Lived in Arkansas for awhile. Bunch of kids who got in to A&M would still pick Arky because they'd get more money. I've heard the same from Ole Miss.
Kid I know was #1 in her class decided on Ole Miss because they offered a full ride.
Hard to turn that stuff down to pay more to go to a state school when out of state will bring you on.

Parents in my town think it sounds better to say their kid goes to Ole Miss, LSU, Arkansas, Oklahoma vs. Tech, Texas State, University of Houston, UTSA, etc. So, they send them out of state if they can't get into A&M or tu.
Now, I do know a kid who chose a full ride to OU instead of going to A&M with very little $$ offered. Dad is an ag and was disappointed. But, kid plans on going to medical school and this was best deal financially for the long term.

Ole Miss recruits heavily in the State of Texas for students to fill their ranks and offers some good scholarships for Texans to go to college in Oxford. If you consider the State of Mississippi likely does not have the population of quality high school students and high school graduates needed to fill up their major university it makes sense to recruit from states like Texas to get those students and to build their alumni base.Quote:

My son passed up almost full ride to Arizona to pay out of state tuition to go to A&M's nuclear engineering program. He wanted quality education over quality partying. I always told him he has to follow his passion, which he did, even at a mind numbing price.

It was more like 70. 50 was the height of the hippie era at many campuses. Pants/Jeans rather than shorts, maybe, but no suits or ties.

Hey, after senior final review, then going into my 5th semester I for one wore a maroon blazer to home games in '68. And my date(future wife) wore a skirt and blouse with a maroon and white mum. Everyone except the corps did then. Of course most everyone who flew dressed up too back in the day. I must say I have no issue with the "daisy mae" look in the SEC nowadays.

Fall '79 - Fall '83 the girls that had a football game date with BQ's always wore a dress. Hair & makeup was spot on. The girls that had a date with Corps Turds did the same. I always liked it.
