I know he played before a lot of y'all's time, but Mike Jay was a pretty tough guy, too. He took a lot of big hits holding the ball until the last second in the wishbone. And he's a Marine!

I agree, Mike Jay.

Most people rank Bucky over McGee, but don't articulate why. I think Ags remember Bucky more fondly because he had better talent around him and the Ags won the vast majority of his games. I'd rank them as follows:
1. McGee & Bucky (tie)
3. David Walker
4. Mike Jay
5. Manziel (very tough for his size, but he would have had several injuries if he was the QB in the running offenses for which the first four played)
6. Mond

I think with Bucky Part of it was his enjoyment of contact. One of my last memories of him playing were at tailback instead of quarterback. Thats just the type of guy he seemed to be on the field.

Thanks for posting. I was there. Sip fans got up and left after that McGee TD. When football was football not all spread junk.

I'm a Johnny fan, but how does running down a player make him tough?

"Reggie" McNeal?!? Not doubting his character, but he gave up and went down too easy too many times to be included in a toughness debate.

Anyone who puts Manziel over Tannehill obviously has not been alive that long.

Reggie McNeal is the most wasted talent in aggie history. That guy could have been amazing. Don't feel like he was the toughest quarterback but man he could have been great.

Reggie was Johnny before Johnny was Johnny. He ran a crap offense and took a lot of punishment like McGee

I agree he was supertalented, and again, not casting any shadow on his character. However, Johnny escaped so many plays that were seemingly similar to plays where Reggie just seemed to lay down.

"Reggie was Johnny before Johnny was Johnny?!?" WTHF?!? Think Reggie could ever make that play in 2012 at Alabama inside the 20, getting trapped, fumbling/recovering, scrambling left, squaring his shoulders and throwing a strike against his body to Ryan Swope for a TD? Johnny made more electric plays in two years than Reggie did in 3.5+. Again, nothing against Reggie, but the bodies of work don't compare.

In my lifetime that I saw play...Bucky, McGee, and Johnny

Honorable mention: Tannehill, Knight, McCown

My case for each...

Bucky- winner and IMO the quintessential Aggie FB player. He was a hard nosed, gritty RB playing QB

McGee- dude could take a lickin and keep on tickin. He was relentless. The '05 OU and tu games stand out to me. He stepped in as a fish when Reggie tapped out and gave us all hope for the future. The '06 season had a lot of good moments and that team was all blood and guts, led by McGee. I was at the '07 game v Nebraska in Lincoln and watched him get pounded on by their defense and just kept getting up time and time again. Great win that day.

Johnny- most competitive QB to ever wear the maroon and white. He was tough af physically. Different type runner than Bucky or McGee but he carried the load for the team and willed us to victory many times based on physical toughness. His mental toughness alone gets him in the top 3 for me

Sorry but none of those QBs would be sitting upright after the hits Mond has taken.

Manziel

Right three wrong order.

Manziel
Bucky
Magee

Neither Bucky nor Magee ever dealt with SEC level/quality defenses.

He had them listed in the right order.

Ill give you five or six and in no specific order...

Bucky
JFF
Granger
McGee
Mond
Murray (Kevin)
Pavlas
Stump

OK, there are eight. You could put this group on defense and you would have some hitters on the field.

What about Johnny Holland? Recruited as a QB and played LB for three years. The guy played like a Sherman Tank. What a player.

Not really; he was a LB, playing RB who every once in awhile played QB. He didnt take any crap on the field.

Agreed I loved watching Bucky dish it out as well as McGee. Both played tough as nails and took the fight to the defense.
