if we do not make CFP and we beat Tennessee as we should

its Orange vs North Carolina or ...Clemson/ND loser if they dont get in the CFP

or Cotton vs Big 12 champ game winner..either Iowa State or Oklahoma

those are literally the only options

Miami is no longer going to the Orange Bowl

The biggest problem with the Cotton Bowl is that, when it isn't a host for the CFP, it has a BDF tie-in.

And then to compound that issue, when OU has undeservedly gotten into the CFP, you end up with an absolute garbage BDF team or some G5 poser. That just does nothing to garner any excitement.

Shows you don't know what you are talking about. A Big 12 team hasn't made the cotton bowl in 5 years.

Doesn't the Orange get the highest ranked team not in the playoffs. Pretty sure that's the tie in

It gets the highest available ACC team vs the highest available out of BIG10/SEC/Notre Dame. The highest non playoff SEC team goes to the sugar bowl when it isn't hosting the playoffs.

I hope we don't go to the Cotton Bowl. I would prefer the Orange bowl against any team not in the Big12.
But if we do play against a Big12 team, OU is the only option that will move the needle at all. tu would move the needle some, but that would not happen, and beating OU is far better.

Honestly, I don't see a bad finish here. Regardless of what occurs, I see us finishing the year no lower than 6. Possibly as high as 3.

Wouldn't mind running the score up on a blue blood like USC or stay close to home in the Cotton and make another statement against OU to establish wins over both of our biggest regional recruiting opponents for the upcoming year.

I can't understand why anyone would want to play in the Cotton Bowl.

Yeah you're right... we're so above that.

I'm not talking about this as the Cotton Bowl being beneath us, I agree that it is still a higher tiered bowl game. But this season, this team, deserves a more prominent spotlight, which as you've said will be the Orange if everything pans out as is. I don't want to play OU or any other Big12 team in Arlington.

Was the last Big 12 in the Cotton Bowl when Baylor snatched defeat from the jaws of victory against Michigan State?

Read the first thing in the post
" if the Ags don't make the College Football Playoff "

Again if we don't make the CFP and take care of business vs Tennessee

It's orange vs UNC or Cotton vs Big 12 Champ

So if ND/Clem loser doesn't make it in who is 4th team to make it in?

It may be a NY6 bowl, but it hasn't been on the Rose/Fiesta/Orange/Sugar tier in terms of prominence in a while... the Peach even more so (we played Duke in the peach in 2013)
Before 2014, the Cotton and Peach Bowls were not considered BCS Bowls, but they are part of the CFP/NY6 Bowl rotation. The Cotton Bowl hosted a semifinal playoff game in 2015 and 2018, and the Peach Bowl hosted a semifinal playoff game in 2016 and 2019.

This x1000.
Cotton Bowl is a big deal, it just feels underwhelming to Texans because we're too close to it and/or we've played in the stadium too many times for other reasons.

Not a big 12. It's fun beating then and all but would rather play another conference in cool bowl trip for the players that we have not been to a while. Orange, Etc

Oh and fans are allowed so not sure which ones are those.

I would really like beating Big 10 schools but they stink this year.

I'd really like to make the playoffs, but if we are in a New Years Six bowl I'd like to play a big name. I know that Cincinnati has had a good season, but history will still show us beating a small school. Same for good teams like North Carolina, Indiana, Northwestern, Iowa State, and Coastal Carolina. I'd love to have a shot at USC, Oklahoma, or Miami. I think we'd do very well in any of those matchups.

Have we ever played in the rose bowl.

Rose Bowl Stadium: yes, 2017
Rose Bowl Game: no
Rose bowl is not an option as they and the Sugar Bowl host the Semi finals. Other years it's the traditional Big 10 vs Pac 12.

I think the conference tie ins to bowls are

Rose Big10 and Pac 12
Sugar SEC and Big 12
Orange ACC vs Big 10/SEC/NC
Peach and Fiesta no tie ins.

Power 5 Champs and the top Group of 5 team get guaranteed bids.

Correct me if I am wrong.

Semi finals are Rose and Sugar this year.
Championship game in Miami. Years after that are Indianapolis, Los Angeles, and Houston.

Nest year's semis are the Cotton and Orange Bowl, the following year is Fiesta and Peach.
