I had my credit card number stolen recently, and I am pretty certain that it was stolen at the 9/3 A&M football game. I purchased some water at the game with my card, and later that evening there were fraudulent charges.
I use this card very infrequently, so it was pretty easy to pinpoint when the number was stolen. I think I will be paying with cash from now on, but I thought I would warn y'all.

Maybe, but there's ways to steal that information that don't involve you using it or someone being at the physical place you used it. It can take awhile to be used, too.

And nah, it wasn't me that stole it.

Just curious do you have a RFID blocking type wallet?

Not sure what bank issues your card, but most have a lock feature now for when you're not using it. Inconvenient to remember to turn it on when using it, but worth it.

If there was more than one charge, they almost certainly didn't steal it using an RFID reader---and this doesn't really happen in the real world, anyways. Most of those wallets are akin to snake oil.

having spent a considerable amount of time in the payment processing industry I can tell you with a high level of confidence that the majority of stolen card numbers are used well after they are stolen. for the very reason you mentioned, to avoid making it easy to pinpoint the usage.

edit * unless you have fraudulent charges in CS / Bryan the same night. Where is the merchant - online?

vendor had a photographic memory no doubt.

1. Did you report the txns to your issuer.
2. When did they say you would have proceeds replaced/charges reversed?
3. Are they sending you a new credit card? Did you ask if the previous was RFID enabled?
4. Does your issuer waive the consumer responsibility deductible? Most do at this point.

This is most likely to happen if the vendor has a slimmer or the person running cards is out of sight and can take a photo of the front and back to capture the extra security code.

You shouldn't be out money. You might have to wait for the dispute to be resolved but most issuers almost immediately return funds. You should let them know so they can cancel your credit card and issue a new one. You have no interest in what happens next unless law enforcement contacts you (which they likely won't.)

You SHOULD contact vendors you used to apprise them of the situation and ask them if they are aware of other customers being affected. They should answer honestly.

Oh the fun of payments...

I do not have a RFID wallet, but I might consider it now.
After reading the replies, I double checked the dates, and somehow my charge from the Texas State game was not processed until 9/3 (LEVYATTAMU). I just assumed that 9/3 was the game date since that is the date it was processed. Immediately after the LEVYATTAMU charge, I had two fraudulent charges...both online. I cannot be definite that it is tied to my purchase at the game from LEVYATTAMU. I guess it could be a coincidence, but I hardly ever use this card. Then, immediately after the LEVYATTAMU charge, I had two fraudulent charges.

My bank caught the fraudulent charges. The charges have been reversed and they have issued me a new card. I just thought I would warn y'all in case it had happened at the game. Also, I was curious if anyone else had their card info stolen at the game as well.

Thanks for the heads-up. I've had my identity stolen and it's caused some BS! Someone opened a Best Buy account in Michigan and purchased over $2K of goods.

Better check my card to see if anything besides chicken wraps and craft beer in a green can is on there.

Processed on 9/3 is a big problem if you are telling the truth.

the discrepancy in dates can easily be caused by a failure to close a payment batch.

I thought I had a fraudulent charge at an Aggie game once, but it turns out they actually do charge $24 for a chicken wrap.

No you are wrong.

$24 for a chicken wrap is actually a fraudulent charge.

Not really - Thursday night before a holiday weekend. If it didn't get into the Friday batch, then 9/3 was the next business day. But I know what you mean - I hate waiting on charges to post when I know they should've posted already. Concerns me every time.

I too was hit by this best buy fraud

yes and no.

3rd party stand alone atm's are much more likely to be skimmed than in the wall bank owned atm's

at gas pumps an easy trick is to turn Bluetooth on your phone and scan for Bluetooth devices. a lot of criminals are transmitting skimmers instead of physically retrieving data.... if you really want to risk it.

or just don't use a bank debit card. use a credit card to protect yourself from fraudulent charges via the card network.

Yes, bank vestibule ATMs are targets for skimmers. I work on camera software to detect potential thieves installing skimmers.

As has been alluded on this thread - stolen CC info is typically banked for some time before being used. It can be up to several months.

OP, were you in the South Zone first deck concessions? I had the same problem with a brand new card. The concessions and hotel george were the only transactions made. My bank called to ask if I was in ATL shopping at Walmart.

Yes, I was in the South Zone, but I think it was the 2nd deck concessions that I purchased from.
