commitments. I bet we sign 4-5 more that aren't committed, and then get 1-2 more in February.
