I say we give him a stern talking to and a slap on the back. We are SEC & this is a very talented guy. But he does need to chill out with the stupid. If he sucked I'd kick him to the curb, but he does not.

That type of mentality should go over well in our locker room.
Slaps on the wrist are how you win championships. The dude was driving fast, happens to the best of us. Why should he get kicked off the team for that?

Yeah, driving fast. Is that all?

Maybe you missed the part where he was charged with a felony AND ALSO got arrested for weed just 3 weeks earlier.

Morris isn't a victim of circumstance in these situations. He put himself into these positions by poor choices, defiant behavior and complete disregard for team rules and the law.
Don't care. Not worth kicking him off the team for something this minor.

I literally was passed by Morris when this happened. We were headed to Austin on 21 and were pretty much all alone on the road that morning. I looked in my rearview mirror and saw a white Challenger coming up fast, so I moved over to the right lane to let him pass. I was doing about 75MPH, maybe a little faster, but he blew past me like we were parked. Easily doing 100MPH or faster. About literally a minute later, a DPS Explorer passed us with his lights on, and I told my wife that he had no chance to run the Challenger down. We went about another half mile, and saw that officer on the shoulder of the road. Once we passed, the officer made a u-turn and headed back in the opposite direction on 21.

About 5 miles or so up the road, we see a white Sherriff's Tahoe pulled over on one of the county roads that intersect 21 just outside of Bastrop. He didn't have his lights on, but he was pulled up right against the back bumper of the Challenger. My wife and I both had a good laugh at that, and about a mile or so up the road, we saw 2 DPS Explorers with their lights on headed eastbound on 21 rather quickly. I told my wife that they were on the way to take the Challenger driver to jail. And sho nuff.....

Anyways [/csb]....

It could be a completely trumped up set of charges. Kid is in a Dodge Challenger. Suppose he is speeding in it. Passes cop. Cop turns around to pull him over. Kid doesn't see cop immediately, continues speeding. Eventually, cop catches up, kid pulls over. Cop is an ass. Decides that speeding is "reckless driving", and failure to immediately pull over is "Evading Arrest with Vehicle". In reality, only legitimate offense is speeding.

Frankly, I see more of this type of Evading Arrest than I do of the Bonnie and Clyde variety. I wouldn't write the kid off yet.

EDIT: I just saw the post above min. This is exactly what I suspected. Depending upon how chicken**** the DA of Burleson County is, this case may be resolved favorably.

Love how some cops can go after you for doing nothing wrong, and then - for trying to get away from them for doing nothing wrong - they charge you for trying to get away for doing nothing wrong.

An aggie just confirmed that he was going 100mph+. That alone will piss off a cop and send most people to jail. This is not hard.

Decides that speeding is "reckless driving"

It isn't? I don't typically go more than 9 over so speeding isn't something I worry about but I know in some states 20+ is reckless driving.

I blew by a cop at about 120 once. Took him a couple miles to catch me (when he did I was doing 0 since I was turning) . He was displeased. He didn't have his radar on the when I went by though so he just yelled a lot and wrote me a ticket for doing 85 in a 55.

I once took a defensive driving course with a guy that had been convicted of "driving with intent to kill". Seems he was drag racing his hot '68 Camaro over in Bryan hitting a top speed of 125-130 mph. The charge was for driving 100+ over the speed limit. The actual speed limit was 30, but since he went through a school zone 20 mph limit he got the charge even though it was sometime after midnight on a Saturday/Sunday. Judge impounded his ride and mandated that he walk to every DD course offered in BCS for 6 months.

He was pretty indignant because he was "only" going 95 over the limit, but he was still doing 125 on a city street....

My point exactly. "Pissing off a cop" may get you arrested, but it is not a crime. Pissing off a cop often times gets trumped up charges that are later tossed or negotiated downward in court.

To the poster who asked about speeding versus reckless, there is no absolute number that becomes reckless. There are plenty of cops who arbitrarily claim that 100 mph is reckless, but if they cannot justify that it actually placed others in danger, it will not stick. For instance, there are stretches of I-10 that have 80 mph speed limits. Would you call 100 mph on that road reckless? Not many would.

No, you're misunderstanding. Morris got arrested for weed in early December, then was arrested AGAIN three weeks later for felony evading and for reckless driving.

This is a pretty easy call, it's all minor enough that if he is deemed to be a contributing player that we will want and need going forward, you slap him on the wrist, tell him he has 2 strikes, and to get back to work and keep his head down and his nose clean.

If he is NOT a future contributing player that we will need going forward, you tell him that is strike 3 and to enter the transfer portal so we free up a scholly....................

I had something like this happen in college coming back from a guard drill in Waco with an LT as a passenger. I wasn't speeding, but I passed a car and I guess I didn't complete the pass before the broken line went back solid. I drove a car with dark tint and we had the stereo very loud. When I saw the lights I pulled over. Deputy came up with gun drawn on me and said he had been following me for miles with lights on. I had a hard time believing that. After he calmed down I got the citation for the unsafe passing (don't remember exact charge). Probably helped I was in National Guard BDU's.

I think you are right. After seeing this post, I did just a bit of research, and he's got a tough background growing up in Memphis. He's come a long way from according to the article being 'homeless' to driving Dodge Challengers and being an Aggie.

Here's the story: https://www.fox13memphis.com/sports/football-breaks-generational-curses-texas-am-commit-chris-morris/MFN5Z5NBUNELVFFU2C4I7BUNRY/

Let's hope he can turn it around and continue building on this incredible story of breaking generational curses.

FWIW, listening to the police scanner this morning, a Christopher Morris, with a date of birth that matches the one listed on Morris' arrest record, was stopped by CSPD this morning. (In a Hyundai. I'm guessing his Challenger might be impounded.)

Didn't sound like there was an arrest, but that would make three bad encounters with LE, from 3 agencies, in 6 weeks.

And if I was Jimbo, I'd take away his keys, tell the other players not to loan him their cars, and make young Mr. Morris ride a bike everywhere.

A lot of Ags wanting to write this kid off without knowing anything. The article gives zero details.

Reckless driving amd evading arrest? After looking up 545.401 and reading the law, this could have been as simple as changing lanes without using a blinker and then simply not pulling over immediately when the red and blue lit up.

Or it could be that he was running other cars off the road and floored it when the woo-woo went off behind him. We don't know. And until we do, we should reserve judgement.

Maybe. For most of us it's a function of the odds. What are the odds that he was arrested related to "not using his blinker" versus "floored it when the woo-woo went off". One doesn't have to be Mensa to reach a reasonable conclusion about how this went down. AND, it's the 2nd in 60 days? Nice virtue signal though.
