Not sure that the song segment being discussed is necessarily about hype. Songs like Sweet Home Alabama, Rocky Top,... etc are about participation, singing along and generating more of a feeling of camaraderie. To achieve that they first need to be iconic songs or at least iconic to the people in the stadium and they should speak to place or at least something everyone identifies with. I don't know that we have a song that qualifies. The REK thing was an attempt at that. Personally I can't think of a song and judging by the post here in neither can anyone else.
Seems to me that "The Spirit of Aggieland" and "The Aggie War Hymn" fit that bill pretty good.

But that's neither here nor there....let's get back to 29 year old guys berating others while explaining how things were 40 years ago.
Fine, I should have said 10 years ago. Except it makes no difference.
If it didn't make a difference then we wouldn't be doing it. You're wrong. It's as simple as that. Maybe later this evening I'll get into it when I have more time but right now that's what you're gonna get.

Great argument. I don't have time to make a rebuttal because I'm busy typing this post with no evidence or reasons instead.

And I clearly see it makes a difference, numnuts. I'm saying 40 years ago or 10 years ago makes no difference. Back then we went to go watch the Aggies play football. Or at least I did. Now it's like the only way you people can enjoy a football game is if it's filled with distractions every 5 seconds. You can't just enjoy things for what they are, they have to be dressed up for you. Nevermind what's happening on the field, you're going to go home and talk about how the music selection was wrong, how the hotdogs were too salty, and how the bathroom lines were too long.

What? LOL!

Have enjoyed college football and especially Texas A&M football forever. Never have needed help getting fired up for a game and certainly don't need tp be stimulated every five minutes either. But apparently you do; hope somehow you find something to stimulate you at the game.

Agree w/ much of the above.

Just give REK some time. Pick a different tract if necessary, but give it a little time.

Other than that, just fire up the Fightin' Texas Aggie Band and let them do what they do. It certainly worked for me back in the '60's. '70's and '80's; no reason it shouldn't work now.

Be different, buck the trend. That's what we do. It's why we're special, unlike others.

Where to begin with this gem.

A) If you're gonna insult me, at least spell it right.
B) It very clearly wasn't an argument, it was a place holder, hence my "I'll get into later when I have more free time" comment. I'm not sure how that could have been any more clear.
C) I've been going to college football games since you were still swimming around in your daddy's sack. Spare me the lectures about "how it used to be".
D) If you'd bothered to notice (hell, you even quoted it), I stated that The Spirit and The War Hymn were all that used to be necessary to unite the crowd and fire them up. So again, quit lumping me in with the "you people" in your rant. You don't know a thing about me or what I enjoy about gameday in Aggieland.
E) 40 years ago your rant held water. 10 years ago was much more like today in terms of gameday experience and stadium distractions. Just a terrible comparison.
F) You can whine and cry all you want about the gameday experience YOU expect vs what we have now. You can gritch and moan about how much things have changed. The simple fact of the matter is that it's what the stadium experience has morphed into in our culture. It's about drawing people to game that otherwise wouldn't go. It's about firing up the players and the recruits in the stands. It's about being bigger and better than the schools around us. To put a fine point on it, if we weren't doing it there'd be people here complaining about our stale environment and using it a reason why the best players go to LSU or t.u. or wherever. You know how I know that? Because it happened and I've seen it.

If you want to continue the old man yells at cloud routine and just emotionally yell into the ether, you can do it alone. If you want to have a rational discussion, I'd be more than happy to continue with you.

Ever heard Dixieland Delight played at Alabama game?
Sweet Home Alabama?
John Denver being played at West Virginia game?
Tom Petty at The Swamp?
Sweet Caroline at several?

A sprinkle of non-rock/rap music can be done, and done well. Just needs to be the right song, right timing.

These threads do the best job dating how old some users here are as well as defining the demographics of this site.

Seems like there is a majority of old boomers who are out of touch and haven't the faintest idea of what appeals to a crowd let alone the student body.

stadium atmosphere has sucked since the remodel, pumping in ****ty music and trying to appeal to particular groups has a lot to do with it.

The Road Goes on Forever might be fine as an audience singalong if it werent so long and such a slow build.

Well, at the very least.. a small grass-roots movement is in place.

We CAN do better than what we have presently. This OLDS has given his suggestions.

Again, just give the REK tune some time, see if it catches fire. If not, what the hell. I'd love to hear the Texas Aggie Band play during those pauses in action.

Just don't blow it up after one frickin' shot at it. Give it a fair chance.

And, if it works out, many of you "youngs" who will be "olds' at the blink of an eye, might be singing along.

Give it a fair shot.
