Barkley does a good job embracing the doofus persona, but he's a smart guy. Totally agree with his take.

He nailed the point I always bring up when these conversations come up in real life. It's only a small percentage that are ever going to make it as pros and have any real cash value on the market.

The vast majority of athletes are lucky to some education and a lot of bills paid for for a few years before life goes on in the real world.

And Barkley is dead right about the the emphasis we place or don't place on the value of education.

The free market won't want their jerseys. Alumni groups will buy them up the way lobbyists buy boring politician books.

I definitely think he's right about the resentment it will create among teammates. Very few people on a given team will be able to cash in significantly on their NIL. It will be a giant mess IMO. People tend to dig their heels in when it comes to NIL, but seem to be afraid to address these issues.

Yeah because everybody at work gets paid the same amount. Why was Jordan selling those shoes didn't it cause resentment among his teammates?

All the top players at college will get paid through NIL just like the top players in the NFL irrespective of position.

Didn't literally all the players March for socialism & put stupid patches on their jerseys to be pro Marxist???

Let em split everything down the middle after government takes 70% the way their ideals stipulate....

Shouldn't get a dollar until they graduate. Treat them like contractors. Scholarship is up-front payment, any residuals are paid upon completion of the contract, which includes playing when healthy, and completing a degree. After 6 years, accounts pay negative interest.

People don't get it. Alum groups will de facto guarantee a baseline of revenue off the NIL. It's a lot cleaner than Walmart gift cards or McDonald's sacks with cash bc its perfectly legal and permissible under ncaa rules.

Now, the heisman candidate will get more than the Special teams player, but everyone on scholarship at helmet programs will get something substantial.

Exactly, legal way to bid on/funnel money to players. They ought to have an auction or something...

I completely agree. You're still going to have a huge disparity in earnings between some players. I believe that they should be able to make money off of their NIL, but I'm simply interested to see how the money will generate problems in the locker room. I wonder if these guys will be allowed to profit off of Youtube and Video Game streaming now.

Alumni and bagmen will buy the big uglys jersey.

He is right about the BS that a free education is nothing.

Make the income equally shared amongst the members of the team. Lets say Johnny sold 6 mil profit to players worth if jerseys while a player that 6 mil get split amongst those on active roster/based on snaps played/some other metric.

So I set up a charity that raises money to buy player jerseys and then gives the jerseys to kids. Basically allows alumni to pay the players salaries with tax deductible contributions, and the kids wear the crap instead of grownups who should be past all that nonsense. Win-win.

Just f-n ban collegiate sports. Let pro leagues set up minor leagues for those that play college now.

Those interested in an education can attend classes at local community college or a 4 year during the off season.

That would do less damage to the college experience. University intramurals will take the place of the stadium.

Sir Charles is right!!

Gonna be some good money laundering opportunities out there, probably even legal ones, for people who know what they're doing.

Players going to the NFL and NBA should get used to top players making more. This also happens in the real world. Top performers typically make the most money. Maybe NIL will be more motivation than just an education for some kids to work harder.

For the record, I don't consider it "just an education" but I know many players do.

The problem is not disparity among teammates, it's disparity among programs. I think in theory players making a buck or two on NIL is fine, but some of you are being naive about how this might play out. Programs with deep packet donors will have a tremendously unfair advantage over poorer programs. The Aggies might be better positioned than most, but it is not good for college football. A more transparent and efficient system is to just pay them all equally.

If anything, it brings the money into the light and gives regulators a fighting chance to regulate.

Ghowe. You make a great point. Programs with deep pocket alumni will do fantastically with this. Y'all think you hate Notre Dame & 'sip now, just wait.

Can you imagine a college football landscape where only a handful of programs with deep pockets have any real chance of contending for a championship? Just imagine how pointless it would all feel if before the season even started you knew that Bama, Clemson, and Ohio State would probably be 3 of the 4 teams in the playoff.

So his premise is that it's not fair that some players image and likeness is more valuable than others? I like Charles a lot, but he has basically been cashing in on his image and likeness his entire professional career. I don't see him setting up a pension fund for utility NBA players not able to collect on their image and likeness.

We, as fans, really need to start a clothing company.

If each person on TexAgs drops in $1K, we could easily start investing in every kid.

We will make jerseys for all of them and immediately "sell" all of them and deliver the profits.

The coaching staff can recruit with real numbers the kids will get.

Point well taken. Let's not make that worse. As a college football fan I for one would like to see a landscape with more competition amongst programs not less.
