I am fortunate enough to have witnessed Murray play while attending A&M. But I am curious if any of you remember his playing before he broke his leg?

What was he like?

Thanks,

He was the same - could be a bit of a jerk, but a heck of a QB. Quicker and faster before the break.

Not sure it matches some of the descriptions I've seen here, but bad enough.

Oh Crap, my best friend in high school had that picture in his football locker, it was his reminder to get his ankles wrapped before practice.

I was going to ask if anyone had the image. I was in the stadium that day and remember him going airborne just before coming down it and breaking it. Gruesome injury.

I always felt like we'd win if Murray was in the game. He had great leadership skills.

He was great in college,

I was at the '85 baylro game in waco that we lost,...they converted a 3rd & 23 (or something close to that ), to take the win. Murray played well that day,...wasn't his fault we lost

Funny how the same same guy is viewed in so many ways. I don't doubt all of the praise as listed in all of the previous replies.

I remember Murray as having a huge ego, whiny, me first mentality that caused some football players to not really like him. I certainly don't remember him being on the Bucky Richardson level of finding a way to win and being a great QB.

I do remember that photo........still hurts just thinking about it.

It's quite simple. If you were a huge Aggie fan in the late-1970s, early 1980s, the arrival of KM changed everything at Kyle. John Mazur was Jackie's "coup", a USC transfer. Well, he sucked (not alone), and Jackie went 5-6, 5-5-1, and 6-5 his first three years. After a dying wishbone attack (Emory becomes a memory) and a high-school level HC (Tom Wilson, literally), people were pretty fed up. Even Bum Bright questioned Jackie.

Against that backdrop, Murray took his 35K Brewers' bonus and came to Aggieland.

You can pick the rest up in the history books. Like our record for the next ten years. KM was the catalyst.

Others prefer to dwell on his "personality". If he ain't getting arrested, I don't care. The team followed him, period. Then, there are those who think the Kyler-era changes anything about documented history. Everyone is entitled to their opinion. Mine: JFF came along, causing KM to fall to the 2nd best Aggie QB ever. And, yep, he seems to be a jerk.

Gary Kubiak was the QB in 1982 until injured against SMU (5-6)

John Mazur started the 1983 season but was replaced by Murray halfway through the season (5-5-1)

Kevin Murray was the starter in 1984 until the injury and was replaced by Craig Stump. (6-5)

IMO we would have won 10 games in 1984 if Murray doesn't get hurt. (TT, Baylor, Houston, and SMU from L to W)

Lol, this is so true. It all depends on your experience. Murray began a parade of very good quarterbacks at A&M. Looking back, he wasn't one of the greats. In real time though, after the Tom Wilson era, and then the Mazur fiasco, Murray felt, at the time, like Johnny did many years later. He couldn't hold a candle to Johnny but that's not how he was evaluated. Mazur was such a letdown after Kubiak.
