I think Aranda stays at Baylor & I think Fickell stays at Cincinnati. The gap in money has closed. Every coach is crazy rich now. Even the UTSA coach just got a bump to almost 3 million/year. I think some dudes just wanna coach & be happy and raise their family. The playoff has created a world where 40-50 teams think they're worthy, and there's only 4 slots. It makes a lot of unhappy fanbases, which ratchets up the pressure. Ohio State & Oregon will probably play for the Rose Bowl, which used to be their ultimate goal, but instead both those fanbases are pissed. Some coaches probably don't wanna deal with that sh*t.
this, to me, is the biggest difference between having a playoff and not having a playoff.
when it was the old bowl system, sure you wanted to win the NC, but you knew that you were at the mercy of voters and so you felt good winning your conference and going to a new year's day bowl, hoping that if you won the chips would fall your way.
even with the BCs, since it was only 2 teams you felt a little better about it, but now with a playoff if you don't get in the fanbases of these big programs become somewhat disengaged and apathetic towards the post-season.
it's time for expansion.
